WMP11 running on 2003 Server

Recommended Posts

I am in the same boat i would like to use the file server part of it ( I hate all the comments on the forum as to why dontcha run xp)

some of us have reasons heres one i have HP proliant hardware drivers for raid cards etc dont exist for xp. you have to run server for all drivers to work. now i have a dsm-520 media lounge to watch movies, music, photos over the network wired/wireless what better place to serve these files from then a server (go figure). I also have wmp 11 installed okay on it the check box will not work on share media libary because im guessing no upnp . upnp would alow it to identfy clients etc... that is a new reason at least for me to get upnp working on w2k3 (I believe Ms will see this need and fix it in the future while keeping it secure enough for server. If i could put xp on this thing i would but no drivers out there. this is a ML350 g3 incase anyone knows a way to make it work. any help would be apprecated or is there another way that can do this that im not looking at.

thanks

Have you tried the W2k3 drivers with XP?

It seems strange to be using such an expensive setup for home media tasks, why not use a standard PC with XP?

For people who think that Server is faster than XP Pro, and people that think XP Pro is better than XP Home, and XP Home just sucks: here is my input on the subject.

Here is what people tend to forget:

--> Windows 2003 server is essentially the same as XP Pro and Home (at its core). There is little advantage to having one over the other.

example. Calc.exe comes with all versions of Windows. Surprising? Nope, they share the same components. Ever wonder why the TCP/IP networking protocol looks the same in XP as it does in Server 2003? How about the System Properties window? How about the Computer Management console?

The Windows family share similar components and its core is essentially the same. You will not receive any benefit surfing the internet or playing games if you are running Server as opposed to XP Workstation (Home or Pro).

Windows Media Player comes with Server because XP Pro & Home come with it. When MS updates an OS, it will most likely package the latest version of a component (in this case WMP).

If you plan on deploying Active Directory, assigning IPs, sharing files, web hosting, etc, etc... then I would suggest getting server. You would need it to use those components.

However, if you surf the internet, browse neowin, play games, etc... then XP Home is more than enough to complete those tasks. Even XP pro is more than what the average user needs.

Server 2003 is not superior over XP. Each is geared to meet different needs.

Even the latest incarnations of Server 2007 look and feel like Windows Vista. They share the same core components.

Forgot to add that the reason drivers work on both XP and Server 2003 is because they share the same Hardware architechture. Notice how device manager looks the same in both XP and Server 2003.

Also, the pictures that outline help descriptions about text that includes the words "workstation" and "server" in the same sentence prove nothing. It just goes to show that the development team are covering both 2003 Server and XP because the component is found both in XP and 2003 Server.

Microsoft Vista and Longhorn 2007 Server is an example of how the MS dev. team creates components that are shared. The networking stack (which was rewritten for Vista) will be found in both Windows Vista and Longhorn (2007) Server.

There isnt a different team that develops different Operatings systems at MS. MS does not have 1 team for Datacenter Server, and another team for Vista, and another team for Windows 2003 Server Enterprise, etc, etc. There is a core team that develops a base (or core) OS. Then there are teams that use the Core OS and develop components that are specific to an OS. Why do you think MS is able to offer 7 different versions of Windows Vista? Do you think they have 7 different teams? Same goes for their server class.

One last thing, I have not had only to restart Vista twice for the past 3 months now.

Sometimes its just the placebo effect where you (or someone else) convinces yourself that the product is better.

It's like the rock that Lisa tries to sell Homer that keeps away tigers. ;)

or how people think Vista is 100000x faster than Windows XP. ;)

As far as I know, Windows server 2003 does not support upnp which is what the network sharing functionality. (it has been discussed on this forum before)

if you want it, go back to the desktop OS you should be using in the first place... :p

So which way did you use to get it to work? I have tried the install.bat that Mr. Dick C. Normous posted on the original thread (https://www.neowin.net/forum/index.php?showtopic=461539&st=60), but am still getting the Crytography Service. I have tried everyone's fixes to try and fix it with no change. HELP!

Just get Sp2, and run the installer using compatibility layer (once you uncompress wmp11dist.exe and wmp11.exe

To get back on track.

I've just come around to the idea of using w2k3 as a media centre. (New flatmate has xbox 360 & it's a brilliant piece of kit i think)

I've also got WMP11 working fine on w2k3 except the media sharing.

I read a few posts up that UPnP isn't supported on w2k3.

Does this article not cover it? http://technet2.microsoft.com/windowsserve...3.mspx?mfr=true

If anyone has a comment that might lead us to getting all this working great! Please share. If you want to show us how clever you 'cos you know all the versions of 2003 server. Please don't, it's kinda sad.

Mark.

fraid your article seems to be just how to open the firewall ports for it. Maybe it's time to move on from what was a bad idea in the first place to something that is designed to do the job (windows home server).

    • Microsoft Weekly: Surface Laptop Ultra, Windows 11 context menus, Build 2026 recap, and more by Taras Buria This week's news recap is here, with Microsoft announcing the new Surface Laptop Ultra, fresh chips from NVIDIA for Windows on ARM, a no-build week, fixes for Windows 11's context menus, gaming news, reviews, and more. Quick links: Windows 10 and 11 Windows Insider Program Updates are available Reviews are in Gaming news Great deals to check Windows 11 and Windows 10 Here, we talk about everything happening around Microsoft's latest operating system in the Stable channel and preview builds: new features, removed features, controversies, bugs, interesting findings, and more. And, of course, you may find a word or two about older versions. At Computex 2026, together with NVIDIA, Microsoft announced the Surface Laptop Ultra, its most powerful laptop to date, powered by NVIDIA's RTX Spark processor. Details about this computer are currently scarce, as Microsoft has only revealed certain parts of its specs. So far, we know that the computer has a 15-inch mini-LED display, a rich set of ports, a powerful processor, and all-day battery life. It also comes with a new wallpaper, which you can already download here in full resolution. The Surface Laptop Studio is not the only NVIDIA-powered Surface, which Microsoft unveiled this week. At Build 2026, the company also debuted the Surface RTX Spark Dev Box, an odd-shaped desktop with a 20-core NVIDIA Grace CPU and an NVIDIA Blackwell RTX GPU with 6,144 CUDA cores and fifth-generation Tensor Cores with FP4 precision, connected via the NVIDIA NVLink-C2C chip-to-chip interconnect for high performance. According to Microsoft, it can run models with up to 120 billion parameters locally without relying on cloud GPU infrastructure. These two new Surface devices are likely to cost quite a lot, and for those who need a more affordable device, Microsoft is preparing the next-gen Qualcomm-powered Surface Pro and Surface Laptop. This week, details about these two devices leaked in plenty of detail. Other announcements at Build 2026 include the following: Microsoft unveils new security tools for IT admins and developers building AI products Microsoft announces Scout, an OpenClaw-powered personal agent for enterprise customers Microsoft unveils MAI-Thinking-1 reasoning and MAI-Code-1 coding models Microsoft announced a new Windows 11 native command-line utility Microsoft unveils Majorana 2 quantum chip, accelerating commercial timeline to 2029 Microsoft believes that AI agents will eventually replace apps through Project Solara Microsoft introduces Web IQ, a Bing-powered search system built for AI agents Last week, Microsoft released a new Experimental build, which introduced a major Start menu upgrade. It now lets you toggle off specific parts of the menu without affecting other features, resize the menu, and hide additional UI elements. We published a closer look here, so if you want to know what Microsoft is cooking without enrolling in the Insider program and installing unstable builds, check it out. Speaking of new features, many users are very annoyed about the way Microsoft delivers them. Recently, a frustrated user shared their experience with gradual rollouts, and even Microsoft engineers admitted there is a flaw in the system that prevents new features from applying properly. One of those new features includes the ability to uninstall AI models in Windows 11 with a single click. Windows 11 is finally getting fixes for its slow context menus. Marcus Ash from Microsoft confirmed that the company is working on fixing Windows 11's context menus. Reworked context menus are going to be faster, simpler by default, and "configurable to what you use most." According to Marcus, Microsoft will share more details soon. Windows Insider Program Windows 11 preview builds, released last week, are now available for download as standalone ISO files. These days, Microsoft regularly pushes new images, allowing users to clean-install its recent Windows 11 preview builds faster and easier. If you want to try the latest Windows 11 features without jumping through the Windows Update hoops, get those new images here. Sadly, Microsoft did not release new Windows 11 preview builds this week. Come back next time. Updates are available This section covers software, firmware, and other notable updates (released and coming soon) delivering new features, security fixes, improvements, patches, and more from Microsoft and third parties. Microsoft is preparing new features for Teams. However, the front-facing USB Type-C is data-only, and there are some quirks with the computer's memory, so check out the full review. The AMD RX 9070 GRE has been released worldwide, and we published a benchmark review comparing this powerful graphics card to the RX 9070 XT, 7800 XT, the NVIDIA RTX 5070, and RTX 4070. It has solid, balanced performance, plenty of RAM, and low temperatures, but watch out for mediocre ray tracing performance and not the best efficiency. Also, we reviewed the Cuktech 10 Ultra, a compact, high-power charger with four ports and a big display full of various stats. This tiny charger can pull nearly 120W and spread that power according to each connected device's needs. It also comes with a high-quality 240W cable, three power modes, and retractable prongs. The best part? It is quite affordable, just make sure you have an outlet placed in the right spot to benefit from the built-in display. • Let's goooooooo! I've been loving the entries so far! I still have to finish Rebirth (things have been busy!)! Excited for this next installment.
    • "Revelation?" I was hoping for this episode to be called "Reunion". Oh, well... In a related note, the Final Fantasy VII compilation has received an EC entry, short for Ever Crisis. For those who don't know, it already had AC, BC, CC, and DC entries, short for Advent Children, Before Crisis, Crisis Core, and Dirge of Cerberus. I hope it doesn't get an FC entry becaude that would be a freakin' crisis.
