First things first, check the mode the drive's running in.

Open Device Manager (right click "My Computer" and click "Manage", it's about half way down on the left hand side of the new window.) and open your IDE controller, double click the channel it's on, look at the "Advanced Settings" tab.

Does it say PIO mode for any drive on that channel?

If so, the drive's dropped out of DMA mode, so all data that comes from the drive has to pretty much go through the process, so it's a lot slower. Best bet us right click and uninstall the channel, reboot the pc let it reinstall it, and check back for the mode.
