Sony LCD KDL-40V2500 OR Sony KDS50A2000 SXRD ?

Recommended Posts

Here is the deal.... I'm looking for a 1080p TV to watch upscaled DVD (soon HD-DVD) and Digital Cable with HD channels. I also own a Nintendo GameCube (soon Wii).

I don't have a long list of choice :

Sony KDS50A2000 SXRD : 50" Rear Projection Television for 3,299$ CAN on sale now.

OR

Sony KDL-40V2500 LCD : 40" 1080p LCD for 3,999$ CAN on sale in September.

OR

Samsung HLS5687 DLP, 56" Rear projection with a spinning color wheel for 3,299$ CAN on sale now.

My question is simple, what is the best? LCD or Rear Projection (SXRD or DLP?) ?

Right now, after lots of web surfing and searching (almost nothing on all model...), I'm more into the SXRD, lower cost than the LCD and no rainbow effect of the DLP color wheel.

HELP ME!

Well, it's done.

I'm the proud owner of the Sony KDS50A2000 SXRD 50" Rear Projection Television. Going to be shipped to my house on Monday. I also got the Sony DVP-NS75H HDMI DVD player. Two set of Monster HDMI cables (one for the DVD and one for the Digital Cable box).

I got the TV for 3150$ CAN and the DVD player for 149$ CAN.

I'm going to tell you more Monday night, after playing with the TV!!! From what I saw at the store, this TV seem to be the best all around, even compared to LCD TV and Plasma.

The hard part is to wait until Monday...

That's a great TV and a GREAT upconvert DVD player. It lacks some of the features (such as divx) that some of the more Neowin popular brands support, but it's a great home theater DVD player. I'm going to go sulk and be jealous now.

This DVD player can also play JPEG and MP3 (from Data DVD and CD!). That's about it. But the menu is very well done, it's easy to use.

I just CAN'T believe the price of the HDMI cables... at 130$ CAN each, 260$ total only for 2 simple cables....

Everything is in place.... All ready for the big TV Monday!!!! :)

Don't be jealous! It's only a TV!!!

If rainbows don't bother you and you are planning on getting an isf calibration then the 1080p samsung dlps can be made to look better (ie closer to standards) than the sony sxrds. But if rainbows bother you, or if you are only planning on doing a simple calibration with dve or avia then the sxrd will look better.

I saw that Samsung, the 56inch DLP. But the colors of the SXRD where much better. And even if I did not see the rainbows, I don't really like the idea of a 14,000RPM Color Wheel spinning. Another moving part that can break or make noise later on....

I made my homeworks, read allot.... I guess I made the right choice.

Yeah, the samsungs are only better if professional calibrated. So since I don't think you plan on doing that you made the right decision image quality wise :).

It's home... but i'm stuck at work....

Funny thing is, the TV was not in a box? Did the delevery guys removed the box before moving the set inside my house? That's weird, I hope everything is okay. I hate not being at home right now.

When my SXRD was delivered they took it out of the box right after they took it out of the truck.. I asked them if I could have the box though(glad I did because I moved shortly after)...

I'm really not good in writing reviews. I don't know where to start. So here goes with pictures.... Click on the link. Be careful, 1024x768 high quality (500K each).

My almost complete kit

I've never had a TV so good. The colors are vibrant, clear. We see real black and vivid red. It's even more true with good animated movie (like Madagascar). The Movie Network HD is really cool for HD movies and I just can't believe DiscoveryHD. The best part is, even SDTV look good and sharp. A first for almost all HDTV. The SXRD really do a good job.

The setup of the TV is simple, the menu is easy to navigate. And with HDMI, you only need to connect 2 wires (DVD and CableBox) and it's over. This helps to reduce the clutter of wires! I did connect the TV to a UPS, because the fan need to cool the lamp, even if electricity goes missing... Talking about the fan, I can't hear it, whisper quiet.

Even if I don't plan to use them very long, the two 10 watts speakers do the job fine for stereo sound. It's a projection TV, so the viewing angles are not as wide as LCD. It's ideal when you sit just in front of it. The picture darken when you move to the side or look at it while standing.

That's about it.... Please feel free to ask questions.

I'm VERY happy. :D :D

CONGRATS!! Looks gorgeous! :D

I'm planning on buying that same exact set... I hope so anyway! :) About the viewing angle, from what I've seen first-hand in a show room this SXRD set specifically had much better viewing angles than any other rear-projection set that I saw. Of course not as great as an LCD or Plasma, but still very good for a RP... At least I thought so, maybe it's just me?

The viewing angle is good, on each side, but it does get a little bit darker. But standing up, if you're too close to the set, it's all black... This is a TV you will enjoy most if your sitting in front of it.

    • I and many others did not vote to get out of the E.u because of Putin or Farage, we did so for our own reasons. You don't have to tel me what my own did or did not do when it comes to the E.U. The EEC is or was the European Economic Community, a different beast to what the E.U is now.The EEC was a mainly about trading, the E.U have gone far beyond that and as I have said before, is now more of a United States of Europe. The U.K did not vote to join a United States of Europe. Anyway, they did not want us in there in the first place, Charles de Gaulle stopped us joining as he claimed we didn’t agree with the core ideas of integration. He was not wrong and that is why we voted out of the E.U when the time came. I was not old enough to vote the first time. My only regret is that we did not have the referendum years ago and got out years ago. If we rejoined, we would have to agree to join the Euro and no doubt Schengen, agree with freedom of movement, we have enough problem with people coming over here as it is. i have no problem with people coming over here if they work and don't try to push their way of life onto us. The E.U has a currency, freedom of movement, an anthem a flag, a parliament, well they are there, not sure if they do anything. Don't sound like something that is just for trading. Oh yeah, also wanted a euro Army. How many stupid rules have the E.U made that we had to follow? I doubt I will see the Uk rejoin the E.U, which suits me. Oh yeah, my partner is Polish, she came over here before Poland joined the E.U and she got fed up of people just coming over here with ease, while she had to struggle. She is now a British citizen and have been for a fair few years
    • Hello, Paul. Thanks for the editorial. It was interesting. I'm going research more into the app and its concept. Of course, if you know me at all, you know that I'd say your articles needs some editing! I a;ways do, don't I? For instance, the article occasionally mentions a concept before defining it, e.g., relays.
    • Screamer is 50% off on Steam, making it £24.99 here in the UK: https://store.steampowered.com/app/2814990/Screamer/ You might remember the series from the mid 90s / early 2000s, this new game is also by Milestone who created the older games.
    • U.S. partially reverses Anthropic AI ban for Mythos but keeps Fable 5 off the market by Karthik Mudaliar Anthropic says that the U.S. government has finally allowed it to restore Claude Mythos 5. But of course, there's a catch. The rollout is again for a limited set of U.S. organizations that operate and defend critical infrastructure. The company announced this in a post on X (formerly Twitter). This does not mean that Anthropic's latest frontier models are back to normal availability. Fable 5, which was a tuned version of Mythos 5 for public release, remains unavailable. Anthropic said that it is still working with the government to expand Mythos 5 access and make Fable 5 available again, but there's no timeline. Reports from Bloomberg and Reuters say that this decision actually came through a letter from the U.S. Commerce Department. According to Reuters, this would allow more than 100 companies and institutions access to Mythos 5. Reuters also reported that Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick’s letter removes the need for export licenses for approved companies’ non-US citizen employees, as well as Anthropic’s own non-US citizen employees, while restrictions remain for organizations outside the approved list. Anthropic isn't alone with this kind of controlled rollout. OpenAI's newest model family, GPT 5.6, was announced just yesterday, but isn't available for everyone yet. In its announcement, OpenAI also said that access to these models is initially limited to a select group of trusted partners and organizations, with broader access planned later this year. Both of these cases show that frontier AI launches are no longer just ordinary product releases and more like slow and vetted deployments shaped heavily by the U.S. government.
