Shift Linux reviewed at Tuxmachines

Recommended Posts

Sheesh - what a jerk.

Clearly did virtually no research on Neowin whatsoever - "It has Win in the name - ergo its a Windows site" - yes, it may be predominantly Windows but it has a very busy Mac and Linux community also!

I still say both thumbs up to the team working on Shift - its hard and (in cases like this) unrewarding but bloody good work guys.. something i'd never have the skills to do.

Ha! I think that he should have waited until we released this to the public.............. he is reviewing an "alpha" edition that is not yet ready for the public.....

I hope that the reviewer will test our public releases to be a bit fairer.......

Thing is with tuxmachines, is normally once they have picked up on a distro they continue its coverage, good or bad, and generally gives fair reviews. Granted, its in alpha, but the review wasn't as negative as it could have been. As the distro gets further along no doubt the reviews will get better. Good thing is tuxmachines ia quite a large site so it will get the name out there.

Oh, and btw, the reviewer is a she ;)

D'oh.... a she........ :pinch:

You are absolutely right, Randomnut. As they say in politics, any press is good press....

I think it was a fair review, minus the fact that "alpha", or even at this point "pre-alpha" wasn't mentioned. Nor was the fact that everything there has been built in a month, which is quite an incredible feat.

I said this before he reviewed it in the other thread about submitting it for review.

I said it wouldn't get a good review at this stage and would only hurt the distro before it's even completed...

Actually, I am not sure anyone here submitted it for review.......

I'm disagreeing with the few people in this thread that said it was an unfair review, or that he woke up on the wrong side of bed.

The great thing about Shift Linux is its potential, and the fact it unifies the community here with something to work on. Right now, he's right: it's nothing to write home about, nothing special. But the potential is there. There's no need to get upset over a very mediocre review when, as yet, it's all it deserves. In time, with the dedication of the community here, I have no doubt that it will turn into something great. Just wait.

    • Salesforce to acquire Fin, formerly Intercom, for over $3 billion by David Uzondu Image via DepositPhotos.com Salesforce today announced that it has reached an agreement with customer support software company Fin to buy the company for around $3.6 billion. Salesforce expects the transaction to close in the fourth quarter of its fiscal year 2027, and the acquisition will not change its financial guidance previously announced on May 27. Marc Benioff, CEO of Salesforce, in its press release, claimed that acquiring the startup gives Salesforce an immediate AI agent that resolves support tickets across email, WhatsApp, SMS, and Slack: You might know Fin by its former name, Intercom. If you have ever been on a website or inside a mobile app and noticed a little chat bubble widget floating in the bottom right corner of your screen, often featuring a friendly face and a message like, "Hi! How can we help you today?" you were almost certainly looking at Intercom. Intercom became Fin just last month, transforming itself into an "AI-first" platform that handles customer issues with little need for humans to intervene. The new name originates from the company's highly successful AI customer service agent, which it launched way back in 2023. This digital assistant supposedly resolves about 76% of customer service volume end-to-end on its own, so the business rebranded to match its primary software tool. Fin's new owners, Salesforce, went on an acquisition spree over the last few years, and some of them you might recognize, like its 2020 $27.7 Billion acquisition of Slack. The last few months saw the enterprise giant buy several startups, including m3ter, Momentum, Cimulate, and Contentful. Salesforce said that when the Fin deal pulls through, customers will "deploy AI agents across" various service operations, which will complement Agentforce, the platform that enables businesses to deploy customizable autonomous digital workers.
