I like AC/DC, excellent group, wouldnt refer to them as "metal" tho

I refer to the whole Slip KNot, death Metal brigade.

Great post there buddy..way to go.

Slipknot is NOISE  worst band and is mallcore crap, fake metal.

Death metal is good. But alot wont like it due to the singing. :p

Metal: A Headbanger's Journey - if you watch that you can get a better understanding of metal music. Very good. :D

Rap isn't that bad. I agree, some of it is "funky". I'm not talking about generic rap (hoes, cars, bling bling..) etc. I'm talking about the good stuff. Tupac and Biggie were good rappers back in the day. This is my opinion, but some of the rap out now has bad lyrics and funky beats..

Tell me this (don't flame me over it) you all seem to say the same thing "rap was good in the days" if it was why is it not now? Sounds like dumb down rap is now. MTV stuff.

Money.

Producers.

Back in the day there were people rappin when it wasnt so cool in the main stream, then producers saw a dollar and started makin it more pop to sell to the mainstream America.

If you go to see public enemy, which i have, you will meet people in their mid 30s who also follow grunge etc but appreciate them for their message, granted i will admit the constant "fuK george bush" sentiments gets abit boring.

The reason ive so much respect for tupac shakur is because hes the type of rap artist that needs no beats to make you feel his music, He has a way with putting words together. Actually it was his love of poetry that was his reason for starting to rap, so he could reach a particular audience.

Rap was good back in the day becuase it was real self expression. Rap alone does not rely on generic lyrics. It relies on metaphors and similes.

Rap is not good nowadays because it is easily marketed to target teens; it is not about self expression and art anymore. If you follow the underground area, when one of them goes major you automatically see the sellout. Its hard to rap the way they rap underground and transition it to mainstream because it doesnt sell. No matter how good their flow or lyrics is its not marketable. People just wanna dance to the music, not listen to lyrical content that makes you think.

Tupac lyrics consist of metaphors and similes and passion. I read somewhere that there is a college class that examines tupac poems and lyrics.

Oh and you are right Orange, Dumb Down Raps is here and it has tainted hiphop. True story, BET has a whole list of artist that they ban from playing on there tv station. Most of the list consist of good music that will never be heard. Yet they have stupid Laffy Taffy and all that crunk music. See how the business work? It crazy......

Quoted for truth!

Nobody I have heard has the flow Tupac does. You can hear one of his tunes a mile off, and yes the distinguishable part is his vocals. His voice is nothing special (although nothing bad) but his flow, the way he puts his words together. It just feels right!

It's talking while there's a beat going on. Hardly talent. Simple as that.

That's what's known as "music" on Earth. No matter what it sounds like. Nice try, hun. :)

If the person "talking" was the one that made the actual beat he's rapping to, would that be talented?

If not, then if the lead singer of your favorites band is not playing an instrument, that's not music either.

People plucking metal strings and whacking cylindrical containers whilst sweaty men scream at the top of their lungs so that not even one word can be deciphered is not music. Good, it's decided.

Okay, Rap-Hating-Rockers of the 70's-80's, answer me this, is the only reason you hate rap, or say that it's not music, is because often a majority of the time, string instruments or percussion instruments aren't immediately used in the beat making? Is it because maybe they didn't go to school to learn how to read notes?

Or, are all you hip-hop bashers just unequivocally irate that Rap/Hip-Hop is taking over all types of popular media? Watch any movie, commercial, comedy, you'll see 90% more hip-hop related material than Rock. 'Cause that's what's cool. Don't be depressed because you're getting old. Be happy.

BTW, is this music? http://www.malarkyfilms.com/wilson/h-to-the-izzo.mp3

I got a live version of that, its crazy as hell.

After so many people say its someone talking over a beat.... well yes it is.... BUT rap has to be the most talented form of 'talking over a beat'

Dance (all varieties) - Not much talking at all

Rock - Okay, you have some good verses, but its more about the actual music

Metal - A common practice used by ancient Egyptions to wreck there throats....

Blues/Jazz - Not sure, never really listened.

Rap - More about the talking than the beat. Alot of imagery used in good songs, like a good novel.

You'll never sell a single record. You didn't kill your grandmother or rape your dog. And definetly no "wikka wikka" sound. pffft, amatuer.

wow... and I thought you were open to musical diversity. With a comment like that you must be a really good dj. Your from Toronto right? I mean being a closed shell like that you have to be from there. The afterhour scene is sooo nice and open there

heh... anyway, before I get a warning I'll shut up.

Na i just can't relate to rap at all, soo not brutal and heavy. Just have to see it from everyones point of view. Some like rap, some don't, some like metal, some don't.

And metal singers don't "scream" there's so many genres within metal. MTV stuff is fake.

Death metal - Growl, Grunt and yes it's still singing.

Power metal - Clean singing

Thrash metal - same as above

Now onto genres i hate

Screamo - guy screams like he is a girl

it all depends on what kind of rap u listen to.. if u just listen to what is on the radio or just tv yeah all they talk about is drug, sex and how much money they have most of the time.. but most of the good rap is on mixtapes were artist dont have to be traped into trying to be mainstream/commerical rappers... so i just all depends which one you are hearing..

I got a live version of that, its crazy as hell.

That is the live version. MTV Unplugged. One of my favorite songs. (only the live version)

I just don't understand how people can say Rap is not music. I can't believe that level of ignorance exsists on this forum.

Gangster Rap i really don't like. I've had a gun to my head when being mugged by a gang of ganster rapper wannabes trying to live the glorified lifestyle portreyed in these gangster rap music videos. I am not blaming gangster rap, I'm just stating that that genre seems to promote that kind of lifestyle.

Now as for rap in general, not a huge fan but some of its not bad. Like a bit of the older stuff... like the 80's stuff. It seems more colorful, creative and having a message. As im one more to listen to a song more for the sound then the vocals there are a couple of emenim songs i like (would prefer them without singing) and some Missy Elliot stuff too. I like Dj Jazzy Jeff & The Fresh Prince (aka Will Smith). I also like funny songs, so I like some stuff by Afroman ("Because I got high"), funny and kinda serious at the same time.

As with any genre of anything you will have your good, bad and ugly. Most of the music I listen to is Death Metal. Rarely ever can I understand what in the world they are saying (especially since some are from Finland, Sweden etc...). I've heard some really crappy Death Metal that sounded basically like a car hitting a cat then crashing, but I have heard some really good, melodic stuff. I mainly Like Amorphis, Amon Amarth, Old Man's Child, Vintersorg and Godgory. Many of those don't just use the standard bass, guitar and drums, they use organs, pianos, flutes etc... all the while be heavy music. Some really good tunes in those if you like that sorta thing.

heh. then enlighten us. tell us what rap has in terms of redeeming qualities nowadays. cause like the poster of that quote you quoted, i too cannot see much.

As someone said earlier, you clearly have no idea what rap is then.

I won't bother to argue with any of you about the merits of rap/hip hop music because it's already been proven on several occassions that people at Neowin are incapable of having a discsussion that doesn't result in personal bashing.

I don't care if you don't like rap, good for you. I probably don't necessarily like the so-called "music" you listen to. We're both entitled to our opinions, but don't even try to judge an entire genre of music based solely on the crap you hear on the radio.

That is not rap, that is not hip hop, that is only the commercial BS than any real listener of rap laughs at anyways.

my opinion on hip hop

I think a number of self proclaimed intelligent people are sadly ignorant when they hear a Hip Hop song and instantly write it off as uneducated garbage just because it happens to have slang or words we are unaccustomed to hearing in a typical social setting. Hip Hop, along with several other genre’s of music take this important burden upon there backs to spread through society the things we don’t want to talk about otherwise.

I used to listen to it back in the 80?s and early 90?s when it was still good.

To be honest, I don?t like it anymore. All these wannabe gangstas who hardly can put one letter behind the other and talking about (really hard) violence is just pi..ing me off.

Sorry, there are really only a few left, that are worth to listen to.

my 2 cents

What did you listen to back then? I am just curious as I didn't get into hip hop until the mid-late 90's. I still listen to Nas, Pac, Tribe Called Quest, KRS-One, Roots, De La Soul, etc... all of which I found right around then.

my opinion on hip hop

and same goes with metal. People hear it and think we praye to satan and wanna kill out selfs

I mean i never take the lyrics to heart. I just listen to it :D

I just don't understand how people can say Rap is not music. I can't believe that level of ignorance exsists on this forum.

That's an easy one.

Television.

90% of the people on this forum hate rap because of the impression they get from television.

Such a shame people base 98% of their opinion of a certain music genre from television, or as I like to refer it to, "Garbage Box".

Television.
Agree with that one. People assume that rap is what the see on the same channel as "My Super Sweet 16". Congratulations to the big Scott Storches and Diddys out there for being successful entertainment producers, but like 50 Cent said "I'm not in it for the music, it's a business". It's pop music, really.

There's just too many people putting down rap/hip-hop on this forum :( WTH is all this "you can't have CRAP without RAP" stuff? How about some more stupid sayings like "you can't have MENTAL without METAL" or "You can't have CROCK without ROCK". Please.

I used to put down mainstream hip-hop to stir a discussion about underground and get it recognized, but even that does no good because the uneducated always think that rap is what they see on MTV. Just try to listen to some different flavors for once. If I went my whole life telling myself that Green Day was what all punk music sounded like, then I guess I wouldn't be listening to anymore punk too.

and same goes with metal. People hear it and think we praye to satan and wanna kill out selfs
Yeah that sucks man, that's exactly the same type (not content-wise) of treatment that rap gets. I don't agree with it, and if anything I'd think that those who listen to metal would sympathize with the situation with rap.

    • I can barely recall getting web results from a file search... I must've turned it off long ago. 26H2 is Insider's Preview build 26300.8697, which I am running, atm. It is not available for people running the standard commercial builds of Windows--only for the beta test Insider's group. But anyway, as mentioned in the thread, this feature has been around for a long time...
    • Speak for yourself. I saw it on Feedly, came here to read it, and did read it until the steps to activate. I skipped them to read the last paragraph. I knew it was probably not "the most requested feature", but knowing Neowin, I knew the article was going to talk about a feature nonetheless. I've seen Neowin in its best and worst.
