I think you start by asking this in the Internet, Network, and Security Forum

but first thing you do is disable ssid broadcast, and then encrypt it with WEP or whatever. I'm sure some people will give you better tips. But disabling the broadcast is a good first step

What I was meaning is that instructions for how to secure your wireless network are easy to follow in the user guide. I once did that on the phone with my friend while I was looking at the user guide of his router in a pdf file on the net. That's all, did not want to upset you...

What is the spesific model of your router? And ususally to set up a protected network WPA or WPA2 would be better. First I would fin out if you card supports WPA. If it does go to you router and go to wireless. The should be something there about security. Disable SSID brodcast. The you should have a drop down menu that has security types for mine its Disable WEP WPA WPA2 WPA2-auto. But your might be different. Chose WPA there should be something saying what cyper type you will be using set this to TKIP. Next find the place where it ask you for PSK\EAP. Chose PSK. Down below there should be another line thats ask you for a passphrase. Make that passphrase anywhere from 60 to 62 characters use letters shift +numbers etc. You might need to confirm it so just copy and paste if theres a line lower saying something like confirmed pasphrase. The somehow get your passphrase onto your notebook. Then this depends on you card , it shoudl automatically detect that you protection is WPA and adjust or you might just have to enable the WPA in the setup. once you are done that, try connecting it should ask you for a password or key or something like that. Enter the passphrase that you copied and you should be good to go.

The steps might be a bit different depending on your card and router, but this general overview should work. Hope this helps :)
