Mac OS X 'Leopard'-related Discussion

Recommended Posts

Have you seen the OS X source code to verify the claim that, "...Leopards [sic] coding very [sic] very refined."?

I have seen parts of OS X?10.2, 3, and 4?and while I didn't read all 85+ million lines but I have looked at a few interesting parts like file system drivers, the task schedule, the application launcher, screensaver, text editor, and parts of WebKit. What I did read didn't stand out as incredible I didn't see anything gross either. The code that I read was easy to follow, concise, and didn't have any glaring performance issues or dangerous assumptions (and really, I'd expect nothing else from shipping software).

Also, you don't necessarily need to read the source to get a feel for how something is written: you can get a lot of information about a code base by exploring the public APIs/framework headers and watching performance. Compare WinAPI circa 1998 to the .Net frameworks: You don't need to read the source for .Net to see that it's a much better engineered.

The ZFS filesystem was also rumored to be part of this release. Can anyone cofirm/deny?

ZFS read is included. But to get write you need to download a kext from the developer website. The rumour is in a future update the final write kext will be included but this is unconfirmed.

Worked fine for me last night but looks like they're messing with their servers at the moment.

Thanks

Anyway, just got it installed. Came back from my 2 week holiday with Leopard sitting in my house. I wanted to try it out, so i decided to do an upgrade from Tiger, probably a bad thing since i'm experience quite a lot of lag (boot up and accessing files). When my new external hdd comes, i will do a brand new install.

Bootcamp Assistant is still there and looks about the same. Disk Utility though can non destructively resize partitions now.

Wow this is neat.

When you're viewing all of your Spaces (F8), you can press the C key to collect all the windows from all spaces into the first space. Press C again to send them back where they started.

Time Machine Airport Disk workaround? http://forums.macrumors.com/showpost.php?p...mp;postcount=50

Software Update is back up for me.

Another quick hint, for those who want to bypass the stacks grid/fan view and go straight to finder like in Tiger: CMD + Click. ;)

Apple is slowly putting updates on Software Update... which did not seem to be working yesterday, but now it works.

All I need now is Mail + Hotmail. httpmail is disabled and doesn't work anymore...

Also, I need a workaround to display an icon in front of a stack... I am thinking about copying a dummy application into the folder and changing its icon.

The Bootcamp point is somewhat moot now anyway as Apple have pulled it as a download for Tiger and now just redirect you through to a features page about Bootcamp for Leopard.

So unless you can find an old copy floating around, its Leopard or bust for bootcamp! :(

The old Boot Camp installer should be timebombing soon though.

Got my copy this morning as well. I've spent most of the afternoon backing stuff up on my macbook so I could do a clean install of Leopard. All is installed now. I don't want to set up mail yet though, I'm waiting for IMAP to be enabled on my gmail account :D

    • Looks like the 7.1 is fake effects, can it at least do real 5.1? It says 'virtual 7.1' in all descriptions.
    • You can't, if you didn't notice, it doesn't support surround at all, it's right in the spec list.
    • Hi — I’m always interested in soundcards. Like displays, I just want to know I’m getting as much clean “sonic juice” into my brain as possible as the years take their toll. I’m not entirely sure what to take away from this review, though. It doesn’t really tell me whether the AE‑X is a good product or who it’s actually for. Most of what I’m getting is: there’s a driver to install, here’s what it looks like, and here’s what’s in the box. There’s a lot of emphasis on the SPDIF input. When you mention not needing to switch headphones between console and PC — does that mean the PC has to be powered on just to pass audio through? That seems like a fairly big waste of energy. Is this more something a streamer would use alongside a capture card? How are you testing the sound? (Also, you might want to clarify that you’re using the headphones in wired mode when you mention they’re wireless.) You mention the lack of EMI shielding — how much real‑world difference does that make compared with typical motherboard audio? On multi‑channel: what exactly isn’t supported? Does this mean Windows spatial audio (Dolby Atmos for Headphones, DTS Headphone:X, etc.) won’t work, or just that the card itself doesn’t decode surround formats? And are there any true multi‑driver “surround” headphones left that would even use that? You also highlight support for high‑impedance headphones — but what does that translate to in practice? How does it compare to driving the same headphones from a normal device, and does it make any difference for everyday, lower‑impedance models? In short, who is this card actually targeted at?
    • Yes, THIS is wordart, not the styling that can now be done. Wordart was all about those curvy words, that you could change the path of, like making words go around a circle. I don't think it can be done now, right?
    • Just saw a news report of a Waymo driving into a flooded road.
