Ask Us! Syncing With Thunderbird

Jim asked,

I have a Tmo 7100t with OS4 and wanted to know if there is a way to sync that with Desktop Manager 4 and Mozilla Thunderbird. I recently switched from IE to Firefox and would love to move from Outlook to Thunderbird as well. However syncing contacts, calendar and tasks are absolutely necessary.

Jim the quick answer is no, what you can do is export your contacts from Thunderbird to Outlook and sync it that way. You can use Outlook for Calender and Tasks duty in Outlook because Thunderbird doesn?t have any of those options. Yeah it?s a definant major pain in the behind. What RIM does is use a 3rd party company called Intellisync for their Desktop Manager software. My guess is that Intellisync will only support Thunderbird and Apple when RIM decides to pony up the extra dollars. Don?t count on it though, Mac users have been asking for Apple support for the longest time but RIM has never obliged thus forcing Mac users to buy a 3rd party software called PocketMac for an extra $30.

We feel your pain, we use Thunderbird exclusively because of the security issues of Outlook. You should write to RIM, hopefully with enough people complaining they will do something about it.

im using the latest OS (4.1) and latest desktop as well. I'm with Rogers canada but I currently don't have a data plan because I wanna use it as a PDA/Phone for now. I just want to be able to look at docs/pdfs/pics on it and there is no way to transfer to the BB over the data cable, I can only see these files if they're email to me. So i was thinking If i could sync it using the data cable with outlook i guess so that emails will be downloaded onto the blackberry.

I'm in Ireland. I've a 7290 with a data plan and connect the blackberry through an email account. I then attach my other email (yahoo, gmail, hotmail etc) accounts to this account via pop mail, and this account then forwards them to my blackberry. My blackberry does not download email from outlook. It only syncs contacts, tasks, notes and calander. I dont think the blackberry can download email from outlook at least i dont know of any way it could.

Hi, I'm a blackberry enterprise admin, and I have delt with tonnes of blackberry issues, I can answer any questions you have about it.

First off, no you can not sync your emails to your blackberry so you can read them on the road, if you don't have a data plan, sell the blackberry and get a PDA.

The blackberry is really only utilized if you are using it for a lot of data, emails, calendary syncing, address book, etc, and remote admin tools like I use, remote desktop, ssh/telnet, etc.

I would just sell it, or get a small data plan from rogers, but keep in mind, attachments will eat up your data plan fast, and rogers does not have a unlimited data plan, their 'unlimited plan' is really capped at 25MB.

Sell the berry on ebay, and pick up a used PDA to use for keeping your emails, pictures, documents, notes, etc on the road portable for you.

^ awesome reply.

I like the pda functions it has (PIM) and my old phone broke so regardless i need a phone and got a great deal on it. I just wanted to be able to read notes when i take the bus everyday and was trying a work around.

so, for me at least, regardless of email use, i still use the calender (would be lost without it), address book, and general phone function.

1st need is to have an organizer system on my cell phone

2nd need is to read documents. I'm happy with the first one.

I'm thinking of copying and pasting text into a memo in outlook and syncing it. I'll make multiple memos if it's too long.

thx again.
