Full October 2002 Game Sales Data (console-only)

Oh great yet another person trying to compare PC hardware to game console hardware. Ok here we go...

(1) Of course PC's are gonna have more powerful hardware. They are MULTI-TASKING machines. So it's gonna need to have some powerful to do e-mail, internet, word processing, 3D design, graphic design, games, etc. Consoles on the other hands are DEDICATED gaming machines and need alot of power to run the games. You are comparing apples and oranges.

(2) Like in #1, PC's need enough RAM to adequetly run all games, e-mail, internet, word processing, 3D design, graphic design, etc. So of course it is going to have more RAM then consoles. Deciding the amount of RAM needed for a system is a tricky issue. Sony, unfortuantely, decided wrong by putting too little RAM. That is why the textures in some games don't look as good as they do on Gamecube & Xbox. Again, you're comparing apples and oranges.

(3) Again like in #1 & #2, video cards on computers aren't used for just games. A game consoles main purpose, incase you haven't picked up yet, is to play games. A video cards performance varies on the quality of the drivers, while a game consoles video performance is always the same.

Oateater's statement of:

pc > xbox > ps2 > gba > gc
Is based on a matter of opinion. One machine is not better then the other. It all depends on your taste and what makes you happy.
I mean how many times can Mario face Bowser or save a princess??

Well considering that Mario has been around for what? 15 years? And the games are still critically acclaimed by people smart enough to figure out that GAMEPLAY is KING, not GRAPHICS. What does it matter how a game looks? If you were to take away great graphics from a game and it has no gameplay value, then the game obviously sucks. I dought you have ever given the Gamecube a chance and sat down and actually played a few of the games for it.

It wouldn't make sense to make a game console out of the G4 or a current x86 CPU b/c they would be too expensive to mass produce. It makes a little more sense to either make a custom CPU or do what M$ did and use an older chip (i.e. the Pentium III 733Mhz).

As a former employee of Best Buy...

Gee makes me wonder why you are a "former" employee. You need to do more research on stuff before you try to sound like you know what you are talking about.

Man, this kind of debate never ends. It all depends on the person, if you love Nintendo and their history in the gaming industry you'll stick with GameCube. If you like the name Sony cause you have a Sony TV or DVD player and that it was the first company to release a high performance console than you'll by PS2. If you are a beta addict and like PCs with windows and products from microsoft, you'll by XBOX.

All in all, there is no winner. Who cares about sales, most people by PS2 probably cause parents buy em for the kids and ask the sales person for advice and their respone maybe bias. Since it's selling more than the others, people assume its better and buy it and that adds to its image.

Hardware wise it goes - XBOX, GameCube, PS2

Game wise it goes - PS2, XBOX, GameCube

History/Experience wise - GameCube, PS2, XBOX

You have too look at exclusives too. Nintendo has CAPCOM, XBOX now has RARE

I decided on a GameCube cause I like Games like Resident Evil and Metroid. Also because I already have a DVD Player dedicated to DVDs so why need it in a console. Why not buy a console dedicated to gaming only.

Anyway that's my two cents

if you think the n64 (which they stopped even making games for) is good for the history side of nintendo there's something wrong, i think nintendo should just stop selling hardware like sega did. they need to realize they can't compete anymore.

Yes in respond to your questioning why I was a former employee, it was because I moved on to bigger and better things...IE....working for a computer company.

Secondly, I agree Nintendo should stop selling hardware, true they may have been around longer than the others, but that doesnt really mean that they are a better system.

yah, nintendo is gonna go outta bussiness real soon... if anyone is gonna drop outta the concole market anytime soon it'll be M$

Okay, refering to your huh??? What he was saying was The PC is a better system than an Xbox which is better than ps2 which is better than game cube.

Well I would have to say that yeah no kidding that a PC is a better system for games, there are millions of reasons, but I'll be nice and name just a few.

Number 1: Processor, lets look at todays current processors, they are all about in the 2.0 Ghz range where what XBox is only 700 or 750mhz??

Number 2: You can jam pack a PC full of RAM up to say 2 Gig of RAM, now what gaming system can touch that?

Number 3: Lets not forget video card, how can you compare a 128 MB card to any video game systems graphics.

So basically what I am saying is that you cannot even put a PC against any other system, really it isnt fair because it is no match.

- = - = - = - = - = - = - = - = - = - = - = - = - = - = - = - =

Jago.... to say that you have to be smart to look past the design of the console and for the "treat" of the games, well I have one thing to say.......We have.

The actual console for PS2 is much better than Game Cube, plus the fact there are more games, plus you can run your PS1 games on a PS2. Now if you have a Game Cube that can play N64 Games, then I'll give you props but until then, I as well as the millions......... :woot: AND MILLIONS :woot: .....of PS2 gamers will agree that sony very well has the better platform. I mean how many times can Mario face Bowser or save a princess?? After a while the basics behind Nintendos games have lost touch, and I will say that Nintendo started out as a gaming system for kids, and today it still is a gaming system for kids. Nintendo has been out of the gaming race for a long time, and it will take them a while before they can have a system that can match up to the par of Sony or even Microsoft (Blah).

Hmm...heres a thought? What if apple took a G4 Processor and made their own gaming system? It def. would be a match up for Xbox, considering that the G4 will blow by the Xboxs processor. Anyway....I can't believe how far off base this thread got from the start......Ha, well that goes to show how one person can change the way a thread goes..........

Ha, thanks StevoFC.

biggest poopoo i've heard all day. great effort jmbosi to show your ignorance. ;)

Every company is going to have products that fail. Sony hasn't been around long enough to have systems fail on them. M$ hasn't been around long enough a console to fail, but it has had plenty of software fail. No company is immune to bad products.

It is important to note that SEGA has had more failings then Nintendo.

32x

Sega CD

Saturn

Nintendo:

N64

I won't include Dreamcast b/c it was a great system and died much sooner then it should have. Nintendo isn't going anywhere people, they already stated that they are in this business to stay and are already working on the GBA & Gamecube follow-ups.

This something that "SPYDER" (Neowin Mod) stated in another thread that is part of my sig now:

can i ask a quick question? what does it matter how many games there are? will you ever own all of them? no. forget quantity of games..look at the system that has the games YOU like. make that your deciding factor. --SPYDER--

All the systems are good and what makes happy, makes you happy. So let's not start on borderline insults **cough**twist**cough**

I guess some people can have a mature discussions and others can't.

I will say that my two all time games for Nintendo will be Tetris, and Duck Hunt.

i got 3 words for ya...

Super Mario 3

(then it was all downhill)

I got 3 more words for ya...

Turtles in Time ---------- scratch that, how about i say

Super Mario Brothers All-Starts, more like 5 but its a collection of all the worst games put into one giant game. I think they did that so you didnt have to lug tons of games when you where heading to your buddies houses.

don't forget virtual boy in the list of nintendo screw ups...gotta love red lines on a beefed up pair of goggles...

Oops, I guess I forgot one.

i got 3 words for ya...

Super Mario 3

(then it was all downhill)

Did you even play Super Mario 64, Super Mario World, Yoshi's Island, Super Mario Sunshine?

If you had then you wouldn't be saying that...

buddy seriously, i feel embarassing to own a ps2 after seeing your poopoo argument. please don't act like you speak for millions of ps2 owners out there. i feel ashamed.

AMEN to that brotha!!! It's nice to know that you and I always seem to agree on some things. :D

I get the feeling you have something against Nintendo...

Not sure why tho...

Did you even play Super Mario 64, Super Mario World, Yoshi's Island, Super Mario Sunshine?

If you had then you wouldn't be saying that...

yes actually i have played all of them...super mario 3 is easily as good as super mario world and SM3 was for the regular nintendo

as for super mario 64 i think i hate that more than any game i've ever played

what about luigi's mansion? haha you left that one out because even you know it is horrible.

I'm not sure why you guys are ragging on the N64. It was far from a failure. I own a ps2 and an N64 and I still find myself playing Goldeneye, Perfect Dark, and other n64 games as much as ps2. N64 is by far the best multiplayer system ever. You can have your online gaming crap. but it will never be the same as hearing and seeing your buddy's reaction next to you.

Long live N64!!!

Do you have any idea how many good games support 4 players on the ps2? Not very many. I can think of a couple. PS2(and xbox) will never compare to the N64 for multiplayer gaming.

HAHAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA

you've never played Halo have you?? or Time splitters 2, let's not forget perfect dark when it comes out. unreal, mech assault, ghost recon, there will be Halo 2, all the sports games....i can't think of any else right now.

yes the thing i have against nintendo is its terrible

Wow, thats a great argument you got there...

I didn't mention it b/c I don't think it is on par with other Mario games. It's not terrible, but it is still an enjoyable game tho.

    • Hello, It would appear so, according to https://finance.yahoo.com/news/how-to-hide-your-home-on-google-maps-apple-maps-204146687.html. Regards, Aryeh Goretsky
    • Hello, The Nvidia Founders Edition 3080 video card is approximately six years old, correct? Have you looked into whether replacement fans are available for it? Perhaps replacing those will improve cooling, especially when combined with cleaning the card's heatsink and replacing the thermal interface materials. Regards, Aryeh Goretsky
    • Hello, While ~104 GB of space may seem generous (at least compared to other e-readers which have 8-32GB), I feel at this price point the device should have a Micro SDXC card slot for expansion, particularly if it allows audio books to be installed and played. I hope to see more reviews of 6" phone-sized e-readers on Neowin in the future. It will be interesting to see how they compare. Regards, Aryeh Goretsky
    • Sandboxie Plus 1.17.8 / Classic 5.72.8 by Razvan Serea Run programs in a sandbox to prevent malware from making permanent changes to your PC. Sandboxie allows you to run your browser, or any other program, so that all changes that result from the usage are kept in a sandbox environment, which can then be deleted later. Sandboxie is a sandbox-based isolation software for 32- and 64-bit Windows NT-based operating systems. It is being developed by David Xanatos since it became open source, before that it was developed by Sophos (which acquired it from Invincea, which acquired it earlier from the original author Ronen Tzur). It creates a sandbox-like isolated operating environment in which applications can be run or installed without permanently modifying the local or mapped drive. An isolated virtual environment allows controlled testing of untrusted programs and web surfing. Sandboxie is available in two flavors Plus and Classic. Both have the same core components, this means they have the same level of security and compatibility. What's different is the user interface the Plus build has a modern Qt based UI which supports all new features that have been added since the project went open source. The Classic build has the old no longer developed MFC based UI, hence it lacks support for modern features, these features can however still be used when manually configured in the Sandboxie.ini. Sandboxie Plus 1.17.8 / Classic 5.72.8 release notes: Added added DisableCustomTitleOpt=[process,][y|n] to allow [#] sandboxie title markers on custom-titlebar windows (Delphi VCL, Qt, Electron) that were previously skipped to prevent DWM repaint CPU loops #5387 Changed updated bundled ImDisk driver to 3.0.2 #5419 Fixed fix Suppress logs for expected non-user SIDs #5422 SbieSvc.exe: SBIE2218/2219 error when run program as administrator #5417 fixed explorer.exe crashes in Application Compartment when Huorong Security is installed #5423 Download: Sandboxie Plus (64-bit) | 23.5 MB (Open Source) Download: Sandboxie Classic (64-bit) | 3.0 MB Links: Sandboxie Website | GitHub | ARM64 | Screenshot Get alerted to all of our Software updates on Twitter at @NeowinSoftware
    • Hello, Christian Maas' XVI32 is a nice (and very small) hex editor. Speaking of hex editors, many years ago a colleague and I who both worked at Tribal Voice managed to edit a copy of the company's PowWow instant messaging client to make it behave better now that all of its lookup servers and other server-side tech was gone.  The program didn't support NAT (RFC-3022 was introduced in January 2001, the same time Tribal Voice was shuttered), but it still worked okay if you manually set up port-forwarding on your router.  The server at http://powwow.jazy.net/ hosts a copy (usual warnings about downloading and running untrusted code from random internet servers apply). I occasionally use some tools like Funduc Software's Search and Replace and Application Mover when I need to make mass-edits to text-based files or move programs with a hard-coded installation directories, respectively.  When I need to figure out the exact LCD panel inside of a laptop, EnTech Taiwan's Monitor Asset Manager is my go-to tool for that purpose. JD Design's website (now hosted on github.io) has a number of interesting freeware and shareware utilities.  I used to use their TouchPro utility to set the file timestamps on software I was mastering to match its version number (e.g., version 3.00 of a program had all of its files dates set to 3:00AM, and so forth). Karenware has a number of interesting freeware utilities, too. Regards, Aryeh Goretsky
