Security Tab Missing

I have a folder which is shared on our file server.

There are 3 files in this folder. One of the files does not have a security tab on the properties page.

I cannot delete it (Access is denied).

I cannot change the security settings nor take ownership.

The file is a PDF and I only get General and PDF tabs.

1. How can I fix it?

2. How did it happen?

Is the partition formatted with NTFS? This is the first thing to check. If it is, then you probably don't have permission to view permissions.

Yes, the Partition is NTFS.

The other files in the folder have this tab, just not this one.

I am logged in as the Administrator with full control over the system.

All except this file.

If you're Administrator, then that's not the case...

With such an impress list of things to try I was feeling confident that the answer was in there somewhere.

But alas, it wasn't.

"Access Denied" was all I kept getting told.

The server is scheduled for a reboot at the weekend, maybe there is a process that is locking it.

The sysinternals software didn't make it very apparent if the file was locked by something.

ok. As a result of a Windows Update the server was rebooted earlier than I thought.

The offending file has been deleted.

So there must have been a process locking it. Like I said earlier it wasn't obvious from the list that Sysinternals gave which process had locked it.
