Newcastle Manager Graeme Souness sacked

Recommended Posts

Newcastle United's manager, Graeme Souness' reign has ended after serving Newcastle from September 2004 till February 2006.

"Souness is the latest in a long line of big names to fall short at Newcastle, following Osvaldo Ardiles, Kevin Keegan, Kenny Dalglish, Ruud Gullit and former England manager Bobby Robson, who was fired in September 2004."

"Hired to bring some discipline to the club, Souness said he was losing patience with his stars. Now Shepherd has lost patience with him and the Magpies are looking for another manager, their 11th in 22 years."

I feel sorry for him. I thought he might have actually been able to revive Newcastle's fortunes.

Is it really Souness' fault that Newcastle is faring so badly in the EPL. 11 coaches in 22 years, that statistic suggests that it might not be the coach but the players that are the problem.

Well it's not like he didn't have money to spend on players. How much did Newcastle actually spend since Souness took over the job? If the players are the problem, the coach is to blame IF he was the one who brought them to the club.

Maybe the chairman has too much influence there. . . . replacing someone like Bobby Robson with Souness was a mistake to begin with in my opinion.

i feel sorry for the fact he couldnt manage to get what could be a half decent team running properly but i would say its a combination of him and the players,

i dont follow football much these days but as a fellow geordie its my duty to answer in this thread :)

Being a Toon supporter through and through, Souness had ?50 million to spend on players, and apart from bringing Michael Owen to the club, he has wasted the financial resources at his disposal. You would expect after spending that amount of cash at the club, they would be in a better position league wise than what they are now.

Geordie fans are very passionate about their football club, and expect to be playing good football at the highest level, they are now in a position 6 points from relegation zone, and its not acceptable for a club of this statue.

It was time for him to go

Yes he did spend ?50 million on new players. Sure it's his job to prepare the team for the matches, to plan their strategy and all, but at the end of the day, it's the players who have to perform and win their matches. Surely the coach can't be blamed for insipid performances by the players.

The fans might expect the team to play quality football, but in reality they don't, not when it matters. That can hardly be blamed on Souness.

Maybe he didn't do enough to inspire the team, but he did bring in Michael Owen, and no one can tag him as a substandard player.

I think Souness bought in some really good players. His worst buy has to be Luque though....

But if you look at all the players he has signed they have all been top class, Owen, Emre, Parker....

I think he was very unlucky to get the chop, I thought that Shepard would of left it to the end of the season before sacking him as Newcastle are not in any real danger of getting relegated. It would of been nice for him to get a fully fit squad playing together as well, Newcastle were actually starting to play well and get some results before Owen got injured, but since then it has all gone to pot.

Most of the players who play for Newcastle can obviously not be bothered in putting the effort in, the team spirit is terrible. Remember Dyer and Bowyer? Bellamy was just as bad as well, at least Souness had the sense to try and sort the team spirit out, but it looks like most of the people dont even want to play for the club. Souness couldnt do any more, and I dont think any other manager will be able to without a complete overhaul of the squad.

This is from a Liverpool fan by the way, and Newcastle have a world class striker in Owen, I wish Liverpool had him :(

Did he bring in Butt and Kluivert aswell? Amazing palyers.

It's just Newcastles defense is one of the worst in the league. It's appauling.

Why they ever got rid of Bobby Robson is beyond me.

I like the toons though so hope the next bloke has more success, not hard!

Well said, Martyn.

The players just don't want to get off their lazy arses and make an effort to play well.

I wish Liverpool had Michael Owen too. I personally think it is where he belongs ;) But anyways, they will probably never get him again and all they have to focus on right now is the Sunday match versus Chelsea, which is going to be a BIG game might I add, and they need to focus on at least getting Runners-Up in the Prem table.

Your probably right, Liverpool is Owen's home. I was dissapointed when a section of Liverpool's fans booed him when we played Newcastle, but that was to be expected as we were all very frustrated that Newcastle beat us towards Owen due to their financial muscle. Owen should be remembered what he did for Liverpool, which was quite simply - scoring goals, something which we are lacking at the moment. I still believe Owen will return to Anfield one day, just like Fowler has :)

Liverpool are playing very well recently, we won quite a few games in a row without conceding a goal. When we lost to Manure that was tottally against the run of play, and all Manure fans deep down know that. Against Birmingham we hit the post a few times, their keeper was out of this world and they scored a freak goal (an own goal I might add). I'm not making excuses, but if Liverpool carry on playing like they have recently and get the luck on the day I can see us beating Chelsea. On their day Chelsea can beat anyone, but on Liverpool's day Liverpool can beat anyone.

Here's to a Liverpool win (Y)

I say they should hve given him to the end of the season, and then another one. At least.

He was re-building the squad, it was a total mess when Robson left, the players did whatever they liked.

He was unlucky with injuries and I think some players he brought in are great, and some aren't. I mean, Parker, Emre, Luque and Owen are all good, they are just all injured. Only Boumsong was a bad buy, and that tells us that the major problem is their defence. Boumsong and Bramble do not belong in the Premiership.

So, buy two new centre-halfs, get the best payers fit, and they are a great side.

Shame on you Newcastle for sacking such a good manager. How do you expect to do well if you don't give the manager tome to settle?

    • Let's goooooooo! I've been loving the entries so far! I still have to finish Rebirth (things have been busy!)! Excited for this next installment.
    • "Revelation?" I was hoping for this episode to be called "Reunion". Oh, well... In a related note, the Final Fantasy VII compilation has received an EC entry, short for Ever Crisis. For those who don't know, it already had AC, BC, CC, and DC entries, short for Advent Children, Before Crisis, Crisis Core, and Dirge of Cerberus. I hope it doesn't get an FC entry becaude that would be a freakin' crisis.
    • Uh, after intense testing now, 'Samsung Browser' is not the best one outside of 'Microsoft Edge' after all. Opera Air is that. It has "some" bloat, but it's far less than what both Microsoft Edge and Brave browser have.
