Partition Magic troubles

Question

I asked PM to delete few Linux partitions followed by converting them to NTFS and merging them together and then with another NTFS partition that's adjacent to it. The result would be the highlighted one in the screenshot below:

post-38214-1157590805_thumb.jpg

The process didn't go through completely and when I rebooted the PC, the partition's drive letter (S:) didn't appear in windows explorer. In PM, the partition was visible and I made it active followed by assigning it a drive letter. Now I can see the drive in windows explorer, and it has 2 folders (which got created during PM's effort to merge the partitions). But clicking on either of those folders gives me "Access is denied."

Is there anything I can do? There's only one user for this windows xp pro and obviously has the privileges of administrator.

I did windows error checking on this partition (S:) w/ both the options, namely 'Automatically fix file system errors' and 'Scan for and attempt recovery of bad sectors' ticked. And after that, disk management wouldn't open. When I try to start its service, get "error 1055: the service database is locked."

Output of CHKDSK with /f switch:

Help please. I have some data over there that I need to get access to.

RESOLUTION

To resolve this issue, you must turn off Simple File Sharing, and then take ownership of the folder:

1. Turn off Simple File Sharing:

a. Click Start, and then click My Computer.

b. On the Tools menu, click Folder Options, and then click the View tab.

c. Under Advanced Settings, click to clear the Use simple file sharing (Recommended) check box, and then click OK.

2. Right-click the folder that you want to take ownership of, and then click Properties.

3. Click the Security tab, and then click OK on the Security message, if one appears.

4. Click Advanced, and then click the Owner tab.

5. In the Name list, click your user name, Administrator if you are logged in as Administrator, or click the Administrators group.

If you want to take ownership of the contents of that folder, click to select the Replace owner on subcontainers and objects check box.

6. Click OK.

You may receive the following error message, where Folder is the name of the folder that you want to take ownership of:

You do not have permission to read the contents of directory Folder. Do you want to replace the directory permissions with permissions granting you Full Control? All permissions will be replaced if you press Yes.

7. Click Yes.

8. Click OK, and then reapply the permissions and security settings that you want for the folder and the folder contents.

    • Nice rant! Expletive after expletive after expletive. Poor petal, I've touched a nerve. Would you like a tissue to wipe those tears away. Btw, nice one calling Neowin trash. Why would you stick around when you disrespect this site and the people behind it? Just go away if you feel that way.
