BF2142 includes spyware

Upon further investigation it's a load of FUD, no different than the ads in PlanetSide. The odd billboard on the side of a building, and the game tracks if you look at it or not. Cookies/any info not in BF2142 are not gathered.

You, sir, are the first other person that plays(ed) Planetside I have seen outside of the Planetside forums!

For those who don't know, SoE put banners that have ads in rooms and buildings that many Players pass by very often, like the spawn room. They are pretty large, but really don't obstruct things really... except for that one air force ad... but anyways, it is easily blocked by changing a file.

While I was quite surprised at EA at this, I think we should first see what the ads are like. For example, Google searches what your looking at and makes ads that correspond to those, and then make them show in an intrusive manner. If it were to be like that, IMO it would be alright. However, if it is more like pop ups or really big and intrusive, or it slows down your computer, then there might be an issue.

They may be alright, as long as they don't play sounds, but I still don't see any point in having in game ads in a game that cost $60.

No it is not fine, nothing as intrusive as this is fine, you don't play a vidoe game to watch commercials, you do it to have fun, relax, or be competitive. Are you watching ads while you play football, baseball or rugby? Are you watching ads while listening to your music? This will spread, and it's just going to continue downhill until someone stops saying "Just ignore it" or "Their rules, their game". And stands the hell up for rights of the consumer, companies need profit of course, but when does the companie's product turn into nothing more then a ficade and ad to watch instead of use?

Same with television ads, this is your OWN GOD DAMN HOUSE THEY ARE INVADING, YOUR PERSONAL SPACE. Not public, not leased from the city to display, not on loudspeakers at some public event, but your own damn house.

GG EA. You ****Suckers. (did not write **** I just put in the little stars :p)

But you choose to watch/listen/play the program/game. It is still their product and they are able to put as many ads in as they want until people stop watching/buying.

Wow, I didn't realize EA is doing so bad financially that they have to resort to ads in games

I guess it's easy enough to ignore them, but still. The fact that a huge company like EA is doing something like this before the smaller development companies is telling. Makes it kinda obvious where their priorities lie...

indeed we shall see if neowin can stand the digg effect. Would suck to get slashdotted also.

lol that's for sure.

I really don't like the idea of advertisements in game. I mean, I see enough on the Internet. But I guess EA just sees it as more money for them. I wonder if they think about the customer at all?

Their game, their rules.

Theres also social morality. Good way to **** people off.

You pay for cable TV, so should you not expect to see ads on that as well?

I've come to expect ads on the networks, NBC, ABC, etc. but I do not want to see ads on the Digital Cable menu that I PAY FOR.

I liked the look of steak (a.k.a BF2142). It looked ok since i played the demo. But im anal about having stuff on my computer i dont want. If they cant be bothered to freaking ASK to have stuff sent from my computer then they can get stuffed. They just lost alot of customers fom their sneaky and outright rudeness by putting that on there. Screw you Dice! I hope you get a molatov cocktail through your window.

Will be shipping mine back for a refund ASAP. Unfortunately, it already shipped before hearing about this.

If you have any friends that bought this better warn them before they break the shrinkwrap and/or seal(s)... most places won't accept returns once the shrinkwrap is broken.

i use to play planetside (mercenarys werner :p ) till the servers kept crashing all the time  if the money from the ads was going to server maintenance and keeping subs down then fair enough but its not. BF2142 is not an mmorpg so why have ads in the game ? EA/Dice are just being greedy and im voting with my wallet and not buying this crap game. Besides they still havnt fixed BF2 yet thats still got loads of bugs in it

I don't have a problem with billboards in games, it can add a nice touch like realtime weather conditions do and make the game more absorbing etc.

However, this game is supposed to be set in 2142 right? exactly what are they going to be advertising? the new rocket boots from phillips? I mean if it will detract from the feeling of the game, that being a futuristic shooter, by advertising products from over 100 years before hand then i do not see the point.

EXCELLENT Point! Your right, seeing a ad for a Ford while driving some futuristic vehicle will definitely seem out of place.

Then again, ads for Viagra and other "personal" enhancements might add a bit of hilarity to the game.

add some hilarity? what like when you accidentally drive off a bridge while reaching for a pad and pen to take down the number?

err i mean yeah, hilarity ;)

all ads have to go through the art department of EA. and the statement from dice was that the software DOESNT track what you view outside of the game. It only tracks how long you look at an add INGAME and shows more adds based on what you are viewing on the in-game billboards.

Slashdot stories have become pretty crappy in there quality and accuracy.
