Mac OS X 'Leopard'-related Discussion

This is all good and true, but do a lot of people here actually use the Terminal extensively everyday? I think the only time I've ever been in it was to move the Dock to the top of the screen.

I use terminal extensively (and multiple terminal windows at that) when working with Ruby on Rails. I need to keep a test Mongrel server running in one terminal instance while issuing commands to Rails (like generating models, etc.).

@craybox: I haven't installed Quicksilver yet. I don't see a need to. Spotlight can even do complex calculations now.

thnx good to know, think i'll do a clean install when I get mine.

10.5 is the best OS I have ever had the pleasure of using. Being incredibly picky over details, this is damn near perfect for my tastes.

I still can't get over the wealth of productivity improvements and tweaks, let alone new features.

It's as if Apple went over every part of the OS with a fine tooth comb and said, "How can we make this the best it can be?" That's 10.5 in a nutshell: Ultimate Refinement.

Even the damn re-organization of the Network SysPref is great. :p

(Mail is so frieken fast! DVD Player doesn't crash anymore on damaged discs!)

Nice this is all good to hear. However have any of you had problems with tiger not keeping a wireless connection on your macbooks? my Macbook used to stay connected but lately it disconnects a lot. I have a C2D Macbook. Im hoping they fixed this issue.

Man I just love this - It's amazing that an OS upgrade can dramatically increase system performance like this does.

I know. It's damn amazing. My system got a huge performance boost, but maybe it's just because I did a clean install too. I dunno though, because even when running off of an external drive, Leopard was faster than Tiger for me. It's just much, much faster now.

does ne1 know if leopard will be able to restore users from just having the users folders backed up on a network drive ?

e.g

/cray/applications e.t.c.

/missus/applications e.t.c.

or do i need the /users/username

PS ne1 here done an upgrade and noticed an equally fast leopard ?

Can anyone convince me why Coverflow in Finder is efficient? Other than having shortcut to view content within each file directly (Preview), it is viewing each file separately and listing only a limited number of files in a linear manner. The way I see it is having all files spread in thumbnails (Thumbnail view on Windows, or Preview with a number of files on Leopard, the spread) and Preview of any file maximizes the view. I dont see how it is a convenient and productive solution.

Simple, details. CoverFlow gives a much larger view of the files (whether photos, documents, presentations, etc) you're viewing and thus makes it easier to pinpoint the one you want to open or examine. See my PDF comment/image before for a relevant example.

As an amateur photographer, Cover Flow within the Finder (no third party applications) is a god send.

Most are saying it runs cooler now. Probably because before a lot of apps were single threaded and took a while for one core to do but now that both cores can do it in much less time it probably makes a lot less heat that way.

It's definitely not only on Multi-Core Intels. My friend has a G4 Powerbook, it used to run at around 170F even after a fresh install... now he's running at about 115, even after sitting it on my leather couch for over an hour.

I've been reading through the past 10 pages and I'm drooling.

Faster performance, more responsive spotlight searches, gorgeous coverflow experiences with pdf files in smart folders, side dock now 2D instead of the horrid 3D side version....drool drool drool.

My copy won't arrive until next week so keep the reports a coming.

Conclusion:

upgrade: xp --> vista = slower computer after upgrade

upgrade: tiger --> leopard = faster computer after upgrade

;)

I was going to say that in my earlier post but didn't want to spark a flame war

+1 To you for having a bigger set of brass ones than I

Purolator FTL. They don't update their package tracking until 10am, once a day, and "priority overnite" means 2-4 days from the US to Canada, then it's shipped to you as fast as possible. So I don't think I'll be getting Leopard as soon as I had hoped, despite ordering it within 2 hours of it going on sale.

Man, am I ****ed. I won't get it till Monday, and I won't have time to install it next week; needs to be on the weekend so I don't throw my school working schedule off.

Or download a copy and install it now but not feel guilty because you legally bought a legit copy? ;)

I don't download programs illegally anymore, but I would never want to obtain an os from some torrent or warez site. Someone could modify the files and hide a virus or keylogger in there. Eeek :(
