metallithrax
Our network has roughly 25 PC's connected. Most are assigned the IP addresses automatically. Recently one of the PC's would not connect. This PC has 2 network cards one for the normal network and one for connection to a machine used in the production of microfilm. The network to the machine is OK, it is the connection to the normal network that doesn't work. The IP address automattically assigned to this PC is:169.254.107.213, subnet mask 255.255.255.0. All the other PC's are 192.168.0.xxx. I have tried to manually change the IP to the same range as the others and still had no luck. The PC is running XP Pro SP1 (haven't been able to upgrade to SP2), because the other network connection is lost when it is upgraded. I am trying to upgrade to SP2 whilst the microfilm machine is inactive so I have a bit of time to sort out the network problem on that side, but cannot because this network problem is stopping me. diggler007
That doesn't sound like you have it set up to obtain an ip from dhcp automatically. that almost sounds like a wins address that computer automatically assigns itself when it can't find a dhcp server. make sure you have obtain ip address from dhcp checked. metallithrax
Thanks, I think we've narrowed it down to a faulty cable somewhere down the line. Although we swapped the two cables that plug into the PC, we didn't think to check the others from the hub to the wall sockets  . atomicski
yea...the 169 addy in XP means it could not find a dhcp server or get an ip from it so it just assigns it that.
