If you head over to here you’ll find a variety of tools created by Microsoft MVP, Jason Tsang. Each download comprises a couple of Registry files that you can use to update how your keyboard works. The main F Lock Key Eliminator download will enable you to use the [F1] to [F12] keys as standard function keys regardless of whether F Lock is on or off. There are also two additional tools that can permanently switch on the [insert] and [Print Screen] keys which are often affected by the F Lock key. As the site points out, you need to bear in mind that a restart will be required for the changes to take effect, and that your keyboard must be plugged into the PS/2 port on your computer. If you have a USB keyboard, you’ll probably find that you were supplied with a USB-to-PS/2 converter which you can use.

Atm, I have to turn on F-Lock to get F1, F2, F3 etc

I have to turn it off to get PrtScrn.

I'm going to try out the registry tweak thing soon :D

samething over here

is this the file i need?

F Lock Key Eliminator and Permanent PrtScn for the ...

Hi

Just wanted to let you guys know that I've updated my F Lock page so that people who have USB keyboards from Microsoft can also benefit (as opposed to the previous method which relied on using the Scan Code Mapper..

See http://jtsang.mvps.org/flock.html for details.

The old scan code mapper method might not work in Battlefield Earth because it is likely going through DirectInput. I'd be interested to see if this new method (through Intellitype Pro) gets around that. Let me know.. definitely interested feedback.

I guess the xml file doesn't work with DirectInput. Since apps (mostly games) that use DirectInput get scancodes/hid codes directly from the hardware, these tricks to get around F Lock won't work when DirectInput is used.

I guess the easiest thing to do is to make sure F Lock is 'on' so that the function keys are really the 'real' function keys. Annoying, but i guess that's the easiest and simpliest way around it.

I have used that keyboard for 2 years on my workstation ... currently on my media center for quick IE access

have used this solution for ages: http://www.mvps.org/jtsang/flock-e.html It basically switches the funtie of the f-lock key. So you have normal F1 F2 F3... on boot up. If you hit the f-lock key, you'll get Help/docs/ie etc etc.

btw 69th post ^^
