In XP, I disable simple file sharing so I can have the security tab on all the files and folders. But when I do this, it requires everyone to login in order to access my shared files. I have no idea how, but I was able to fix this before without turning back on simple file sharing.

Any ideas?

I turned off *simple* file sharing. File sharing is still enabled, just it requires them to login with a username and password. I don't want to give them my password of course. I could setup another account for everybody else to logon with, but I don't trust anyone else to login to my PC while I'm not around. Last time I trusted them, I got a trojan on my PC.

The reason I turned off simple file sharing is because it enables this tab:

It also creates a more advanced Sharing tab:

I don't want to lose these things by going back to simple file sharing, so I want to know if anybody has a solution.

I want to disable simple file sharing, but when I do this, the other person has to login in order to gain access to shared files.

On the local network, I can access my files using \\michael

When I type this in though, it asks for a username and password.

If I type in my account ID and password, I can gain access.

When I have simple file sharing enabled, it doesn't ask to login, it just lets them through and shows a list of all the shared folders on my PC. This is the behavior I want, but I want the advanced file sharing features to go with it (those in the screenshots above).

And have you bothered to read how file sharing works?

When SFS is on - users ALWAYS auth as guest.

If you want to limit what account can access what -- create accounts on your machine for them, then assign those accounts the permissions you want to give.

If I log into my machine as budman with a password of neowin

Create an account on your machine budman, and give it a password of neowin.. Then assign this budman account the file permission you want me to have..

When I try to access your machine I will only have access to what you gave your budman account permission to use.

This only works if the accounts have password, no blank is not a password.

if I am logged on to my machine with a different account, that does not match any accounts on your machine - I will get asked for credentials, if I then give budman and neowin, I will have access to what you gave budman permissions too.

Yes I read how it works, and I understand that. I mentioned already though that I've managed to fix this "problem" before. I have no idea how, but I had simple file sharing disabled and everybody else on the network didn't have to login to access my shared files. This was a few months ago when I had to reinstall windows

I was hoping somebody could shed some light on this, knowing how to reproduce what I did. So unless you know how to fix the issue, please don't bump this thread, just let it die.

Control Panel >> Administrative Tools >> Local Security Policy

Local Policies >> Security Options >> Network Access: Sharing and security model for local accounts, "Guest only - local users authenticate as Guest"

Problem solved.

    • I have the money, so I could've done that, but I also just spent nearly $2700 [Canadian] on a laptop, so I wanted to save money.
    • I wonder how would this machine perform with Linux on it, like Ubuntu or Fedora?
