Rigby
Weren't they taking a huge loss on each console as it was? Link to comment https://www.neowin.net/forum/topic/497720-sony-drops-ps3-price-a-bit/#findComment-587900691 Share on other sites

Brandon Live Veteran Posted September 22, 2006 Veteran Share Posted September 22, 2006 So far they've only announced it for Japan. Still $500 for the "core" unit here. And it looks like they didn't drop the 60GB version accordingly? Must be an expensive hard drive..... The really good news is that the 20GB now supports HDMI, and I give Sony props for listening to users about that. Sounds like they were desperate to counter all the good news coming out of MS (and they haven't even made all their announcements yet). They can't just do this for Japan... that's not really fair! They fear the Blue Dragon bundle =P It is odd though, since Japan is the only territory they have a chance to do well in. I guess maybe they don't want to leave their best bet any room to fail (or they're countering the Wii or Wii60). Another concern is... from what they said before, there will only be 20,000 of these systems at that price at launch in Japan. So really this only affects the very small minority of people that will be able to find one of these cheap PS3s. Ravensworth
This sound like it's just an act of desperation to me. Especially since they did it right after Microsoft announced how low the price of the HD-DVD addon would be and 1080p support. They were already in big trouble and now they are going to try and take an even bigger loss on the consoles. Maybe they'll pull it off but it seems like they are just digging the hole deeper all the time. ienhz
Well at least they're trying to fix what they've been doing wrong. I mean, you can't really complain about a price cut, eh? :) Link to comment https://www.neowin.net/forum/topic/497720-sony-drops-ps3-price-a-bit/#findComment-587900709 Share on other sites

deck
From The Inq... WHILE THE world+dog waits with abated breath for the arrival of the much publicised but rarely seen PS3, its maker, Sony, has announced its first price cut.The world plus dog might be confused that a product, which has not even been assembled yet, might be being offered on a discount already. Apparently, Sony is already a bit worried about competition from the much cheaper Wii, and in the US, the Xbox 360. The original plan was that the console would cost ?62,790 or $539, depending on which side of the Pacific you were on. However, this price was widely considered as being outrageous. Sony's latest price tag is ?49,980 yen or $430. This is still expensive, but a bit more competitive when you consider it will come with its very own Blu-ray player. Ok... So. If MS was LOSING roughly 125$ or more on EVERY Xbox 360 sold in the first months after launch, how much do you think Sony is going to lose if they are dropping the price by more than 100$ on what is already a product that is likey priced below cost? Me thinks Sony ain't gonna fair too well, as it's been having some troubles for a few years now. I think Sony will be doing very well, apparently in one of the other threads someone said something like 1 Million PS3's have already been pre-ordered and many more coming, the price drop (if official) will only bolster the sales. After saying all that the PS3 could fall on it's arse and die...but that is unlikely I think. Xerxes
 Well normally anything from the Inquirer should be pretty much disregarded on the spot  , however, this has popped up else where also: Sony to cut price of new PlayStation 3Friday Sep 22 14:37 AEST AP - Sony will lower the price of its much-anticipated PlayStation 3 video game console. The move comes as competition heats up in next-generation gaming between Sony, Microsoft and Nintendo. advertisement advertisement Kyodo News agency, citing Sony executive Ken Kutaragi, reported Sony will cut the price to Y49,980 ($A568.15), from an originally planned Y62,790 ($A713.77) Source: NineMSN (that is MSN Australia for those who dunno) Link to comment https://www.neowin.net/forum/topic/497720-sony-drops-ps3-price-a-bit/#findComment-587901110 Share on other sites
Laughing-Man
They fear the Wii =P It is odd though, since Japan is the only territory they have a chance to do well in.Agreed.Japanese gamers are going to care jack sh** about buying a Blue Dragon Xbox360 bundle when RPGs they actually want are on the PS2, DS, and PSP. Unless if MS is going to bundle the next Final Fantasy or Dragon Quest with the Xbox360, they are not going to spend a ton of money on a new conosle for one unknown RPG. Dotdot
Meh still too expensive. Its still first gen PS3 technology, that with first gen games, never mind any poss tech issues make it a bloated and overpriced pieced of kit. Its still first gen PS3 technology, that with first gen games, never mind any poss tech issues make it a bloated and overpriced pieced of kit. But thats my 2p It's no more expensive than the ps2 when it was released, even though it has better technology and inflation has gone up. But yeah i agree it is to expensive i'll hold out for a price drop after it's released. Ambience
What's the point though? PS3s will sell out at launch, regardless of a price drop at this point. I'm not saying this is a bad thing, but I would've thought a price drop after the initial launch rush would've been far more effective which would've continued that initial demand. MadFerIt
I tend to agree with those saying this is a move to please Japanese gamers after announcing only 100,000 of the first 500,000 batch of PS3's will be Japan-Bound and will probally not apply to the U.S. However, the news about the 20gb PS3 including HDMI is great news. Glad they rectified that mistake. Link to comment https://www.neowin.net/forum/topic/497720-sony-drops-ps3-price-a-bit/#findComment-587901408 Share on other sites

If Sony indeed did what you just said, not only it cheat the people who bought the PS3 @launch, Sony will ruin its image in the business industry. You really don't want to do a price drop based on amount of units were sold.
