Xbox 360 or PS3 (for a PC gamer)

Recommended Posts

You're wrong...PS3 will have the ability to outperform X360, whether or or the s/w written for it will take it to that level is a different question altogether...parallelizing for 9 assymmetrical cores is mighty horrendous.

No software can run better than what they were designed for. XBOX games run beter on X360 bcoz XBOX 360 uses is higher horsepower to do AA which wasn't possible on XBOX.

Wrong again the PS3 processor is only useful for calculations so things like A.I. will perform better while the Xbox 360 is more suited towards graphics processing.

^ I thought it was the other way around?

Anyway - if you use your pc for pc style games (FPS/RPG/RTS)

I'd say get a WII for the whole sitting about playing games with mates thing... I'm probably gonna get one, if anything the 42" T.V. that comes with the house I'm living in next year isn't HD.

neither, or both.

Wait a year, then decide. In my eyes no game is worth $550. I do have a 360 though but PS3 looks to be more promising than the 360. So far the games are mediocre and available on other platforms with just about equal graphics for much less (with the exception of FF and oblivian)

When the PS3 launches the 360 will take a price cut to undermine sony - probably along with more tricks up their sleeves for free online gameplay like sony will be having. For the most part their live service is a sham - $60 a year and still having to pay for arcade games that are just as good as you'd find on a java gamesite don't appeal to me, the 20GB HDD is too small consideirng 7GB of that is cut for game buffer, and not being able to write to USB devices like flashsticks seems like a dumb idea if you ask me. The heat and noise the console creates isn't too fun either - the power brick causing the most problems (whining, noisy, huge, heavy, awkward, problematic)

The 360 has potential, but nothing has been unleashed yet. They are going to make them cheaper (smaller cpu dies) so unless you have got big bucks enjoy your PC until it cant run anything else. The PS3 has a lot of potential, but for the first year of a consoles life nothing extradonary happens - the developers just want to get their R&D costs recouperated by any means possible. Once the system is paid for and more knowledge of development is known expect some great things from both platforms.

For now though, if you REALLY need something a 360 is the only way to go. I suggest saving up for the PS3 - its going to be huge if sony ever gets the kinks worked out.

seems like no one on neowin had an inidividual preference/opinion. instead, we rely on "going with the crowd" these days. do we need to decide whether you should eat vanilla or chocolate ice cream, too?

besides, how will anyone know which console to recommend to you if the ps3 hasn't even been released yet? slow your horses, buddy. wait, play them both, and then make an educated decision of which console you like more. it's sad that people have to actually use 100% of their brain just to know what they like these days.

  • 2 weeks later...

Look, im a huge gamer, and as such i own all the consoles i can afford, with that said im also a huge PC gamer, i play Counter-Strike every friday, and some MMOs...

Id rather play games on my computer than any console if i have the chance, but i gotta be honest the Xbox 360 looks amazing, and some of the demos i have downloaded for it are just mind blowing(Lost Planet for example), as of now im more excited about the 360 than the Ps3

I tend to make lists of the games i might be buying in the future and i already have around 10 games that i want for 360 and only 3 for PS3, i will be buying a PS3 at launch, but if you cant buy both id say you check out the games released and announced for both consoles and look at the genres that you like, you dont need to wait for launch, and remember to buy the console for its games, not its graphics...

This thread is sad. At the end of the day, you should choose the one(s) you think you'll have the best experience with - by playing with them yourself; not going on what other people have to say. If you always go to the flow, there's no originality or uniqueness whatsoever in your actions.

Just remember, XNA = Windows + Xbox 360 development at the same time (meaning more cross-platform games) coming your way. So either one you'll chose you will be able to play most games. Of course, there will be exclusives for each platform. Then don't forget that an Xbox 360 is a one time thing in terms of price, while a PC will need relatively frequent (expensive) upgrades. PS3 is a different story since it's a one time (expensive) thing in terms of price but won't have as many PC games/PC-Xbox360-cross-platform types of games as the PC/Xbox 360 will have.

sorry, but you are wrong.

the PS3 will outperform anything you've ever seen before with the amazing new Cell processor technology, and the best GPU technology from Nvidia that will be able to deliver the amazing Unreal 3 engine at 1080p.

Ken "Kookoo" Katuragi is that you?

Bhahahaha. Someone swallowed Sony's BS hook, line, and sinker.

sorry, but you are wrong.

SOE makes me wonder but i think they will pick it up and go with it.

I personally own a Xbox360 and its a huge waste of money. and i would wait for the PS3 and get it. I have it pre-ordered and i cant freakin wait to break that beast open.

No, they will look better. If you compare the original Xbox games running on the xbox to running on the xbox360. just running it on a better system makes it look better. it may not be overwhelming but i know that in Halo 2 there is a pretty big difference between the two.

Not many, few have. Valve software and Gabe Newell has many horror stories of trying to port his compaie's creations to the xbox/xbox360 platform. It resulted in almost completely re-writing the code for Half-Life 2 to the Xbox platform. Even if your claim is correct with id software, Quake 4 is horrid on the xbox360, and much much better on the PC.

The Xbox 360 really is not the option to go with, having one myself. I would not buy an Xbox 360 the PS3 will be much more worthwile, yes more expensive but a much better system.

CHECK YOUR STATS!!!!!! :( ..... i have seen the specs for both the x-box 360 and the ps3 and if you know anything about computers(yes, a consol is still a computer) you would know what specs are. you just stated what kind of technology ps3 had but you probalbly just heard it off an advertisment. the three most important things when it come to gaming is the RAM the CPU and the vidoe card

1# RAM: It is idnetical in both systems each having twon sticks of 512mb of ram

2#CPU: The xbox 360 has a 7-core CPU and is made by athlon. the ps3 has 1 core and is made by intell.

7 cores highly increases a consules ability. This shines in consulses becuase it allow each core to concentrate on a task. This is amazing for multiplayer gaming because unlike a computer multiplaying is usully done ojn ONE consul. 1 super-core limits the ps3's speed. it is good for quick saves and laods but lacks in the gaming category.

3#Video card: specs not available but i know that xbox 360 has a costum ATI video card and ps3 has a custom Invidia gamecard. ATI video cards have been clearly better than Invidia(they should stick to thier awesome mother boards)

sorry, but rumors are false about the ps3 being better than the x-box 360. Most consul gamers are misinformed. It takes a comp gamer to show them the light lol.

probalbly a shock but x-box 360 IS BETTER THAN THE PS3 performance wise.

2#CPU: The xbox 360 has a 7-core CPU and is made by athlon. the ps3 has 1 core and is made by intell.

7 cores highly increases a consules ability. This shines in consulses becuase it allow each core to concentrate on a task. How can anyone get the stats that wrong?

"consulses" :rofl:

PS3 will almost have identical performance to the 360, although probably far more expensive. Many western developers such as id have started focusing their development on Xbox 360 and from there they port it to PC/PS3... unless Sony will modify the PS3 gamepad they've shown us the 360 controller is far better suited for first person shooters and racing game than any current Sony's offerings. Analog triggers and properly positioned analog joysticks are crucial.

I say if you are fan of western gameplay, as I assume by the titles you mentioned you should go for the Xbox 360, if you are into the japanese games with anime styles and fancy colors go for PS3.

Cross platform games will look identical...

thats true lol,

"PC like games"

PC games as a hold have been alot better then console games.(mostly RPGs)

fallout over FF

sorry, but you are wrong.

the PS3 will outperform anything you've ever seen before with the amazing new Cell processor technology, and the best GPU technology from Nvidia that will be able to deliver the amazing Unreal 3 engine at 1080p.

3#Video card: specs not available but i know that xbox 360 has a costum ATI video card and ps3 has a custom Invidia gamecard. ATI video cards have been clearly better than Invidia(they should stick to thier awesome mother boards)

thats true about the video cards

sorry, but you are wrong.

he is right about more is better then one but its 3 core, homie and the PS3 is process faster but not 3 things at the same time so their will both be fast. and cell is new so you know new technology will have issues but knowone knows what.

Console like game......................................................................PC like game

wii...........PS3........................xbox360........................................PC (ironic)

a table of console like games and PC like games

its simple you might like more console like games because you have an PC or like more PC like game.

but the 360 thing about the games is that. many NEW PC will use directX 10 witch you will need vista to use and not all PC games will be on 360.installing games suck about pc

1# RAM: It is idnetical in both systems each having twon sticks of 512mb of ram

2#CPU: The xbox 360 has a 7-core CPU and is made by athlon. the ps3 has 1 core and is made by intell.

7 cores highly increases a consules ability.

3#Video card: ATI video cards have been clearly better than Invidia.

1# RAM: Its not identical in both first off the Xbox 360 has 512MB GDDR3 @ 700MHz system memory with 10MB Embedded DRAM, and the PS3 has 256MB XDR @ 3.2GHz system memory and 256MB GDDR3 @ 700MHz video memory!

2# CPU: The Xbox 360 has a 3-core CPU and is made by IBM (Power PC). The PS3 has 1 core and 7 spe's made jointly by IBM, Sony and Toshiba (Cell)!

3# Video Card: Why do you say ATI cards are clearly better, are the clearly better just because you say so?

If ATi is so much better than Nvidia(Spell it right people) then why does Nvidia outperform ATi and have the best graphics card out on the market at the current time, and is currently about to release a better more powerful card the 7950GX2 which will have the most memory on a gpu in a long time coming. I'm a Microsoft fanboy but I'm just saying get your facts straight.

I don't know the exact difference between the CPUs of the Xbox 360's 3 cores compare to the PS3's Cell processors, nor do I know the differences between ATI performances in the Xbox 360 versus the nVidia one in the PS3, but all I know is from what I see and played at E3 last week.

I was disappointed with the PS3 overall from the games they showed at this year's E3. I didn't see any gameplay for MGS4 or KillZone, all I saw was another MGS4 trailer. Gran Turismo on the PS3 does look better in HD, but not mind blowing. But thats my view of the PS3, it just a bit better than the PS2, but in HD. I mean, I saw God of War 2 at E3 and it look pretty damn good for a PS2 title, its just not in HD.

Now for the Xbox 360, we already seen some good titles from it over the years and know its powers. Although Gears of war gameplay video look damn impressive, better than any other gameplay videos for the PS3. And the Halo 3 trailer, if thats game play, then its really impressive.

Overall, so far the Xbox 360 looks more impressive.
