Well, there are ways around Starforce, but telling you would be walking that fine line between piracy and legit backups. I suggest googling for more info or just download your game via torrent or something. Sure it piracy, but if you own the game, i don't see the difference between that and backing it up via Alcohol.

kind of off topic, but:

why cant they do some sort of copy protection like XP does - buy licences for each computer rather than per game - after all, i believe under most countries' laws, you are allowed to make a backup copy for personal use. This is okay, but if i phoned the company up and said "my disk is scratched, and because you prevented me from making a backup, so you should send me a new disk free of charge" they would quite frankly tell me to f*** off.

right, now ive got that off my chest :D

EDIT: is neowin having trouble with firefox?? double post, and when edited, turned into a tripple post

I know this might be on the threadline of Neowin's piracy policy, but you can detect a game's protection by using ClonyXXL. The other useful tool, A-Ray Scanner has been recently put offline  . To be honest, it's going to be difficult to copy any game from 2004-now on. New protections on DVD-ROM drives, new DRM software, and fewer DVD-ROM drives bypassing protections are avaliable. The best Plextor has to offer at overcoming copy protections, the Premium PlexWriter, has stopped development.

That's not to say that the back-up community is at an all loss, since there is a vibrant community of those are keen on bypassing CD protections; just PM me if you want to know them. And Alcohol 120% does a wonderful job of doing backups of CD's with older protections.
