AVG Free.. No Longer Free?

Well my grandma who I set up with AVG Free says she is getting a message saying her version of AVG Free will no longer be supported after January and links her to the AVG site where she can buy a different version. Is AVG going to stop supporting the Free version?

What version of AVG do you have? 7.1 is no longer supported, but 7.5 continues to be free.

Ahh.. that was kind of my question, if 7.5 was going to be supported or not, bc im guessing she just has not updated it to 7.5.

There will always be a free version of AVG. It's just that the older free versions are being discontinued. She should really upgrade to 7.5, since it's both free and fixes a number of issues that were present in 7.1.

They should have made this clearer, I've seen quite a few posts and articles about the confusion, as well as my dad and my parents friends both asking me what they should do.

My younger brother was also confused, downloading the pro version and asking me why it was asking for a serial :p.

Problem is that AVG are a company, who have a responsibility to make a profit.

The link from the popup saying "AVG Free 7.1 is not being supported, click here for 7.5" takes you to a page with a lot of info/links on the commercially paid version.

However, 7.5 free is available.

Can't blame them - they provide a good AV solution for free - it's not unfair to make you at least be aware of the commercial version and attempt to upsell.

I'm sorry but you obviously have not done your research. AVG has the worst detection rates in comparison to its other free counterparts like Avast and Antivir.

Avast is very very good. Personally though, I use ClamWin, although the lack of real time scanning will put off a lot of people.
