Neowin's Official World Cup 2006 Thread

nobody is as good as the english fans in this department. How many world cups have the country won? Lots of big talk without any real success.

Yes England are a bunch of underachievers so bad press and comments are expected, but we can always sit on top of the fact we invented football and you're speaking English.

Good one :p

Alright guys, time to go watch France :)

I do think you are getting more stick because you are a moderator, but (in my opinion) some of your (and others) posts in this thread should probably be considered flame bait. But I also understand that the thread would be pretty boring if all you had posted was "well dones", and "hard luck to your team".

Football is football. It is the most passionate sport in the world. If you travel to each individual country participating in the world cup you will see this passion displayed for everyone to see.

Love it :D!

Another american who seen to many movies. No america DID not invent football.

Plus so far 3-4 members who are all American have said bad things so i think because they lost there stressed

Sweet Lethal! This is what I love about the game. As much as we hate each other for a couple weeks, we can always share a good laugh and break bread. England's highlight of the tournament would easily be http://www.petercrouchcandoanything.co.uk/

Will France form a victory or another Maginot line?!?!?!?

I am English and on your side. Maybe you should read carefully next time as I stated ENGLAND invented the sport and never mentioned USA.

i'M still pretty miffed at the way everything was stacked against england. You had a ref that was always taking action ONLY WHEN THE PORTUGAL PLAYERS HOUNDED HIM.

The portugal players i thought were dirty as f'. Ronaldo better go to real madrid because i don't think his time at man utd will last this long with the way he played "football" today

The portugal players were always on the floor so as soon as the ball got kicked out they get straight back up again. And also when crouch carried on and then when he lost the ball, Ricardo came and gave him an ear full about not playing it out. Oh how ironic

Right from what i saw today portugal didn't even look a side that liked playing football. You can tell that the attack isn't good they couldn't beat a 10 man england that was sitting deep!

And rooney getting sent off was the worst booking i've seen in my life, he was first fouled by that Carvalho but rooney stood strong. Then he didn't even know where the hell Carvalho was or what he was doing on the floor. He stood on him by accident, sorry things like this happen. If a player got sent of for when someone got hurt in his private area we'd have no players on the pitch.

And then the wistle blew, Carragher took the shot and then ricardo said, I wasn't ready. Tough luck mate the wistle had gone so you better be ready as you have got to defend!!!!!!

I can't see this ref going to the final because his judgement was always strung along by the portugal players and took the bait.

And now i can't wait for sven to get ripped apart for his negative football. Why the f' were we playing a 4 5 1?

hargreaves did good today but wasn't the best for a holding midfield role but he got forward more then gerrad and lampard which is ment to be THERE job.

So then the midfield sit deep and that why we didn't have a change at goal much. We got so many experianced players that should all be able to pump up other players, didn't see much of that.

That to me just shows how negative sven could be and doesn't allow players to do what they do best.

Not much of a football fan to be honest - do keep an eye on it though. I think they played better than they did on some of the games, and Lennon (I think) has been really good - quite mature too.

What was Rooney thinking? People excuse him for being young and having a temper, but come on. I support England and everything, but that was a bit silly. I forget the name of the player that came over and started messing about - the ref was going for a card until all of that happened. PeteWhite just said it (as did the blokes in the flats over the way) it was Ronaldo. The ref definately wasn't going for a card until he came over and pushed him.

Will be supporting Germany against Italy on Tuesday now.

(United Kingdom is England, Wales, Scotland, Northen Ireland. Great Britain is England, Wales, Scotland. England is England. As far as the world cup goes, we're English.)

I hope Ronaldo has got a flame proof jacket for when he gets back to the premiership, he is certainly going to take some sh!t over what he did to Rooney. Let's face it the ref was going to do nothing except give a free kick until Ronaldo opened his big gob. You can see from the TV snippets that it was his intention to get Rooney sent off.

RONALDO, ROT IN HELL YOU CHEATING SCUMBAG.

To lose to a good side is one thing, to lose to a bunch of whinging divers by penalties (when the winning penalty is scored by the worst of the lot) is another.

Pete

PS I think the Portugese diving team should do pretty well at the next olympics!!!

Television pictures appeared to show Ronaldo winking towards the Portugal bench as Rooney made his way off.

Well I said I would post my full opinion on the England v Portugal game a bit later, once there are not thirty posts in this thread a minute?

I thought in the first sixty minutes or so England where poor, but Portugal never showed much quality either. They should have ventured forward somewhat more, as they have a reputation as an attacking team with attacking players.

When Rooney got sent off the game erupted and that was what put me on the edge of my seat for the rest of the game. Rooney was undoubtedly foolish for what he did, but many people don?t understand that he has achieved so much in his football career and he is still only 20! The guy was brought up in Liverpool and used to box as a kid, so he is bound to have a fiery temper. Personally, I think Rooney was frustrated through out the whole game, he did not play well and he knew this. I also think that it should have been a foul against Portugal when three players were trying to win the ball off him. Rooney then appeared to stamp on Carvalho?s nuts (ouch), although I am not sure if that was intentional or not. Cristiano Ronaldo disgraced the world of football, as soon as the Rooney incident occurred Ronaldo rushed up to the ref and told the ref to send Rooney off and because of that Rooney reacted by pushing Ronaldo. So he was sent off, but I still think it should of only have been a caution at most. Did anyone else see Cristiano Ronaldo wink at his team mates just after he had got Rooney sent off? Disgraceful. In some of my earlier posts I said I despise the players who cheat, Ronaldo is a cheat. The Portugal players marred the game by diving and cheating. At least the English players did lower themselves to Ronaldo?s level; it is a shame that foreign players plying their trade in England have brought diving to the Premiership. I am sure that if Ronaldo returns to Manure then Rooney will lamp him one in the face during pre season training.

After Rooney got sent off I must agree that England raised their game, and a lot of passion was displayed by the England players. Once Rooney had got sent off it was a much better game, and I found the tension enjoyable. Credit must be given to the England fan?s at the game who sung their hearts out, as the commentator said on the BBC the fans were our ?12th man?.

Aaron Lennon impressed me when he came on for Beckham; he quite often beat players with his pace and skill, which is something Beckham does not offer us. Hargreaves played very well as well; he must have covered more ground than anyone on that pitch today. England?s defence was brilliant; it was one of the best defensive displays I have seen for a long time.

Some people were saying the referee was biased towards Portugal (as he was Argentine); I think the referee had an excellent game, except for perhaps the Rooney dismissal and his handling of the penalties. Carragher scored a penalty after the referee had blown his whistle, but Ricardo just stood there and said he was not ready, that?s just cheating in my eyes? The referee had some other big decisions to make and he performed brilliantly. In my opinion he should get the final.

Portugal have some good players. But the way they play football just makes me lose so much respect for them. Portugal did not come to play football today, they just came to cheat, no wonder the Portugal v Holland game had so many cars. Portugal won, and they deserve credit for that, but they wont get as much credit as they would have had the played fairly.

England just can?t win on penalties can they? In the last four World Cup?s we have been knocked out three times on penalties. I am pleased Sven is leaving England, he has not really brought as much as I thought he would to England, and I think he should have left after Euro 2004. I hate the way Sven just sits in the dugout all game and show?s no emotion at all, I sometimes think he is wearing glasses with eyes painted on the front and he is actually asleep! Portugal have a brilliant manager in Scolari, you should be proud of that. England?s time will come though!

England played to negatively throughout the whole World Cup for my linking, we should have sticked with 442, even when Owen got injured, 451 is just not the English way and has never worked for us. If England played like they did once Rooney got sent off throughout the whole World Cup, I think we would win it.

Now though, I am going to enjoy the rest of the World Cup an:Dthen focus on Liverpool :D!

Football is football. It is the most passionate sport in the world. If you travel to each individual country participating in the world cup you will see this passion displayed for everyone to see.

Love it :D!

And here's a taste of how the passion in Portugal is displayed :D

I was really disappointed today.... i thought england have the match when portgal... have missed the shooots twice.... but the helll have happpened out there... was really heartbreaking... specially for those cute chicks supporting england over there

I have never seen Brazil play so lost :|

By the way, that hand ball of Ronaldo was a penalty, not a free kick :pinch:

neah it looked more like an accident. who deserves a red card is juan or whoever kicked that french player :(

anywhow i am gla that brasil is playing so bad...french has a chance :D

Can someone tell me why they are all disgusted at Ronaldo's wink? Is it Ronaldo's fault that Rooney grabbed Carvalho's leg and then stomped his nuts in front of the ref?

neah it looked more like an accident. who deserves a red card is juan or whoever kicked that french player :(

It was a yellow. Juan wasn't the last man :p

who deserves a red card is juan or whoever kicked that french player :(

He went down like he'd been shot. He probably hurt himself more by falling like that than by the foul itself.

    • Here's how to watch the Xbox Games Showcase today and what to expect by Pulasthi Ariyasinghe The June games showcase week has been a packed one, with everything from major presentations like Sony and Summer Game Fest to indie-focused reveals coming in almost every day. Now, it's almost time for another big one, with Microsoft bringing its Xbox Games Showcase back later today. This is a double feature too, with a Gears of War E-Day deep dive also being attached to it. For anyone wanting to tune in online, the 2026 Xbox Games Showcase is kicking off at 10 AM PT | 1 PM ET | 6 PM BST | 7 PM CEST later today, June 7. The event will be available to watch on the official Xbox YouTube (4K 60FPS), Twitch, Facebook, Steam, Amazon Live, and other portals. Separate livestreams for American Sign Language and Audio Description will also be available. "This year marks 25 years of XBOX, and this Showcase is poised to be a true celebration, offering world premieres, new gameplay, fresh updates, and more for a swathe of projects we cannot wait to share," said Microsoft about this presentation. With a new CEO behind it that is pulling off some interesting moves, Xbox may have some surprises to reveal today. New looks at first-party games like Halo Campaign Evolved from Halo studios, Fable from Playground Games, InXile Entertainment's Clockwork Revolution, Mojang's Minecraft Dungeons II, and Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4 from Infinity Ward are to be expected here. We may finally get to see the new Blade from Arcane Studios in action and a new Persona game from Atlus at the showcase too. Surprise announcements may also arrive from other Microsoft-owned studios like Bethesda, MachineGames, Ninja Theory, Obsidian, Rare, World's Edge, or Blizzard. Considering how every new release nowadays is staying away from November and December to avoid Grand Theft Auto VI's release, any launch dates Microsoft announces will probably skip those months as well. Once the Xbox Games Showcase ends, Microsoft will immediately kick off the Gears of War: E-Day Direct. This deep dive into the upcoming prequel from The Coalition should attach gameplay footage and perhaps a release window to the highly anticipated project.
    • People in the '50s and '60s had the same attitude, and we're still here over a half century later.
    • So after some fiddling I was able to get it to run at a pretty stable 30FPS. I'm slightly surprised about how much fiddling I had to do to get there though given what I thought was reasonable hardware: Processors: 16 × AMD Ryzen 7 7840HS w/ Radeon 780M Graphics Memory: 16 GiB of RAM Graphics Processor 1: AMD Radeon 780M Graphics Graphics Processor 2: AMD Radeon RX 7700S I think I could do it better if I use Linux rather than Windows, Windows RAM usage is stupid without stripping the system down. But once I got it working in a reasonable state, it was so awesome! I felt like a new Bond! If anyone has any advice to get things going a bit smoother FPS-wise, I'd appreciate it.
