Need for Speed Carbon demo!

Recommended Posts

I checked out the screenies, and have a question. There is one screenshot with an icon in the upper left corner of the screen. then in another screenshot, there is a green arrow looking thing next to it. Is this some sort of meter for something? I was trying to get a handle on all of the items on the screen, and the thing in the upper left kinda got me scratching my head.

Wow, this really is the worst Need for Speed game to date.

I had high expectations after watching all of those gameplay videos they released a while ago.

This demo of the game is a complete disaster.

- The gameplay is exactly the same as Most Wanted.

- The new customization options are useless.

- Motion blur is far too blurry.

- Lower detailed levels.

This is another of EA's big rip-offs. Now I know why this game had such a short development period.

It's an amateuristic Most Wanted modification.

Ok there, what the hell was that...Most Wanted which is a YEAR older has better looking graphics at lower requirements. (I have an ATi Mobility X1400).

I can almost run Most Wanted on HIGH @ 1024*768 with no lag, and I set this game to LOW (everything) @ 1024*768 and it lags like a bitch and the graphics look terrible even at HIGH!

This is the worst NFS game to date as Vista just said in the above post, I'll stick with Most Wanted. Also, all NFS games have had the same development period if you don't know. There is an NFS game released almost EVERY October or November of a year. They usually start right after they release a new game.

This is Need for Speed Underground all over again...

EDIT: I should also add the racing in this game very much like Gran Turismo or something, the cars are too slow.

I will have to disagree with Vista on the gameplay part and agree with TheGriffin, it is nothing like Most Wanted as that was fast; action paced; adrenaline pumping, this is just slow and boring.

And yes it looks terrible even with all the settings maxed out, runs fine on my conroe though.

Oh and its freakin' dark, feels like I'm driving around in a doom3 level or something.

good question

I agree with you. After making us wait for so long, the gave us this crap. I am so happy I didn't order the game yet. After testing the DEMO, I will definatelly not buy this game at all. One of the worst NFS (if not the worst) series, definatelly. Shame on EA

Demo Review

Firstly I have to say Im v.impressed by the Demo. Previous games have lacked that X Factor and for me the last great NFS:U game was the original NSF:U itself. This however I really like and will now continue with the reasons as to why.

Physics wise the game is much much better. The game now has a much lighter feel to the car and its response on the road. Vehicles now lift off the ground and distort mid air as you apply steering. Something i found a little sluggish and un-responsive.

Worringly tho if all the vehicles handle this way then that might count against the release, however for me this is a plus point.

Gameplay wise things arent to different to previous games. With many modes much like there previous counterparts. Drift mode now seems a little more forgiving and has a much nicer feel to it due to the improved physics in the game. Tho some die hard fans may feel its a little too easy.

Canyon races are an interesting addition tho from previous games i would of expected a little more work here as they seem to be little more than a slightly more fleshed out version of the non-integral chase races in NFS:U2

Personally i wasnt too happy that should you fail the 2nd half of these theres no way to continue from the halfway point.

Lastly the autosculp feature is a very very nice addition with a much higher level of car customization available. Tho sadly I feel cheated that the previous games customization options have gone in favour of this.

But overall the game has nice well polished feel to it and does seem to be going back to its roots, be it at a loss of some of the features that made previous games good.

8.5/10

Agreed to both of your posts. This demo is utter crap compared to even Most Wanted's demo.

Graphics look pale and blotchy, at graphic settings identical to that of Most Wanted. Initially I thought it was because I had outdated ForceWare drivers (83.60, but these drivers work best for the games I play).

The first circuit race... bleh. Didn't seem as fast paced as races in MW. What's up with 'call crew member' anyway?

The drift was purely WTF when I tried it with the Gallardo. I turn a little bit and the car instantly flies to a 70? in no time, like as if the ground was slippery as hell - just likeUnderground>.:

Can't say much about the canyon race, although it took me nine tries before I switched to the Lancer Evolution... and won the race instantly.: The facial animation of that driver washorrible> - why couldn't they just render it using CGI video instead of using the in-game engine? They rendered a short 10 second video of the camera hovering over the mountain... couldn't they have just kept it that way? (Although one nice improvement is the racers are no longer the same generic brown-haired guy with a leather jacket behind the wheel.)

The menu system sucks, period. One, I can't adjust any controls until I enter the game. Two, no options to customize HUD (which looks like crap) or change from the imperial to metrical systems. Three... it just feels like a direct port from a console. Any previous NFS game demos before this had UIs appropriate for PC games. I'm hoping this UI is only like this because it's just a demo. And four, no options to shut off that damn soundtrack... yet.

I'll probably take running from cops over this "owning" of territories, thanks. This is as bad as having to dress up your car just to get anywhere in the Underground games.

edit: Come to think of it, even though I wasn't too fond of Underground 2 over Underground 1 because of its forced free roam mode and useless "media attraction" crap, the racing and detail levels were far improved in Underground 2, as well as the overall feel of the cars. I can't say the same for this when comparing it to MW.

you should read up more on Carbon.

what a disapointment :( just sad really. it is atually worse then most wanted. I cant tell from demo if its boring, but its nothing as fun as MW was with police mode, where you could play countless hours. here you just finish and be done with it :(

the drift mode is terrible! and also the new mode where you score points is lame, and very hard for some reason.

it feels very childish old scool game for some reason...scoring points. bah!!!!

graphicaly it was not bad, but then again i cant judge very well since its night :p and i guess full game wont have day maps.

anyway its not worst nfs...nfs7 was worse :D for you dumies its undeground :) so this is like a mod for already bad game :D

    • I don’t get why if I bought the game on the last get I needed to pay $40 to upgrade to the new version in the first place and people who love the game and play a lot would have upgraded already so this is just PR and a chance to grab new players who forgot the game long time ago I think
    • The term "use" is doing a lot of heavy lifting in that headline. "Use" can mean opening ChatGPT occasionally to ask for the definition of a word or information about a specific topic. If you frame the question around how many people use it as a daily driver in their work or personal lives, that number is a lot smaller. Those are the people who pay for AI. Nearly everyone else is happy to use it for free, but doesn't see enough value in it to pay for it.
    • No support for Windows Hello!
    • I think you meant the "ntfs3" driver, but yes there have been a lot of fixes for it in this release and previous releases, not 100% sure if the issue you mentioned is fixed though. In any case, the new "ntfs" driver in 7.1 doesn't have that issue (at least, no reports of such have come thru), but your kernel needs to explicitly enable support for the new driver first (like how CachyOS kernel has it), and you need to edit your mount points in /etc/fstab to use "ntfs" instead of the other drivers.
    • Epic Games says Unreal Engine 6 will help developers "build content faster" using AI models by Pulasthi Ariyasinghe Epic Games is rolling out the latest major update to Unreal Engine 5 today, and at the same time, the company also dropped some information on the next-generation version of the product, Unreal Engine 6. This was already revealed a few weeks ago alongside the new Rocket League upgrade reveal. The company says it is combining the features of Unreal Engine and Unreal Editor for Fortnite to create this new version of its popular media creation tool. On top of creating entire games, the new engine will also focus on letting developers operate large-scale live service titles more easily, whether by shipping content into their own ecosystems or into Fortnite. The use of large language models is also mentioned here, with Epic saying it will be a core part of the engine. "We see LLMs, generative AI models, and tools like Claude and Codex playing a central role in helping you build content faster while maintaining the creative control you need," adds the company. Here is the rundown of what's new about version 6 of Unreal Engine: With all these changes to the programming model, portability upgrades, and generative AI integration, Epic says the new version of the engine will "change a lot about how games are made." The company aims to ship Unreal Engine 6 into early access in late 2027, with a full release planned for 12-18 months later. Epic Games also dropped a lengthy blog post about the new Unreal Engine 5.8 update for game developers over here. The release is focused on delivering better performance, customization, and streamlined workflows for development teams. This will be the final major update for this version of the engine before Epic switches to focus fully on Unreal Engine 6's early access launch.
