Internet Connection Disrupted When Signing in as

I'm having a very peculiar problem with my Windows Live Messenger (WLM) 8.0. When I sign in as 'online' my internet connection immediately fails, WLM signs out and I can't surf the web. I have an ADSL Router (D-Link DSL-500) that jams up as soon as I appear 'online'. Its 'Status', 'ADSL' and 'Ethernet' lights either stop blinking or doesn't light up until I flick the power off and on to restart it.

This used to happen to me when I tried sharing files or using my webcam on MSN Messenger (v. 7.5) occasionally, so it may have something to do with that, but I'm not sure. Now it's happening when all I want to do is sign in and chat.

The funny thing, though, is that when I sign in as 'offline', I'm able to sign in and stay connected to the internet (router doesn't do anything funny) and I'm able to chat.

Has this happened to anyone as well? I've been trying to look up similar problems in several forums, but to no avail. If someone knows what's wrong and how it can be fixed, please help.

That is very strange, if you have not done so... I'd say you should contact MS and see if they can't help.

what kind of router and modem is it?

I've got a D-Link DSL-500 router connected to a DES-1008D switch.
