Running Windows Vista Applications in Windows XP

Recommended Posts

Would you be so kind as to share that png and some quick instructions :) Also anyone having trouble with the weather gadget being unable to get info?

The PNG is attached below & the instructions are :

1. Download and save the PNG file ( background) below.

2. Open ur sidebar.exe with a resource editor ( I'm using Resource Hacker).

3. Open the tree menu named RCData on the left, and then find the item named 20035 under which u'll see 1033. Now right click on it and choose "replace resource", when the popup window is opened, browse to the png file u've downloaded, type in these settings :

Resource Type: RCDATA

Resource Name: 20035

Resource Language: 1033

4. Press "Ctrl+S" to save the changes. It will make a backup for u automatically.

Note: RCData 20035 is just for the sidebar on the right while 20034 is for the left one.

Regards

oh BTW the weather gadget is not working for me as well , perhaps it has something to do with default windws services running in the background

Please tell me I can run vista's spider solitaire from XP!!

Use the dependency walker program. It will tell you what classes/modules the exe "depends" on, then regsrv32 those and it should work. You do need all the spider solitaire files from a vista install.

That's how you can run any program.

The same method probably will also allow you to run any software independently (like off a usb thumbdrive).

Also, I don't think you have to register dlls if they're in the same working directory as the executable. Kinda like DNS resolution, or program execution order (which to execute first... exe, com, vbs, wsf, bat...), [theory]windows has an order in which it looks for dlls. working directory, system32... [/theory]

It's not actually working with all Vista apps yet. Like I mentioned before, Rafael has a status page up to keep track of how him and Zoronax are doing on VAIO.

Also, you do have to register the dll's even if they're in the same directory as whatever app you're trying to run or the app might not function how it should. That's why soo many people are having issues getting the sidebar to work correctly because certain dll's don't want to register.

You might want to go look more into VAIO before you start giving out any advice. Keep in mind this is only a PREVIEW BUILD. Rafael has made it perfectly clear that not all of Vistas apps are working right now.

Quick question for mods

Is it okay for me to post the entire VAIO runtime ( or whatever) & windows Vista Sidebar (RC2) as well as visual C++ Runtime over here.

Technically VAIO is freeware & RC2 is for the entire public to use .

Vista 5744 Sidebar Installer

Download

Extras (Fonts & C++ Redist.)

Install Instruction:

- 1st Download, Extract and Install "Extras.exe" (Fonts & C++)

- Now Download, Extract and Install "5744_Sidebar_XP-Install.exe"

- Insert Vista RC2 Serial (Optional, you can skip this without worry)

- Reboot

- Enjoy!

============================================

NOTE

* The Installer adds the C:\VAIO "Enviroment Variable" and Registers "VAIOext"(Shell Extension).

* Rebooting will register sbdrop.dll, wlsrvc.dll and sidebar.exe on Login, "Silently" using RunOnceEx and the Regisry.

* You dont have to patch or register any dll or exe its done automatically.

* Adds Shorcuts in All Programs -> Accessories and Quicklaunch

* I also added Uninstall entries in "Add-Remove Programs" it will uninstall both VAIO and the Sidebar

* You can later add the Vista RC2 serial just by going into C:\VAIO and cliking on "setup.bat".

Thanks for posting everything :) however I tried both methods - from the start of this thread to these last 2 links you supplied. I end up with the same result "The ordinal 60 could not be located in the dynamic link library ATL.DLL."

rahul's worked for me, i don't know what to tell ya. hopefully these guys will have a way to solve ur problem.

Can you tell me the size of your atl.dll? mine is 73 to 74kb (compressed folder/uncompressed folder)

I read in another post elsewhere, that my atl.dll is probably too old/new and must put a ?current? copy into the same folder as my sidebar folder. i tried this with an atl.dll that is 70kb from my vista install and it gives me a totally different error which I don't want to get into. I'm guessing if I can find the right version of this file, it wil work for me. (i hope) :)

sorry the edit button disappeared. ahem...

i solved the atl.dll error... download a working version here - http://www.dlldll.com/atl.dll_download.html

be sure to backup your old one for safe keeping! thanks again rahul!

how do we add gadgets? i went to the windows live site and downloaded a few i would like, but i dont know how to install them. also, is there a way to change the news feeds? all it seems to want to let me see is microsoft feeds.

thanks.

You have to rename the gadget to a zip file, then extract it and rename to folder to "Weather.Gadget"

(Using Weather as an example)

If it's not already, put this folder in the Windows Sidebar/Gadgets folder,

Then right click on Windows Sidebar and click 'Add Gadget' and it should be there :)
