CPU constantly at 100%

Recommended Posts

Hey guys,

Sorry if this is in the wrong forum by the way. Just wandering if there is something wrong with my system. I currently have a 2.8ghz Intel Celeron processor with 708mb RAM plus 64mb onboard graphics.

However my CPU is constantly at or near 100%. All I have running at the moment is Windows Live Messenger and Internet Explorer 7 Beta. My computer also runs slow when switchin browser tabs and conversations, etc.

Here are the processes I have running and their approximate memory usage:

iexplore.exe 69mb

msnmsgr.exe 55mb

svchost.exe 24mb

explorer.exe 20mb

vsmon.exe 20mb

CLIPBO_1.EXE 10mb

avgcc.exe 10mb

ashServ.exe 9mb

avgemc.exe 7mb

Wlan.exe 7mb

avgasmvr.exe 6mb

svchost.exe 5mb

zlclient.exe 5mb

spoolsv.exe 5mb

svchost.exe 5mb

svchost.exe 5mb

svchost.exe 5mb

services.exe 4mb

ctfmon.exe 4mb

csrss.exe 4mb

svchost.exe 4mb

alg.exe 4mb

sdhelp.exe 3mb

svchost.exe 4mb

vsnpstd.exe 3mb

qttask.exe 3mb

avgupsvc.exe 3mb

taskmgr.exe 3mb

ashWebSv.exe 2mb

lsass.exe 2mb

winlogon.exe 2mb

ashDisp.exe 2mb

aswUpdSv.exe 1mb

ashMaiSv.exe 1mb

smss.exe 0.5mb

System 0.2mb

System Idle Process 0.01mb

Sorry I know that was a long list. Is there anything wrong or is it just my computer spec?

Thanks

Rob

dont worry about the 'system idle process, its just how 'free' your cpu is. so if its at 100% that means cpu isnt doing anything.

But ive noticed for 'system' it is quite high at 23%. maybe you can recheck it without any other software running. sometimes this is a driver/irq problem.

i would say that's your problem.

20% cpu usage is a lot for a browser if idle and even then, doing things like streaming videos or waiting for pictures to download shouldn't require the cpu spike to be there for long.

is your windows install fully updated?

scanned for viruses and spyware?

any sort of 3rd party extensions that need to be disabled with IE7?

Hi all:

I have the same problem. CPU usage going to 100% and XP very sluggish. I have used "Process Explorer"

(sysinternals.com) to trace the problem down to the automatic updates DLL (wuauclt.exe) running under

svchost.

Turning off automatic updates helps sometimes but not allways.

XP, Windows Defender and Office all use the automatic updates system and cause the CPU to go to 100%

via svchost.

Anyone with this problem should report it to microsoft!!! I have already filed an incident report

(SRZ061102000815) and I want to keep the preasure on them to fix this problem!!!!

http://support.microsoft.com/oas/default.a...amp;gprid=37013

The more people who report this the quicker they will realize it is a serious problem they will have to

fix.

Mark.

I've also started having this problem, where the 'System' process (not system idle process) is constantly taking up at least 30% of the cpu. The cpu usage is always hovering between 90-100% (and this is a penitum core duo). The usage is also all happening in the kernel (since the the graph shows the red line all the way at the top). No one process is taking a large amount, but a few of them are using around 5-10% each

After reading a few forums, people suggested it might be an issue with the display drivers, but when i update to the any newer (including latest) drivers I just get a black screen on boot. I have to go into safe mode to roll back the driver.

The video card is an nvidia 7300GT (pci-e).

The system is unbearably slow, but once it does manage to boot up, it gets slightly faster. I thought that norton might be the culprit, but when i tried to uninstall it I got a bsod.

This only started happening recently so i dont want to place the blame fully on norton, as its been on the system from the beginning.

I also a have a couple of minidumps (the system bsods about once a week). Any help would be appreciated

My problem seems to have 'fixed itself'

I'm no longer having the constant 100% cpu, but i still get seemingly random bsods. I've looked at the mindumps, but cannot make much out of them ....

The part where it says "Unloaded modules", and has a bunch of driver names ... are those the drivers that were still loaded when it crashed?

I think it's Windows Defender getting it's updates. That's my guess (with the svchost). Mine does it every so often. I've turned off Windows Updates because it would freeze it up for quite a while (I DO keep my computer up to date via the website, though). Also, Windows Media Player 11 downloads a new Urge store database thing every so often and can put your CPU at 100%. I think the final has fixed a few of those issues though.

I'm sure if you have a computer with HT or dual core, you wouldn't notice any preformance issues, but I've not moved up yet (hoping Newegg will have some after thanksgiving sales :)).

I wish it was that simple

Ive applied every single update available for my motherboard (GA-8I945PLGE-RH), including bios update. I've tested the ram with memtest86, i've run the prime95 torture test. Ive run a whole bunch of other utilities that are supposed to test the video card. Everything has come up fine.

The only problem is that i cant apply the any driver updates for the video card (geforce 7300 GT pci-e)

I've also applied every windows update available, but the problem still occurs.

I'll attach the minidumps from the last 5 or so bsods. Any help would be appreciated :(
