Linksys WRT54G vs D-Link DI-624

Recommended Posts

I own both of those, (The D-Link was from Verizon) I have to say the WRT54G Is by far the best. Their Configuration web system is much more organized, flows better, and well... looks better. Also the signal is great. much further than the D-Link.... If you happen to come across a WRT54G that has the linux firmware, you can do a lot of cool things with it.

Linksys WRT54G is better. I have the Linksys WRT54GS with the HyperWRT firmware.

Tom's Networking Review - WRT54G

DI-624 This is something that I have experienced before while providing services to a company. The connection was dropping constantly.

Pros

* 108 Mbps performance

* WPA security and WEP encryption support

* Content filtering policies - MAC, IP, URL and domain name

Cons

* Some owners report dropped connections and frequent resets

* Some owners have reported quality of service issues with D-Link tech support

Why not consider the DGL-4300 ???

Totally different interface than other D-link set ups. I just cant say enough good things about this router.

Someone seems to have the same router as I do. It's very stable, I get the best range from this than most other consumer wireless routers. And I have yet to get any disconnects/drops. Full signal anywhere in my house, and outside for a pretty good distance.

I beleive those are designated with an "L" at the end, as such: WRT54GL

If you are getting the WRT54GS router, get yourself the WPC54GS card, not the WPC54G.

If you are in budget, just get the WRT54G and the WPC54G. Getting into the SpeedBooster might add about $40 extra.

All you need to know about linksys is available here : http://www.linksysinfo.org/

Please be reminded that the WRT54GS VER 5 is not working with 3rd party firmware. Most of the newest (in the market) router is v5 already.

I would suggest you to get a WRT54G (without the S) since you will mostly not use the "Speedbooster" function anyway unless you buy all adapters adopting "Speedbooster" from linksys. Or, you can just buy the older version of WRT54G or WRT54GS over ebay. Again....be aware of the hardware version. There are differences between each hardware version. Head over to http://www.linksysinfo.org/modules.php?nam...=showpage&pid=6 and you can deal with a lot of information on the differences.

Anyway, I quote from Linksysinfo.org by TOXIC:

NO 3rd Party Firmware exists for this model. the problem is the amount of RAM and the OS is VxWorks and not Linux.

if you want to use 3rd Party Firmwares, DO NOT BUY A WRT54G v5

To find out which WRT54G you are buying look at the Serial number on the box or the Unit itself.

There are serveral versions of the WRT54G, different powersupplies, chipsets, features, though all based on similar firmware.

To find out which model you have please go by the Serial Number of your WRT54G.

This is the only true way of finding out what one you have.

Known serial numbers (first 4 characters) vs versions / Chipsets:

CDF0 = WRT54G v1.0 / ADM6996L Chipset / 125Mhz CPU

CDF1 = WRT54G v1.0 / ADM6996L Chipset / 125Mhz CPU

CDF2 = WRT54G v1.1 / ADM6996L Chipset / 200Mhz CPU

CDF3 = WRT54G v1.1 / ADM6996L Chipset / 200Mhz CPU

CDF5 = WRT54G v2.0 / ADM6996L Chipset / 200Mhz CPU

CDF7 = WRT54G v2.2 / BCM5325EKQM Chipset / 200Mhz CPU

CDF8 = WRT54G v3.0 / BCM5325EKQM Chipset / 200Mhz CPU

CDF9 = WRT53G v3.1 / BCM5325EKQM Chipset / 200Mhz CPU

CDFA = WRT54G v4.0 / BCM5352E Chipset / 200Mhz CPU

CDFB = WRT54G v5.0 / BCM5352EKPB Chipset < the one to stay away from.

recommendations:

WRT54G v2.0-v4.0

WRT54GS v1.0-v4.0

EZRecovery......you have a picture of a dude with no shirt on......care to tell us anything ?

:D

haha thats funny because i was thinking the same thing :pinch:

anyways, where am I going to find a WRT54GS v1.0-v4.0? when all the new ones are v5.0 :blink:

You will have to inspect each box at the store for the right serial numbers. I tried every where and all i

could find were V-5s. I ended up buying a WRT54GL and flashing it with HYPERWRT, wich will get you

speedbooster. NCIX has them in stock.

WRT54GS

CGN0 = WRT54GS v1.0 / ADM6996L Chipset / CPU 200Mhz

CGN1 = WRT54GS v1.0 / ADM6996L Chipset / CPU 200Mhz

CGN2 = WRT54GS v1.1 / BCM5325EKQM Chipset / CPU 200Mhz

CGN3 = WRT54GS v2.0 / BCM5325EKQM Chipset / CPU 200Mhz

CGN4 = WRT54GS v2.1 / BCM5325EKQM Chipset / CPU 200Mhz

CGN5 = WRT54GS v3.0 / BCM5352E Chipset / CPU 200Mhz

CGN6 = WRT54GS v4.0 / BCM5352E Chipset / CPU 200Mhz

CGN7 = WRT54GS v5.0 / the one to stay away from

WRT54GL

CL7A = WRT54GL / BCM5352E Chipset / CPU 200Mhz

Good luck hunting them down.

Another vote for LinkSys. I was disappointed this month when I bought a D-Link 524 Wireless router, I was moving to wireless due too much wires around my room and I got a new desk so I had to do this. Basically my friend gave me his LinkSys BEFW11S4 which is a 802.11B standard wireless device but the card I have is a G card.

The D-Link was giving me a maxium of "Very Low" in signal strength according to windows and my network card software, but then I hooked up this router my friend gave me (old) from LinkSys and god damn I tell you the signal is now at "Excellent" which is the highest level of strength. Funny thing I put both routers in my room to see if its something in the walls that was making it low but still I was getting "Very Low" I was very disappointed and returned the router the day after and stuck with this for now until I can afford a new Linksys G router.
