QuarterSwede
well, I got the tarball files unpackaged and all and did make install to NVIDIA_kernel-1.0-3123 but when I typed in mcedit /etc/modules.conf bash said that the filename or directory was not found. After that, I decided to see what Ctrl+Alt+Backspace did and now I am stuck at a command line interface and not liking it. How do I get back to KDE and where can I find mcedit??? I am really trying here guys. Thanks for all of the support so far. I am getting somewhere at least. You all are helping me understand Linux, thanks!!! Again, How do I get back to KDE and where can I find mcedit???

QuarterSwede
Well apparently I killed X because it won't open in GUI mode, it keeps reverting back to the command line interface. I tried using the rescue option on Mandrake 9.0 Installation Disc 1 but that didn't work for me. Any help here?
makmak
check the log. /var/log/xfree86.log or something. #ls -al list the directory and go thru the date. Select the latest date and #more xfree98.log Go thru the log. Its usually tell you what gone wrong. Also ensure that the x-window font server is running or not. #ps -ef | grep xfs This will perform a process statistic and grep xfs daemon. the xfs startup daemon can be located something like.... /etc/init.d/xfs start --start daemon /etc/init.d/xfs stop --stop /etc/init.d/xfs status I once encountered my x window not starting up. I found that the xfs daemon did not start magically. The above paths r Redhat's path. Mandrake more or less is there. I got 2 systems running with the following stuffs RH7.2 and RH7.3 All my libraries and binaries are rather updated. I not much of a linux guru...but i guessed i can made do it as my *nix workstation for everyday pc computing P4 1.6Ghz 384mb RDRAM GF3 Ti200 128mb SBlive value Running on RH7.2 with kernel 2.4.19 mesa 5.0 and a updated Xfree86 binaries. SDL's revision also latest. Nvidia driver loaded. UT2003 run pretty good here. Sustaining about 35fps. I can also plays DVD movie using oggle's DVD player. PIII747 512mb SDRAM ASUS CUBX GF2 MX 200 32mb RH7.3 and kernel 2.4.19 Updated as above. Keep trying....

Epsilon
you can also do pico /etc/modules.conf or emacs /etc/modules.conf its just a choice of which editor you think works best for the task. be sure to post more questions should they need answering. MulletRobZ
Ah. Epsilon
Webgraph: its not neccesary doing symlinks or moving files anylonger, nvidias build script does everything and nvidia modules doesn't use mesa, they have their own.
QuarterSwede
Thanks for all of the help folks. I decided to just do a reinstall to get X back up, unforntunately during the setup I accidentally told the OS to use the integrated graphics (hey at least the 3D works). I tried to use Nvidia's older driver that comes with Mandrake 9.0 (beta 3d drivers apparently) but it said it couldn't find the rpm. Anyway, getting back on track, I accidentally selected the integrated graphics and after the installation was done I changed it back to the nvidia drivers (this time it let me pick the older nvidia drivers) but when I restarted X it failed to load properly so I am now stuck back in the console only. I have no idea how a log can help me because I don't have that much experience with the linuxOS. I may just have to suffer with only 2D. Oh well, if anyone knows where I can find a really good tutorial about installing older linux drivers (that actually works! and is very easy) for a newbie like me I would appreciate it. Thanks for all your help once again, I really appreciate it.
makmak
Epsilon is right abt the Nvidia driver that do not required Mesa. Recently, i upgraded 2 linux boxes from mesa 4.0 to mesa 5.0. After compiling and installing Mesa 5.0. I noticed my RH7.2 P4 could no longer play UT2003 demo. Its said S3TXC not supported and exit to command prompt. The same thing happened to my RH7.3 PIII. Then i decided to re-install my NVIDIA linux driver again. And great, UT2003 kick again. So i suspected that the MESA's opengl has overwritten the Nvidia's OpenGL driver. Thus causing the UT2003 demo unable to use the S3XTC features. Of course before re-installing the Nvidia driver. The OpenGL rendering are still working fine as i was running all the Opengl demo that came with MESA 5.0 Just my pointer.. I also noticed that Nvidia posted Mandrake driver. I not sure jstphish has try them before. Reason is those nvidia driver are stock driver compiled to that distro release. The source file are really for people who r running off a customised Kernel. Example. Redhat 7.3 shipped with kernel 2.4.18-4 I running Kernel 2.4.19 customised. I cannot use the stock Redhat 7.3 nvidia driver. Croz, the drivers are compiled for 2.4.18-4. Not kernel 2.4.19. Work around is download the source rpm and compile it. Then install it.
