Using my router for . . .

Recommended Posts

It would depend on what router you have -- and for that matter what firmware your running.. I know for sure that a linksys wrt54g running openwrt can run kismet.. so yeah it can be used to look for other wireless networks.

http://www.kismetwireless.net/

Kismet is an 802.11 layer2 wireless network detector, sniffer, and intrusion detection system. Kismet will work with any wireless card which supports raw monitoring (rfmon) mode, and can sniff 802.11b, 802.11a, and 802.11g traffic.

Kismet identifies networks by passively collecting packets and detecting standard named networks, detecting (and given time, decloaking) hidden networks, and infering the presence of nonbeaconing networks via data traffic.

This maybe a stupid question, but how would I go about using Kismet? I have downloaded the source but I dont know how to get it working .

Another option for you is to install the tofu11 or above HyperWRT firmware. It has a site survey built into the firmware, no extra add in required. I've used it before and it works really well, a can see networks on the router that my laptop never new were there.

Does any of that work with my Netgear router?

Sorry, I didnt realize that you weren't running a linksys wrt54g. Dont install that firmware, it will not work with your netgear. I'm not sure but I dont think there is any customized firmware for the netear that will do what your looking for. I may be wrong; so if any one knows otherwise, please post a response.

I still cant get it working.

What can you not get working?? What are you trying to run it on? What OS are you running.. you mention laptop.. if this is a windows laptop.. then just run netstumbler to look for wireless networks..

If your running linux.. what distro.. there are packages for kismet.. all you have to do is install the package.. idiot proof if you will ;)
