Missing .MPG codec?

Question

I recently purchased a new HDD camcorder, which records in .MPG format. I plugged the camcorder into my computer and dragged out the particular .MPG file I wanted to edit.

But I get this error message when I try to import the video into Windows Movie Maker:

  Quote
The file C:\Documents and Settings\-\Desktop\M2U00011.MPG cannot be imported because the codec required to play the file is not installed on your computer. If you have already tried to download and install the codec, close and restart Windows Movie Maker, and then try to import the file again.

I've tried converting the .MPG to .AVI using SUPER, but WMM won't open the new .AVI conversion either. This isn't the first time I had a problem with a video clip, but the first time I tried to "install" a codec, I must've downloaded the wrong one because nothing changed. So someone please tell me which proper .MPG codec I need.

I already have XviD installed, my WMM settings were already set to download codecs automatically, and Gspot tells me I already have the approrpriate MPEG codecs installed.

I tried VDubMod, but I just messed around with the settings, because I'm not too sure about how to save it as a proper .AVI, so that kind of failed. DVD2AVI was recommended on some other Web site, but that was to no avail. I even googled "windows movie maker won't import mpeg" and it seems it's not an uncommon problem. :(

This looks to be the most comprehensive MovieMaker site, with a section on "Importing Movie Source Files"

Other things that may be of use

MPEG Streamclip http://www.squared5.com/
