use the mount command to mount your windows drives

mount -t vfat /dev/hda8 /mnt/blah where /dev/hda8 is your fat drive and /mnt/blah is a folder.Type man mount for the mount manual page.

edit /etc/fstab to auto mount at statup

thanks prasanth.

one question, how do i install an app? i've got a program on a cd that enables me to get my cable to work. the installation guide was written vaguely so i'm not sure what to do.

Installing

1. Check the Makefile and set the correct locations for the executable, the config file, and the init script. There is no man page...what do you expect for nothing? :)

2. Type make install

3. Edit the /etc/bpalogin.conf file and set any relevant details.

4. Start BPALogin using either the init script, or using /usr/sbin/bpalogin -c /etc/bpalogin.conf

what is Makefile? what are the correct locations? i tried to copy the file to /bin but a msg pop up saying i'm not allowed to copy the file to this location. then i tried another file to /etc, same msg popup, seems like i can't drag and drop the file to the location i want.

and where do i type make install?

I had no sound after installing Red Hat 8 either. I have two sound cards, an on-board thing and a SB Live, and the Red Hat installer had assigned the on-board thing to sound-slot-0 and the SB Live to sound-slot-1. I edited /etc/modules.conf and swapped the designations and it appears to have worked (although I haven't got sound in TuxRacer yet, but I've not had time to investigate that). Oh, I also had to enable sounds in Gnome, and up the volume. I wish Red Hat would go copy Mandrake's sound setup, under Mandrake 9 sound just worked out-of-the-box.

sorry if this is off topic, not trying to be an ass or anything, but i was wondering out of curiousity if you guys have tried mandrake 9 yet. it will auto mount your partitions (even ntfs), and most likely your sound will work out of the box.

lol, the problem is that I didn't make the partition big enough to install the packages completely, that's why I am stuck. I'd install Mandrake but I've had some bad experiences with it.

once again, thanks for all the help MaYed, that'll be the first thing I'll do once I get home. :)

i tried mandrake 9.. i personally think its ugly.. redhat 8 is much more 'prettier'. although mandrake 9 might be better than redhat 8, but i feel better using a prettier os.

Well I have just installed Mandrake Linux 9. It automounts my windows/ntfs partition, but the sound does not work. The soundcore is not present or is not turned on, and I have the drivers for it, but I just can't get them installed.

Same with my modem.

    • take your console only release and shove it. i sold my ps5 as my pc wipes the floor with it, at the point of sale i didn't envisage being ignored by one of the biggest and wealthiest developers ever because they simply can't be bothered to support a loyal user base. as i only played the single player versions, i'll be obtaining this "free" when it eventually reaches PC as an afterthought to pay for their christmas party drinks in 2029. screw me, screw you cockstar
    • Apart from Early Hiccups on Windows 11 on first install on October 6th 2021 on my old Intel 10700 daily use Desktop PC at the time, used to have issue with Bluetooth suddenly no longer working and only fix back then was always another clean install--then would work for a while. Transition to 2024 when i decided to finally upgrade that system for better support for Battlefield 2042 and Battlefield 6 later on, opted for next daily use Gaming Desktop AMD Ryzen 7 7700X and Radeon 7800XT OC 16GB. No major problems at all with this desktop, OS was clean installed way back on 10/8/2025 not long after 25H2 released. Overall i've been happy with Windows 11 Pro from the start, even minor little quirks didn't sway me. Heck i even use Windows 8 and upgraded immediately upon release back then on my old HP P6-2133W Desktop, and while the specs of that machine didn't give me top notch performance--i still was able to do what i wanted to, without too many slowdowns. Windows ME i didn't use on any of my personal systems back in the day, kept those systems on 98SE til XP released, and grabbed that immediately on release date. Kept XP til Vista Released then upgraded immediately, kept Vista til Windows 7 released, then updated immediately again
    • Broadcom: dreadful company who is destroying VMware by pricing it out of the market.
    • To be fair, it wasn't going anywhere. Even when Windows Phone could run Android APKs, Google didn't want any of it so it'd never work and the same thing happened with Windows. It was never about the store or it's users, it was always the developers and who they aligned to.
