OS X and XP Internet Sharing

Recommended Posts

I've tried searching the forums but haven't found anything to give me a definite answer. Hopefully there's a Mac user here somewhere who's done this before I try.

First I'll get the windows side of it out of the way.

I've got 2 XP machines, with 1 sharing my cable modem over the network. Both using static IP addresses as the usual 192.168.0.x.

I've recently become interested in the 17" iMac with the widescreen display. I've heard some good things about it and for what I use the PC for it should make a great replacement, leaving the PC just for games.

Before I buy it though I want to know if anyone knows for sure if it will be able to use my XP machine as the internet gateway.

I've already got a hub and there's enough spare ports for the Mac to plug straight in. Is it going to simply be a case of plugging it in and setting a few IP addresses, or am I going to be starting a war between the 2 systems?

I've heard a bit about Jaguar's ability to work on a windows network, but I honestly don't trust XP's internet sharing to work without some kind of fight ;)

i have my windows machine runnin win xp pro acting as the gateway and os x is able to conect to the inet fine. u dont have to configure any options in the pc besides turning on inet sharing on the Lan Nic and the u set the mac to use DCHP(default) and conect over the lan somewhere in the os x network control panels.
