I'm in the UK and I have a 1.3MBits upload / 18 Mbits download :D

Anyway, 448kbps is only good for hosting a small site. Anything such as video or graphics intensive websites will not suffice.

I can't get cable in my area, nor can I get ADSL 2.

I use that same upload speed - And for me simply hosting signature's, then it's fine ;)

Your signature is hosted off of http://tin-ferret.mine.nu/ or in other words.

Name: ACD8A1C3.ipt.aol.com

Address: 172.216.161.195

And its GOD AWFUL SLOW!! Funny how you have a webhosting company off the same IP?

Which by the way is like watching paint dry for the page to come up..

Over 20 seconds for the page to load.. worse than the forums on neowin ;)

BudMan - That page was a template, and was made AGES ago, before I realised that it's too slow for anything to serious.

Going back onto the topic, I still stand by what I said - It is fine for hosting a couple of sigs !

-=EDIT=- And why did you use the IP address to access the page ? What was wrong with the domain ?

Edited by Ferret

Your domain worked to access the page, I was just looking to see where it pointed to, etc..

As to hosting sigs off of limited bandwidth connections - why?? How many people are going to be accessing that sig of yours? This thread alone has 59 views.. 34k * 59 = 2MB

What happens when you get a hot thread with 1000s of views ;) Hope your not wanting to use your pipe when that happens ;) What about when your updating your machine, or working on it, or your line is down? Now nobody can view your sig, an any thread with your posts in it will take longer cuz everyone will have to wait for your timeout, etc..

If you have "content" to serve the public, be it site, your blog, your sig, whatever - put the the content on a server on the public net. Not some home machine with a limited pipe - that is not on 24/7/365

So anytime you want to use your bandwidth, say p2p or something -- the public has to suffer waiting for your "sig" to load ;) Just think of the extra dns traffic you are creating. As everyone has to look up that domain - just to view a sig.. The thing is static, why not just host it on the forum your posting on? In this case neowin?

I do see what your saying - And I do agree.

I really don't get that many hits on it, and if it were to begin to affect my pipe, then I would put it onto a public Server... But for now, my Server at home will suffice.

But don't get me wrong, I appreciate what you are saying :)

And why do you feel you need FULL control of the server, you need/want full control of your site is ALL you really need to provide content to the public..

There are many a host that can provide dedicated servers for your use, and or virtual private servers.. If FULL control of all aspects of the server would be required.. but hosting a news site would most likely not require that. Even so - most likely you could get a 1.5mbps connected vps less then the cost of the bandwidth to your house ;)

Rackforce entry level vps is only $39.95 a month for example 1.5mps connection "unmetered"

Here you go - the entry level one here is only $9.95 a month - http://www.infoquest.com/solutions/web/vpslinux.asp

etc.. etc.. etc.. I am fairly sure that you could find a VPS that would handle your site quite well, give you COMPLETE control over the server -- if you feel you need that for less then the cost of uping your HOME bandwidth, not including the cost of the hardware, the elec to keep it running, etc..

    • Model of the planet?  Last time I checked, Earth was a "Poisonous craphole dumpsterfire" model but I hear it's going to be recalled and scrapped before long...
    • Prices have been unchanged for a looooong time, so really, it's time for a new price bracket, no matter how annoying it is. AAA titles just cost too much to develop these days. Personally, though, I tend to play mostly indie titles that are much lower priced and usually are far better games anyway.
    • Personally I don't usually play most games enough to justify paying £75 / $100 for a single game. I recently got a Switch 2 which came bundled with Mario Kart World, due to some discount codes I worked out I paid approx. £30 for Mario Kart World getting it bundled with the console. If I had paid £75 for Mario Kart World I'll be honest I would have been very disappointed with it. The big open world is essentially empty and lacking any real content, the changes to go GP mode mean you only really do one lap in most races... compared to Mario Kart 8 which has pretty much always been available for around £40 you have to ask why the game is almost double the cost? Look at all the content available in a Forza Horizon game compared to Mario Kart. For £30 I feel the game is ok, its not bad, however its not amazing either.
    • It was just a copy pasta from his other replies...
    • I think that the last game I bought on day-one was something like Ghost of Tsushima. I've come to realise that I don't have enough time (or sometimes inclination) to game as much as I used to, and I've got plenty of games to keep me occupied if I do decide to play. So I don't see the need to buy a game when it first releases - I wait until it goes on sale. If I'm really excited about a game and the price is under £50 then I would consider it, but anything over that price point gets ignored until the price comes down.
