i know loads and loads of people have said this before btu wouldn't it be better to make a new thread every 3months? so then the thread doesn't get too long, and your not making a new one too often (monthly)

anyway i can't find my digital camera (oh great. going to egypt soon to) and my workstation is waay to messy atm :p i'll post mine later.

Hello,

Pictures of my recent workshop.

I love rackmounts. So, my PCs are in Rackmount 4U and 2U. I am in progress of finalizing my setup. So, my rack is not complete as of yet. I plan to add disk array in 3U.

This is where I sit and view monitors. One's 17 inch sony lcd. The other is bell 15 inch lcd monitor. The 15 inch one is connected to my 4U which most of time spends its CPU powers for rendering CGs. Since it is a dual cpu system, I play movies almost always while it is rendeirng.

This is overall look.

The 2U's spec is

AMD 64 3200+

2gb ram

XFX geforce 7600gs (recently upgraded from 6200 to play Elder scroll 4)

3 HDD, total of 1tb.

Just to add two more pictures. Sorry for double post.

Since I do not always use a keyboard for the 4U, its keyboard is installed in the rack itself. I barely use the keyboard tough. It's there just in case I need it.

My rackmounts are installed with rails. So, I can pull them out with ease in case I need to open its top.

kakari: wow, very nice man.. well FREAKING SWEET... super jealous

Thanks.

I had ... some fun while building the 2U.

First, 2u PSU I bought over internet wouldn't fit in the case. Well, it did fit, but there was no hole to hold it tight. In the end, I used an ATX PSU with its top off. It was slightly too tall with the top plate. So, I had to take it off.

Second, I used a 1u passive heatsink at first. Then, the system got a thermal shut down after a while. (7 minutes to be exact).

In the end, I placed a low rpm 70mm fan over it. It's been stable ever since.

Do you mind me asking how much $ you've got in this?

I didn't build them all over night. It's been 4 months so far. I originally had the everything in the 2U in a tower case.

So, the total I think, over past 4 months, has been around 2500 CDN dollars. So, around 560 per month. The costy part was building the 4U. Those ECC rams cost me an arm and a leg.

I have an amd opteron 246 I bought over ebay for 70 dollars, brand new oem cpu. It's for my next part of the project, building a custom NAS (disk array) of few TBs.

I normally have a neat workstation but since the Mobo in my main computer went to hell. Things are a little messy. I've been doing a little capturing. Getting all the content off my DVR. It's hard to tell but the two monitors are displaying a HDTV signal via firewire.

My setup is a bit on the temporary side... Sold my 2405FPW, waiting for the 3007WFP amongst other things (storage setup is also temporary, hence the computer guts hanging out). Also, my spare screen has a crappy stand so I made a new one out of Lego :)

That temporary setup is awesome LOL, I love the lego

i would be posting my workstation right now but unfortunately i could not fit my new desk in my car, so its still sitting in the warehouse at ikea. i'm going back with the 4x4 tomorrow! also i have new hardware arriving tomorrow. woo.

nice workstations all around this month especially that rackmount rig. i vaguely remember a previous post about that rackmount project, seems to be coming along spectacularly. could you let us know where you got the cases and the rack?

watch this space for my rig photos. not that they are that special....

    • The problem of course is simply that government does not always know best. My point is that agency is taken away from the EU consumer in these cases. I'm sorry, but I do not believe that governments (politicians) are inherently good, and "looking out for me." Primarily they look to themselves and their own personal desires first, foremost, and always. When the EU or the DOJ fines these companies, claiming to "represent the welfare of the consumer," how much of these billion-dollar judgments are handed to the consumers they claim to represent? Not even a dollar, as I've seen. Yet the EUC lawyers who are paid to sit around and dream up these suits make huge commissions on the fines the EUC adjudicates, which is an ironclad fact I hope everyone is aware of. It's also rank corruption, of course, but that's another topic. Last, when the EU inflicts these judgments, or the DOJ, take your pick, the costs are bundled right along in the cost of the goods and services these companies provide the consumers they are "looking out for." If you are someone who believes his government is his savior then you have my condolences. I think Apple is right here, because the whole scheme of consumer choice is that consumers pick and choose among the products companies offer. Microsoft Windows is more compatible with third party software and hardware than any desktop OS on Earth, which is my sole reason for choosing it. Just because the EUC forces companies do certain things it knows the companies do not want to do, "or else", has no bearing on consumer benefit. This Siri thing is almost idiotic it's so infantile. But this is what the EUC does when the EU in Brussels becomes cash-strapped and needs a big infusion of cash. Some people get upset by "big companies" but it's the opposite when governments dwarf the size and scope of these companies, which is so obvious it hurts.... I mean you can't honestly believe that forcing Apple to do things with Siri it has its own reasons to decline is something that "opens up" Apple, do you? Say it aint' so...
    • Looks like many years since the request was made, a directory tree view finally may be added. https://github.com/files-community/Files/pull/18537
    • There's this from last year https://gist.github.com/threat...364659a8887841aa43deca4efd9 but nothing about a buffer overflow that MS somehow can't code against. No matter what, it makes sense to take a "protected by default" approach.
