Hi-res Crysis DirectX 10 screenshots

Meh. Am I the only one that isn't impressed with the "next gens" graphics? So far from what I've seen of DX10, XB360, and PS3 don't really impress me. They don't seem like THAT much of an improvement. I don't know, I guess I was just expecting more. Probably Nintendo is right and graphics have evolved as far as they can for the time being.

Did you watch the video? It looked amazing to me, personally... biggest leap in graphics technology I've seen in a while.

you're kidding right? you haven't seen a difference?? have you seen call of duty 2 or ghost recon: advanced warfighter on the 360? They look absolutely stunning. Perhaps because they are starting to look more lifelike, you are seeing less and less of the "flash" factor .. but they are definitely improving.

So how will this particular first person shooter revolutionize and jump-start the genre in terms of new and awe-inspiring gameplay, a breathe of fresh air to let out the foul smell of the continually rehashed, dull cookie-cutter fps games continually coming out of the 'EA' mill?

I'm not interested in shelling out $600.00 Canadian to be tricked into believing such a game but instead being offered a chance to view the new 'six million shader model' over last years 'five million shader model'.

Well to me Far Cry was the most underrated FPS in years. I think it was better from a game play POV than either FEAR or HL2 (they had better stories mind you). I duno, there was just some element that it had, the fun factor of sneaking in pretty much open ended environments. Both Fear and HL2 were just a tad linear, certainly good, just a different style of design. Also the open ended nature of Far Cry allows you to play the game at your pace where those other games tend to set the pace for you. We'll see, but if this is anything like Far Cry then I'm sure it will be a stunning game.

Also I doubt it matters that EA is involved. Crytec are developing it not them so hopefully they do the right thing. So far it seems they have the tech right.

BTW is this just a modified Crytek engine as seen in far cry or is it something new? It looks so far and beyond the old engine although something tells me it's more likely to be a heavily modified one as opposed to something completly new.

EA is just the publisher. CryTek is just a small german company here, with the first title being FarCry. EA offered money and they took it. I don't blame them.

I only will blame EA if they publish the game in a too early stage when it is still full of bugs.

I believe to a slight degree that the good graphics will help the genre. New engines offer new possibilities. Take a look at the flora for instance. I'm thinking of Hide & Seek, tracks, sound the leaves make when you move.

The engine in this game is offering a possibility to render a nice outdoor setting instead of the sometimes dull & boring interiors portrayed in eg FEAR.

These pics looks really amazing, There's any card supporting DX10 out there?

nope ther isant untill maby end of the year the nvidia G80 and ATI R600 cards

I wonder if they will release a demo out soon...

it will be poinjtless cause ther be no Dx10 cards out and from what i understand ther be no DX9 mode for thsi game and if ther is ther is no way it look that dang good

Summed it up perfectly, exactly how i wanted to say it.

Sure it can if done right, just in DX9 mode it wouldnt look so nice. Like playing HL2 on DX7 cards. I know HL2 isnt all that nowdays but a few years ago we were drooling over that. Infact it would be suicide for them not to support DX9 unless they plan on delaying the game. With no sign of any DX10 cards until later in the year, if this game is released with the cards then very very few people will be able to ever play it and by the time people have hardware that can play it something better would be out.

Anyway, what reason is there not to offer backwards compatability? Other games and engines have been doing this for 15 years and just limiting the graphics on the older hardware...theres no reason why you couldnt here as far as I know.

Not only that but in games like FarCry the environment is a major factor in the gameplay as you are able to use stealth tactics and use the environment as cover. I know everyone always says gameplay > graphics, which is true but that statement kinda ignores the fact that graphics has a major bearing on the gameplay and potentially break an otherwise good game if done wrong.

Yeah, seen them and played Xbox360. I dunno, I guess I'm just still waiting for the 'Toy Story" graphics that Sony promised with the PS2. And I'm not saying there isn't an improvement, just not what I was expecting. I was expecing to finally have the "Toy Story" graphics, but probably that's still a few gens away.

I'd say we exceeded toy story already. Yeah everything in the films were crisper, but the backgrounds and environments in those movies are so basic compared to some of the complex architecture in games and texturing. The area where toy story may win would be Modelling, but even then I'd say there are games out there that challenge it.

I think that those screenshots look alot nicer than toy story did. Also its a tad hard to compare the 2 when one is a film and the other a 3d environment.

my 2 cents anyway.

When was the last time you saw Toy Story? I saw it about a week ago with my nephew. There is no comparison. Toy Story looks waaaaaay better than what we have now. Even with AA, there are still plenty of jaggies. Toy Story is silky smooth.

I take it someone never played Far Cry. To say it was all graphics is silly if you ask me, but to each his own... I have no reason to see Crysis as anything different.

And how can people always keep blaming EA when they're not always the ones making the game... sometimes it's their in-game studios, sometimes it's not.

the reason why they may not make it backwards compatable is the fact that microsoft is doing it with DX10 breakign away from backwards compatabilty from DX9 and lower to gain more eprformance and alot of otehr things. and really ther is nothing wrong with that at all.

ffs why do these screenshots of upcoming games/tech never use FSAA, and always generally look terrible? Oh well. The video seems to do it justice.

Soft shadowing looks nice. And the forest density is impressive. But nothing much else to say really. In the end, regardless of tech, it all comes down to how good the artists are.

The blur-effect realy makes the forrest look life-like.

actually no, it makes it look like a movie, NOT like YOU are in the jungle, or do you often go around in the real world seeing everythign blurred ? in that case you may need glasses :)

as for wether the engine is completely new, or a rewritten FarCry engine.

Nothing is ever new, even if they started completely from scratch, the programmers would bring in code segments and classes and whatnot from the old engine code. the majority of the engine code is stuff that if they rewrote it would be exactly the same as int he last engine.

How can you be sure? It could be on Vista rendering using the DirectX 10 Reference Rasterizer.

AFAIK, the reference rasterizer would not be able to run DX10 in realtime. These screenshots came from a realtime gameplay video. I also don't see any DX10 effects in these shots, if you do, can you point them out?

Crytek has said that minimum specs will be DX9 and shader model 2.0 and shader model 3.0 being mid-range. That means NV 6x and 7x series cards will be able to run it.

    • Yeah I have a Sound Blaster X3 too (bought myself) and that is set up with the 6-channel cable for true surround. BUT Spotify and TIDAL do not support 5.1 SACD formats so I have to use Acoustic Engine for the fake surround. Apparently Apple Music is the only music streaming service with true Atmos/5.1 support.
    • I was already thinking about trying Fairphone with Murena /e/OS exactly because I don't want any AI on my communication device. For now, I've turned off all AI possible and turned on "Process data only on device" on my Galaxy S24.
    • They should lower the price but make clothing in the shops, like they've had in previous games, actually cost money. (Unless it's required for a mission)
    • FotoSketcher Studio 4.30 by Razvan Serea FotoSketcher Studio is a free creative tool that instantly turns your photos into artwork. With just a few clicks, you can apply styles like pencil sketches, watercolor, oil painting, ink drawings, cartoons, and abstract effects. Powerful yet simple sliders let you adjust every detail to match your vision, from subtle enhancements to bold artistic transformations. You can also improve your images with tools for contrast, sharpness, color, and brightness, plus add frames and text. It supports JPEG, PNG (including transparency), BMP, and WebP formats for both opening and exporting. Available for Windows (64-bit) and macOS (Apple Silicon and Intel), FotoSketcher also offers batch processing, manual retouching, and custom effects for advanced users. Completely free, including commercial use, with no ads or spyware. FotoSketcher Studio 4.30 changelog: New LUTs effect In the Photo Lab category you will find a new LUTs (Lookup Tables) effect for custom colour grading. It comes with 18 presets built right into the application (Cinematic, Kodachrome, Golden hour, Portrait and more), each with a live preview so you can see the look before applying it. Right-click the preview to compare with your original image. And if you have your own .cube files, you can load those from disk too. New "Stylize" category Added a brand-new Stylize category with four new effects. Three of them (Mosaic, Circles and Triangles) are built on the same space-filling idea, turning your photo into tiled mosaics, clusters of circles, or a low-poly triangle look. The fourth, Cartoon, is a bit different: it gives a clean graphic style with defined lines and solid colours. A little tip - set the colour intensity to 0 and Cartoon draws a pure outline drawing with no fill. Combined with the "Do not erase background" option, you can run it on top of any other effect to add crisp contours in two quick steps. Auto-Enhance and Full Reset Two small but handy additions. Auto-Enhance (just press E) tries to optimise your source photo - exposure, white balance, local contrast - for a 'dehazed', natural-looking starting point. And Full Reset clears everything back to a clean slate in one step (working image, history, LUT, script, brushes and sliders) without having to close and reopen the program. Press Ctrl+Shift+N, or right-click the exit button. Scripts The script engine has been updated to support all the new effects, with a few new commands and improved help. If you would like some inspiration, the recent scripting tutorial on this blog walks through several ready-made example scripts. The usual improvements The interface now uses new colour accents for better readability, the history gallery has had a few tweaks, and you can now open .webp images directly. On top of that, this release includes some performance improvements and a good number of bug fixes.
