Neowin's Official World Cup 2006 Thread

I'm not Christiano Ronaldo or even privy to his mind, but this is my interpretation of the events...

  • Rooney got tangle up and stood on the groin of Carvalho (accident or not, I don't know)
  • The Referee gave a free kick
  • Ronaldo runs 40 yards to complain about the foul even tho the ref had given a free kick
  • Rooney (the muppet) pushes Ronaldo
  • Ref then pulls Rooney aside and sends him off
  • Ronaldo turns to team mates and winks

It is my opinion that Ronaldo deliberately put himself in that position to get a reaction from Rooney, he did so and contributed to Rooney getting sent off. The wink clearly shows that that was his intention. That is cheating in my book.

You can see from the video clips that the ref wan't going to give more than a free kick until Rooney pushed Ronaldo.

Ronaldo must have excellent eyesight to see that foul from 40 yards away!!!

The quote you gave there, L3thal, is all one-sided. We shall know the truth about their relationship when the new premiership season starts next month.

Pete

I don't believe you are a sore loser, you're just a bit ... frustrated.

Football is not always logical, and the way you see it from your TV is probably not how the referee saw it.

He's just behind Rooney , isn't he ?? He's the judge, not you.

This is all pointless.

Get over with, and beat the portuguese next time !! (Penalty Kicks of course) ;)

The Portugeuse fans can say the English are sore losers all they want, but in the end they've never experienced the feeling of being robbed on penalties time after time. The only real taste of loss the Portugeuse have is being whooped by Greece in Euro 2004 and they have no major achievements to show as a national side either.

Now you're saying you got robbed at the penalty shootout?? How come? You either score or you don't!! How does one get robbed at a penalty shootout???

I thought your beef was with Rooney being sent off!! Yet another illusion?? What gives, man!!??

Robbed because we played better than Portugal and still lost on penalties, and its happened to us plenty of times. Like I said though, to some extent it doesn't matter because we have a World Cup to show for it.

Also if you bothered to read what I put I do think Rooneys sending off was unfair, but I don't think its what caused England to lose, if anything we played better without him. That doesn't make his dismissal fair though or Ronaldos conduct proper either...

I find the arrogance here pathetic though. Rather than be humble in victory and congratulate opponents on a good game its all about rubbing it in the oppositions face, just because they are voicing their upset at losing and some of the decisions in the game.

Robbed because we played better than Portugal and still lost on penalties

I don't get it

You played better than Portugal and you lost in penalties. Who robbed you? Was it the clock for hitting 120 minutes? Was it FIFA's penalty kick rule after 2 OT's? Was it Jesus?

The only real taste of loss the Portugeuse have is being whooped by Greece in Euro 2004 and they have no major achievements to show as a national side either.

Doesn't seem like you follow football too much. If you can recall, in the Euro 2000, we were robbed in OT against France on a made up penalty kick by the ref to give France the win. I think that's a bigger taste of a loss than Greece.

Greece had two shots on goal all game long and scored on one of them. Props to them for defending with 10 players constantly. Just like England when they faced Trinidad and Tobago and it took a Peter Crouch pulling of the defender's hair to score, not to mention a lucky Beckham free kick and an unfortunate shot to the crossbar from Ecuador that gave England the win

P.S. Like i mentioned before, check England's size and check Portugal's size. Portugal, such a small country, is in the semi finals of the World Cup; the smallest country to ever make it to the semi finals in World Cup history. You can only demand much of a country when they have 3/4 less people another country.

Oh, by the way, I am sure you feel proud of that World Cup you have, I mean, afterall, you do recall the ref helped you win the cup, right?

It dosnt matter how good you think they played, because obviously they didnt play good enough. All that matter is what the score is at the end of game.

Their is no denying that, you can bitch and complain about it as much as you want, but thats the way it is. If they played better then they may have have won, but they didnt. So stop making excuses.

This is what the referee said for all those arguing about it...

Referee Horacio Elizondo says he sent Wayne Rooney off against Portugal because of his stamp on Ricardo Carvalho.

The Argentine official was caught in the middle of what turned out to be a pivotal moment of Saturday's World Cup quarter final, as England were eventually knocked out on penalties in Gelsenkirchen.

His decision to show the Manchester United star a red card proved a major influence on England's exit from Germany 2006, with Elizondo insisting his decision to send off Rooney was not influenced by Portugal's ensuing protests.

It leaves Cristiano Ronaldo in the clear after Rooney's Manchester United team-mate was initially accused of trying to persuade the South American to show the England striker a red card.

"It was violent play and therefore he got a red card," Elizondo told The Times.

"People can say what they want, but this had absolutely no influence.

"In general, I don't pay much attention to that sort of thing because I don't care about the pressure on my shoulders during a match.

"For me, it was a clear red card, so I didn't react to the Portuguese players.

"There was pushing and shoving on both sides, but for me it wasn't a reason to caution anybody.

"Sven Goran Eriksson went to the locker-room after the match and congratulated me for an excellent performance and said that I was right to send off Rooney because it was rough play."

Rooney protested his innocence over his actions, but Elizondo's admission is likely to do little to help the former Everton goalscorer's chances of avoiding an international suspension.

The controversy surrounding the sending off of Rooney has not bothered Elizondo, claiming he takes little notice to the attentions of the media.

"I've never thought about it and to be honest, I don't care," he added.

"If people or newspapers would like to create stories like that, it's up to them. I really don't care."

Now I am going to York for five days, so I doubt I will be on Neowin for a bit :p

Bye all

Greece had two shots on goal all game long and scored on one of them. Props to them for defending with 10 players constantly.

Brilliant tactics for them :p Boring, but gets the job done :D Too bad they're suspended :o

Also. Lets nitpick every goal that England has scored... :/

Just like England when they faced Trinidad and Tobago and it took a Peter Crouch pulling of the defender's hair to score, not to mention a lucky Beckham free kick and an unfortunate shot to the crossbar from Ecuador that gave England the win

How does that come into into defending with 10 men? It would almost seem like you hate England. A lot. Also, Ashley Cole brilliantly deflected the shot onto the crossbar.

Never thought I'd say this but COME ON GERMANY.

Right so do you agree with what ronaldo did? (to portuguese supporters)

in any case england did FAR better than portugal in that match, they held up against you with a man down and without their star players all the way through past extra time while you didnt manage to score one? hmm...

there was no better way of loosing, they could have given up towards the end but they kept pushing constantly.

for england they did a fantastic job.

to most of you portugal fans: take your big headdedness and shove it quite frankly.

Its cheating that Rooney pushed Ronaldo?

No, the game had already been stopped and Rooney got no advantage from the push, that is not cheating, just stupidity. The fact is that Ronaldo did not have to get involved, he was 40 yards away from the incident for god's sake. By the time he got to the scene the ref had already stopped the game and awarded the free kick. What was there to protest except the colour of the card? I still believe that it was his intention to get Rooney sent off. Whatever the ref says, I firmly believe he was not going to send Rooney off until he shoved Ronaldo.

I'm actually surprised that Ronaldo didn't fall to the ground clutching his face and crying!

Pete

Right on bro :D  :woot:

Dear god

GET OVER IT EVERYONE!!!!

Cristiano Ronaldo is a cheater BOO HOO, EVERYONE and I mean EVERYONE in football "cheat" in one way or another

you don't call cheating when someone ask for a corner when they were the ones who got it out?

did he run 40 yards or whatever to ask the ref for a card YES, so freacking what?!?!?! when you see a team mate fouled in the floor would'nt you go to protest a card? when they are in the field there is no "oh, he is my friend in <insert team name here>", you are palying for your National Team, not the League Team, besides its a game :sigh: as I said get over it

the sad part about all is that England actually played better when Rooney was sent off

Right so do you agree with what ronaldo did? (to portuguese supporters)

Do YOU agree with what Rooney did (stepping on R. Carvalho's nuts)?

Because if you say yes, then I say yes, I agree with what Ronaldo did. If you say no, well... then, you're agreeing with the referee in sending him off.

And yes, I agree. England played better than Portugal. Especially on the defense. But we scored more penalties than England. And that's what it takes to win.

England really did a great job. I commend the team for that.

It's just that some english fans can't accept defeat, english tabloids included. They make up stories about our players (faking an interview with Pauleta a while back and now this "thing", already dismissed, about Rooney and Ronaldo), and you even make things worse by believing in them.

Why are we still going on and on about England, they choked and shot themselves in the foot and now its over, theres Italy vs. Germany today and I bet its going to be an intense match. Get over Rooney and Christian Ronaldo it was like 3 days ago

It would almost seem like you hate England. A lot.crossbar.

Honestly, I have nothing against England. England would probably be the place I'd like to live outside the US. The reason I am criticizing the English team is because everyone here is criticizing the Portuguese team and calling them cheaters, divers, etc. and making up excuses for the loss. It was a penalty shoot out and that's all about luck. When you start offending Portugal's players because your team lost, then that's when I have to step in as well and criticize England because they didn't do any better than Portugal.

Having said that, I think this discussion should end within the next hour now that the semis are about to start.

Man, I have no idea who will win the Germany - Italy game.

the sad part about all is that England actually played better when Rooney was sent off

Ironic actually ;)

Btw whats everyones predictions for the Germany/Italy game tonight?

2-1 to Germany.

Also with Juve most likely to get relegated to Serie C, I wonder how that would affect the Juve player's performance.

I am not picking sides because I'd like them both to lose, but I cannot make a prediction either way. Italy's defense is pretty much impassable and Germany's defense is not all that great, especially with the suspension of Frings. I believe Italy, as of now, has the slight advantage. If you recall, they beat this same German team 4-1 a month before the world cup in a friendly match.

Italia (Y)

No team has scored on Italy except Italy this World Cup and they've been unbeaten in 23 straight matches. Plus Italy beat 'em in March 4-1. FORZA AZZURI.

But Germany has the hometeam advantage so I see this game being very very good game.

My Prediction: Italy 1-0 though it could go to a shoot out

agree. I bet if england won in the shootout then there wouldnt be such criticism.. I was supporting Brazil but since they are out , I am supporting Portugal cause they never won world cup. And I hate Italy.. :)

Bug Fixes Resolved a condition that could prevent TS Preloader from shutting down safely during rare application crash scenarios. Fixed a text alignment issue in the Network section affecting the display of DNS addresses. Alignment is now rendered correctly. [TS Updater] Fixed an issue that could prevent the updated application's executable "*.exe" file from being located after the update process. [TS Updater] Fixed a bug that could leave outdated "*.sha256" files in the application directory after an update. [TS Updater] Fixed a rare issue that could cause subfolders to be moved into the root directory after an update. [TS Updater] Fixed an issue during the first launch that could cause flickering and a temporary white window appearance due to Windows Defender interactions. Changes A small improvement has been made to the internet connectivity detection algorithm. Connectivity checks are now performed in the background with minimal impact on the user interface thread. The keyboard shortcuts in the top menu have been reorganized and simplified to provide a consistent experience across all Türkaysoft applications and to avoid potential conflicts with standard Windows shortcuts. The TS Preloader splash image has been updated with a Türkiye-themed stadium design to celebrate Türkiye's qualification for the 2026 FIFA World Cup—its first appearance in 24 years. Congratulations, Türkiye! The TS Custom Controls module has been updated to version 26.6, delivering improved stability and a more polished visual appearance. [TS Updater] The application icon has been redesigned to provide a more modern and refined look. Note: Always unzip the program before using it. Otherwise you may get an error. • DWARF mini review: the world's smallest smart telescope for night and day sky captures by Steven Parker DWARFLAB reached out to me asking if I was interested in checking out the DWARF mini, which is a portable astronomy telescope designed for amateur astronomers. Why do I say it's for amateurs? Well, for starters, it's not what you'd call "high end"; it's more of a professional-grade starting point for amateurs serious about capturing what's up there in our night and day skies. A typical amateur astronomer is most likely thousands of dollars deep into the hobby, and I will make no claims that this DWARF mini (at a fraction of the cost) could replace it all, okay? Well, if you read on, it will be clearer what I am trying to convey. Disclosure: DWARFLAB provided a free sample without any editorial input or review pre-approval. I have always been interested in looking up and observing the night sky. I see satellites crossing the sky above my garden most nights, and I am always looking at the moon. Yeah, I have a 200MP camera on my phone, but at 200X zoom, AI takes over and makes the pretty moon pictures that I snap, the DWARF mini does not, you get an actual true picture of what you can barely see with the naked eye. Before we start, let's share the highlights of the DWARF mini in bite-sized format: Pocket-Sized & Ultra-Lightweight Weighing just 1.85 lbs (840g), the DWARF mini easily fits into a backpack or large pocket. Its all-in-one, compact design makes it the ultimate grab-and-go digital telescope for hiking, camping, or traveling to dark-sky locations. Intuitive App Control & Built-in Sky Atlas Go from unboxing to your first shot in just 3 minutes! The DWARFLAB App provides a seamless experience with an interactive star map. Simply select your target and start exploring without the steep learning curve of traditional setups. Auto GOTO & 360° Pivot Freedom Enjoy pinpoint automated tracking with full 360° rotation. Powered by a high-sensitivity Sony IMX662 sensor (1/2.8-inch, 2.9μm pixels), it captures amazing, low-noise astro details, bringing faint nebulas and star clusters to life with stunning clarity. Pro-Level EQ Mode & Long Exposure Unlock advanced deep-space imaging with Equatorial (EQ) Mode. Supporting impressive single-frame exposures up to 90 seconds and featuring built-in light pollution filters, it easily cuts through city glow to reveal intricate celestial structures. Smart Cloud Processing & All-Ages Fun Effortlessly enhance your raw data with integrated cloud processing for professional-grade results. Perfect for beginners, kids, and adults, this telescope makes exploring and sharing the wonders of the universe an exciting, family-friendly adventure. The packaging is a pretty minimal affair with the outer box opening like a flap to reveal the plastic mould of the DWARF mini sitting in it. Below, the Sun filter, charging cable, cleaning cloth, and documentation can be found. DWARFLAB also provided a Mini Hydraulic Tripod ($89.99), and I highly recommend getting it if you plan on purchasing the DWARF mini, as it fully supports the motorized tracking feature of the telescope; plus, at 840g, the weight of the telescope, you will need a tripod that supports more than the weight of a smartphone anyway. What's in the box DWARF Mini Smart Telescope × 1 Sun Filter x 1 Type-C to Type-C Cord x 1 Cleaning Cloth x 1 User Guide With that out of the way, here are the full specs: DWARF mini Dimensions (DWH): 60.70 mm x 100.38 × 183.61 (2.39" x 3.95" x 7.23") Weight: 840g (1.85lbs) Aperture diameter: 30 mm (telephoto), 3.4 mm (wide angle) Image Sensor: SONY IMX662 1/2.8" (Telephoto) OmniVision OS02K10 1/2.8" (Wide-angle) Focal length: 150 mm (telephoto), 6.7 mm (wide-angle) Equivalent focal length: 1016 mm (telephoto), 45 mm (wide-angle) Shutter Speed: Tele - 1/10000-90s, Wide - 1/10000-30s Maximum exposure time: 90s (telephoto & wide-angle), Both in EQ mode Rotation range: Lens: 225°, Base: 360° Effective Pixels: 2.07M Maximum Resolution: 1920 × 1080 (Telephoto & Wide-angle) Built-in filters: Astro, Dark, Duo-Band (Telephoto), Astro (Wide-angle) Output: JPG, FITS, TIFF, MP4 Shooting Mode: Photos, Videos, Astronomy, Burst Shooting, Time-lapse Photography Storage: 64 GB Battery: Built-in 7000 mAh, supports external USB charging Charging Port: Type-C NPU: 1 TOPS Features: WiFi, NFC NFC One-Touch Connection Astronomy Post-Processing/Appointment Shooting/Astronomy Mosaic Wi-Fi Transmission Range: 15m (open environment) Color: Black Compatibility: iOS & Android smartphones/tablets Warranty: 2-years (24-months) MSRP: $399 Design Charge port On/off button Lens On the DWARF mini itself, it is a pretty minimal affair. On one side, there is a Type-C USB port to charge the non-removable 7000 mAh battery, and on the other side, a large button to power on or off the telescope. The button is flanked by an LED that is green when connected via the DWARFLAB app, or lights up red when being powered off. Below the button, there are four LEDs that indicate battery power. The DWARF mini does not have any sharp edges as all sides are rounded off; it has a good heft to it, but the weight of it feels quite balanced in the hand, so it isn't top or bottom-heavy. On the front there is the DWARFLAB logo which is quite small and there are no other markings on it. The tripod offers full 360° rotation of the motorized base, which allows for tracking for the time-lapse mode, but also for the 90-second captures of nearer objects in the sky, such as the Sun or the moon. Usage To get started, simply power on the DWARF mini and open the DWARFLAB app, tap on Connect, and it will scan for the DWARF mini over the Wi-Fi network. The device supports both 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz Wi-Fi, as well as Bluetooth for discovery, so connection issues were minimal in my experience with it. As previously noted in the specs, the DWARF mini will stay connected with a phone or tablet up to 15 meters in an open environment, such as a backyard. Lighting status Powering on: The green circular light will rotate and breathe in turn Powering off: The red circular light is gradually extinguished Connecting: Green light strip rotating Connected: Green light strip solid/always on 4 lights 1= 0-25%, 2= 25-50%, 3= 50-75%, 4= 75-100% battery power To view the full lighting status, such as tracking mode and connection failure, you can check the user guide on the official DWARFLAB page. DWARFLAB app Above, you can see the steps undertaken to connect the DWARFLAB app to my Galaxy S26 Ultra. Weirdly, I got an alert that a firmware update failed to get uploaded to the DWARF mini the first time, but upon retrying, it worked. Then place the DWARF mini outside, make sure your smartphone or tablet is connected to it, and then head back inside, because you can manage it from the comfort of your home. Simply enter the Atlas tab in the app and search for what you want to capture, and then tap on the camera icon; the DWARF mini will then attempt to track the object and give you a live view right on your connected device. Results I've had the DWARF mini since April, but even though my garden is south-facing, I had a lot of trouble trying to capture a good image of the moon. In the end, it was possible after I took it with me on a trip to my parents in Southend, UK, at the end of May. Here is a capture of the moon, resulting from 20 stacked images over a 90-second exposure. What you are seeing here is not AI-assisted. A good example of what I mean is the latest flagships with their 200MP cameras claiming to capture things like closeups of the moon, and while they are not as good as the above example on the DWARF mini, the resulting image on smartphones is actually AI-assisted above 30X zoom. Here is an example of a similar shot at the moon at 200X zoom using an HONOR Magic8 Pro. The difference is clear. Next, here we have a shot of the daytime moon. Here is a shot of Arcturus, the red giant star, which is the fourth brightest in the night sky. As previously mentioned, it could be a bit clearer, but clouds passing in front of it muddied the shot a bit. The Sun The DWARF mini also ships with a sun filter, meaning you can take great shots of the sun as well. Tracking Sun Resulting (stacked) shot Live zoom The pictures themselves are limited to Full HD, and some of the examples actually came out in HD (1280x720), but this is because the standard telescopic result is in 720p while "Wide" is in 1080p. Above you can see how in the app the Sun is tracked, the resulting capture, and Live zoom. I have only scratched the surface of what is possible with this telescope; I found several examples online of shots of the Milky Way, among others, such as nebulae and galaxies. All of this requires patience and knowledge, although if you know what you are looking for, simply enter it in the Atlas tab in the DWARFLAB app, tap the camera icon, and the telescope will attempt to track it. Conclusion The good The DWARF mini definitely places itself in a price point that makes astrology accessible to anyone looking to get started in the hobby. Say you want to have a closer look at the moon, simply enter it in the Atlas, and the Live view also lets you zoom in and snap pictures. The bad Some issues I came across while operating the DWARF mini were that it sometimes failed to connect unless I held my smartphone right next to it, and finding and tracking sometimes took several attempts to get it calibrated. I discovered that it helped if I sort of positioned and pointed the telescope in the general area it was supposed to detect, but this obviously wouldn't work with objects you can't see with the naked eye; more testing is required for that. Another bit of advice is to ensure that the lens is clean. While making the examples of live zooming on the sun, I discovered that the telescope lens and sun filter were not completely clean, and only after cleaning with a microfiber cloth was I able to get a decent shot of the sun. Where to buy and a coupon Okay, $399 is not cheap for a side hobby, but nor is a $1,500 smartphone flagship that you'll most likely have for a couple of years. This is a one-time entrance into astrology, and it won't become obsolete in one year like a smartphone. It's a thumbs up from me. The DWARF mini is available to buy right now in the U.S. and U.K. at the links below.
