Install Vista on a Mactel

I am currently installing Vista on my Mactel... I can confirm the install starts correctly. We shall see how Vista does with detecting the hardware, and we'll see if I can still use my Boot Camp drivers cd to handle the rest...

Vista is a no go. It starts to install, gets to the first reboot and then errors out with:

Boot loader is not correctly installed...

\Windows\System32\winload.exe

Status: 0xc0000225

Oh well. We'll try again when 1) A new public beta is released or 2) When Leopard comes out. :p I'm not in that much of a rush. Windows XP is working great on here.

Wat if...you....installed XP, and then vista afterwards, either as an upgrade or as a seperate, 3rd partition?! just curious.

^^ Tried, that's actually what I did. I installed XP, and then rebooted using Boot Camp and started up the installation. I then deleted the XP partition and installed Vista on it. It went fine until about 1/2 way through the install it reboots. Apparently the bootloader isn't setup yet this early in the install though because that is where the problem is.

Nope. MSDN has 32 bit and 64 bit builds.

Errm. I doubt its that. Linux installs OK. Don't forget that Boot Camp is beta and so is Vista. I'm sure it will work when either or both are at RC stage.

Install XP ,then pop in the Vista disc and chose upgrade.

some guy said he got it to install, but he had to wipe out the OSX partition, he said it's because Vista doesnt like the osx partition (which it shouldnt see anyways....)

It turns out the only way to get Vista on a mac right now is to wipe the OSX partition as well. So it's not a dual boot just yet, I am sure someone will get it working though.

yup thats the one i was talking about (i would have posted a link but i didnt remember where i read it from :p) i wouldnt do it myself....i got a macbook for OSX not windows :p

Read this thread, and you shall also find instructions on how to dual boot with Vista, without supposedly harming neither install!

OK I managed to come to the same basic conclusion as some others that Vista was exploding because it didn't like either the way OSX partitioned the drive or that it wasn't the main partition. I haven't looked deeper into it yet. Anyway I went through the basic steps of installing bootcamp, the firmware, etc and then started the install. When you get to the section where it asks where to actually install vista....well here's the main problem...you delete all of them. Even OSX. Yes this isn't a dual boot solution (yet anyway) but it does allow vista to run.

Things I noticed: The drivers CD that apple has you make doesn't work. It starts installing, gets to about where it starts installing various drivers, installs the video ones, and then goes stupid, rolls back the changes, and says it errored out. I haven't tried to extract the MSI that has the driver packages so that I can manually do it yet. Also I installed the ATI Beta vista drivers and even though they install fine I don't get glass and 3d stuff explodes in my face too. I thought I read somewhere that someone did get glass going but I haven't yet.

Anyway thats it for now. Still doing half a dozen things at once. I'll post more later as I figure things out. Here's some pics.
