Missing quota tab on domain controller volumes..

Recommended Posts

We've been having some issues with users taking up too much space on server shares (home directories, public share drive, etc).. so I went to set some limits, and realized that there's no Quota tab on any of the volumes on the server which houses those shares..

I tried applying the group policy entries for disk quotas to the server in question, didn't work. I checked to make sure that the user account changing the quotas is part of Administrators and has the "Traverse Folder / Execute File" permission, it is/does. I don't really know what else to look at..

It's 2000 Advanced Server, all volumes are NTFS.. does it have something to do with the server being a domain controllers? Do DC's not have quota tabs on their volumes?

I'm lost..

Anybody have any information on this at all? Even if it's just to say whether or not it's a normal occurance on domain controllers so I know whether or not to keep wasting my breath trying to figure out what the heck is going on?

This is pretty frustrating.

Yes DCs should have the quota tab..

What machine are you on when your trying to do this? Are you logged in local to the DC, or from a remote computer?

The Quota tab does not appear on the Properties dialog box.

Cause: Disk quotas can only be set by members of the Administrators group on volumes formatted with the NTFS file system. Therefore, the Quota tab does not appear if you are not a member of the Administrators group, if the volume is not shared from the volume's root directory, or if the volume is not formatted with NTFS.

Solution: If you want to track or limit disk space usage, ensure that you are a member of the Administrators group, that the volume is shared from the volume's root directory, and that the volume is formatted with NTFS.

Manage disk quotas on a remote computer

Updated: January 21, 2005

1. Right-click My Computer, and then click Map Network Drive.

2. In the Map Network Drive dialog box, in the Folder box, type the path to the volume on the remote computer for which you want to manage disk quotas, and then click Finish.

3. After you connect to the remote computer's volume, open My Computer.

4. Right-click the remote volume for which you want to manage disk quotas, and then click Properties.

5. In the Properties dialog box, click the Quota tab.

6. On the Quota tab, click Quota Entries.

The Quota Entries window appears. Each row in the list contains information for a user of the volume.

Notes

? To perform this procedure, you must be a member of the Administrators group on the local computer, or you must have been delegated the appropriate authority. If the computer is joined to a domain, members of the Domain Admins group might be able to perform this procedure. As a security best practice, consider using Run as to perform this procedure. For more information, see Default local groups, Default groups, and Using Run as._admin

? To open My Computer, click Start, and then click My Computer.

? If the volume is not formatted with the NTFS file system, or if you are not a member of the Administrators group, the Quota tab is not displayed in the volume's Properties dialog box.

? To manage disk quotas on a remote computer volume, you must create a share from the remote volume's root directory and you must be a member of the Administrators group on the remote computer.

I've checked from both, there's no quota tab either way.

I've verified everything mentioned in those technet articles ten times over. I've been through dozens of newsgroup posts, but the only one which looked even remotely promising was -

We have recently upgraded our network to Windows 2000 and

are having a very peculiar problem. Every machine that

we upgrade to a domain controller 'loses' the disk quota

tab.

Here's the latest test.

1. Built new machine with Windows 2000 server.

2. Formatted drive NTFS

3. Opened up explorer and properties and saw quota tab

for volume.

4. Promoted server to DC and reopened properties on

volume share. Logged on with same account used on step 3-

No quota tab availalble.

Has anyone else seen this behavior before? I have

upgraded other domains and have never had this occur.

One thought is this some effect of group polices? There

hasn't been anything setup yet other than what should be

the default DC policy.

Any ideas would be greatly appreciated.

..but of course, no replies.

What account are you logging in with?? Log in with the Administrator account for the Domain on the DC - this should get of any doubt that its anything related to permissions.
