I couldn't get it to install. Several dll's fail to register. Using MS's dependency app I found out they link to DWMAPI.dll, a Vista dll related to Glass effects. I'm guessing something on my system has WinDVD confused into thinking I have Windows Vista installed instead of XP SP2. There are also posts about this error appearing on a few sites (Google: WinDVD "Error 1904"). Unfortunately most of them aren't in English so I can't get any help from them if they've even resolved the issue. Guess I'm not meant to take it for a spin just yet and I'm stuck with v7.

I got it to install perfectly. It does take time as it seems to load up all the languages for google toolbar for later optional installation. It's also a much bigger installer at 115mb compared with 55mb for WinDVD 7. I've found it to run smoothly and do see an improvement over windvd 7 platinum. I've got the following specs:

Dell XPS m1210

T7200 2ghz Dual Core 2 processor

2gb 667mhz DDR2 ram

Intel 950GM Graphics Card

You also need to download vcredist_x86 from microsoft for it to work seemingly. Available here:

Download WinDVD8 from here:

Thanx but found the problem. Though WinDVD7 had no 'official' AMD support it still installed without problems. This one 'officially' hates 32bit AMD CPUs. It seems to be the one common denominator for everyone who's gotten the Error 1904 messages.

This is not true! WinDVD8 can run on an AMD CPU.

I have an Athlon XP CPU and WinDVD8 installs and runs just fine!

Ok, I have to be honest. At first I had the same errors, but I was able to relate them to a faulty installation of the MSXML6 Parser (KB927977), which I got for "free" with dotNET 3.0.

Somehow, this parser does not install properly through Windows Update.

After downloading and manually installing KB927977 the installation of WinDVD8 went without any problems.

I'm not claiming that this is the solution for everybody, but I think it's worth a try.

Having now SOME experience with WinDVD8, I think it's a better player than WinDVD7.

Kind regards.

    • I really wonder if this has to do with the built in VPN or "private DNS" of browsers that trip up legal requirements like cookie consent and Cloudflare (to avoid all the botnet attacks we get). And BTW some botnets still manage to get past Cloudflare, we are constantly having to tweak it to block malicious traffic that ultimately cause a DDoS.
    • CPPC states can also be messed around with in most UEFI settings but aren't as robust as the ones that the Windows Scheduler can provide! Make sure you look into what your motherboard also has before customizing for the Windows Scheduler.
