this is what you see later:

The light is part of the image is "burned" on our cornea or something. All i did was reverse the image in paint and that's what we get. not so scary anymore tho huh but it's all how we see things and all that. The brain is a weird organ. LOL

Seen this years ago but you coulda been a nice person and not have blown it for anyone else who will view this thread

Don't blame him, because if he didn't ruin it for you then I would have.. Or someone else here would have. It is a tech forum after all, I think many people are interested in how things work.

I love these optical illusion threads at 3 A.M.

lol....what I was trying NOT to do......but still, good stuff! It doesn't matter how old it is, or how technical it is...... it's still cool!

That illusion still amazes me, i wonder how or why it happens.

It's quite simple actually.

Simply put, the neurons in the brain for vision are colour-opponent. This means that they either detect red vs. green, yellow vs. blue, even light vs. dark. It is a constant struggle, a tug-of-war if you will, between the two sides. In this example, there is a tug-of-war between the stimulus received from light and dark parts of the image. The stimulus received from the light parts of the image overpower the dark opponent of that neuron (light is winning the tug-of-war), and the stimulus received from the dark parts of the image overpower the light opponent of that neuron (dark is winning the tug-of-war). Once the stimulus is removed (i.e. you look away), it takes time for the neurons to reset so that neither light nor dark is winning, and to do so, the losing opponent must pull harder. Thus, you see the inverse of the image.

Motion also works like this. Ever stare at a waterfall, and when you look away, it seems everything is moving up? Or, ever stare out of a moving train, and when the train stop, it seems like you are moving backwards?

I hate these things because I end up seeing them for 2-3 minutes after I'm done... I think I saw this almost 10 years ago... LOL.

pretty close as far as the years go.........ballparking it!

    • Nice rant! Expletive after expletive after expletive. Poor petal, I've touched a nerve. Would you like a tissue to wipe those tears away. Btw, nice one calling Neowin trash. Why would you stick around when you disrespect this site and the people behind it? Just go away if you feel that way.
