ISO images of Debian Linux

Recommended Posts

Hi. I have been using Ubuntu Linux for quite a long time, and I want to try another distribution of Linux, Debian Linux, which is said to be the most "pure" Linux.

When I visit the official website, there are many *.iso files to be downloaded (I want to download via HTTP or FTP).

Could anyone tell me which files have to be downloaded?

Thanks.

I don't know about it being the most pure Linux, but its the foundation of all the Debian-based distros.

Go here:

http://www.us.debian.org/CD/netinst/

Grab one of the netinst images for the stable release.

If you're feeling more adventurous and want more slightly up to date packages, grab one out of the testing branch:

I am using Pentium III CPU, so I think I will need the i386 version, right?

I want the stable version of Debian, it should be 3.1_r1.

If I don't want to install via network, which files should I download?

There are many files, such as:

File: debian-31r1-i386-binary-1.iso

File: debian-31r1-i386-binary-10.iso

File: debian-31r1-i386-binary-11.iso

File: debian-31r1-i386-binary-12.iso

File: debian-31r1-i386-binary-13.iso

File: debian-31r1-i386-binary-14.iso

File: debian-31r1-i386-binary-2.iso

File: debian-31r1-i386-binary-3.iso

...etc

Do I need to download them if I want offline installation?

That's a HUGE amount of files...

Oh, what can I configure during the network installation?

Just interested in it.

Thanks.

Might have to check into this myself. Downloading now.

thanks

Edit:

Man! Am I seeing correctly. I would need 14 iso files for the full install? Holy sheep s**t!!

Getting the netinst anyway!

:D

14 *.iso files, 6XX MB each, how long does it take to download them and burn them to CDs?

I downloaded the "Network install" version *.iso file, and what I need is to buy some CD-Rs tomorrow...

Move move move! Linux linux linux!

The network install won't don't load the 14 .iso files. It will just download the stuff you need.

The 14 .iso files represents most/all of the apt-get software registry. It would allow you to install every possible thing without needing an internet connection.

If you needed to install 10 servers that had no connection to the internet then you might want to download the full set of disks. Otherwise, it is a waste.

Well, let's assume you have some bizare motherboard that has an unsupported ethernet chipset.

Worst case scenario is that you purchase a $10 ethernet card (RTL8139 or something similar) and ignore the onboard ethernet.

You probably can get the onboard ethernet to work but it would cost me more time than $10.
