Installing VMWare Tools under Ubuntu

Recommended Posts

Hi all,

I have been having a play with Ubuntu and like it very much. I have found some knowledge on running Ubuntu under VMWare but due to my lack of Linux knowledge, I cannot seem to install the VMWare tools in Ubuntu.

I have tried Sudo to get root access and install the tools, but nothing seemed to happen. Bottom left of the screen it says the tools are not installed still.

Please forgive my noobness, but would someone very much mind posting a noob step by step instruction on how to do this. I get the feeling this has probably been asked before.

Any help is greatly appriciated. PS I am enjoying the command line again, takes me back to my dos days :-)

Cheers,

choppingman

What is the Guest OS that you're installing the Tools for? The Tools are Guest independent. I've only installed the Tools for Netware myself, and there is a Server VM Administration Guide on their website. I'll find link for you.

Here -->Tools Install

Here are several other guides you might look at such as the Guest OS Admin --> http://www.vmware.com/support/pubs/server_pubs.html

Hi there,

I should have explained myself clearer. I am running Host OS Windows XP pro and the guest OS in VMware is Ubuntu. Followed those links and still could not get VmWare Tools to go for me. I was logged in as root and can mount the VMware tools onto the desktop.

Again, please excuse my noobness to Linux.

Thanks for the reply.

I'm not expert on it either, just trying to help. I was just making sure on OS. Anyway, did you use page 50 of that link I posted? I've got VMWare running on SUSE SLES10, with Ubuntu Server, and Netware 6.5. I haven't tried installing the VMTools in Ubuntu yet, but I will work on it tomorrow at work and see if I can come up with an answer for you. Which version of Ubuntu are you running?

Maybe this link will help http://www.abbeyworkshop.com/2006/06/04/ub...re-install.html

or maybe -->Click Here.. Just scroll down a few posts for that one.

I don't know the exact steps you are taking to install the tools, but here is what I did. I'm using vmware server btw. Turn on your Ubuntu vm.

***Do this before installing the vmware tools (at least I'm pretty sure you have to...): Open a terminal. $ sudo apt-get install build-essential.***

Now go to the "VM" menu then click on "Install VMWare Tools..." A cd should be mounted on your desktop. Open it up and copy the *.tar.gz to your desktop. Extract it to the desktop. Open up a terminal and go to that folder. ( $ cd ~/Desktop/vmware-tools-distrib <-----or whatever the folder is called) Do a $ sudo ./vmware-install.pl .If you used the defaults while setting up VMWare, you should just hit enter at each prompt. Everything should be installed, however I don't know if it's running when you reboot the ubuntu vm.

Press VM -> Install VMware tools...

Go to mounted CD, copy VMwareTools-*.*.*-*.tar.gz into Ubuntu desktop (or anywhere else) -> extract it

Start the Terminal, change folder to the extracted one, and then type: sudo ./vmware-install.pl

Follow the instrunctions

It took me an hour to understand this ;)

Apparently you already installed it on there, according to the message. (However I am not sure if vmware player is installed on your ubuntu, which might be why you are getting the message, if you are totally sure that you haven't completed an installation of it)

    • Let me guess, just big hyped cut scenes for what is really just more run around in the same old static urban zone machine gun vs. sniper game play.
    • I am not seeing a huge difference there.
    • This is what I came here to say even if just for a dedicated Windows PC gaming box. Gaming is the only use case have to use Windows these days.
    • The Outer Worlds 2 gets an October release date, reveals companion details by Pulasthi Ariyasinghe After Avowed, Obsidian Entertainment's next grand RPG was already revealed to be releasing in 2025, but during the Xbox Games Showcase today, it finally received a firm release date: October 29. Check out the new story trailer above. While the original was set in Halcyon, this time, the story is set in Arcadia, a brand-new setting that's described as a lawless frontier. Also cut off from Earth, this land is pressured by human conflicts as well as mysterious space-time rifts. "You’ve been sent in as an Earth Directorate agent, but how you handle the mission – who you help, hinder, or exploit – is entirely your call," says Obsidian today. "Build your character with expanded traits, flaws, and backgrounds that shape every decision and unlock new ways to fight, sneak, talk, or blow things up." The RPG will let players get involved with three clashing factions this time: The Protectorate, Auntie’s Choice, and The Order of the Ascendant. Each of them is attempting to advance their own version of humanity's optimal future. Each of these factions has tout own hub areas, followers, audio design, and propaganda elements, with the war between the trio changing all of these as the story progresses depending on player choices. "RPG systems have been reimagined for this sequel to give players more freedom and more flavor," adds the company. "For example, traits and flaws dynamically evolve based on how you play. Steal enough and you’ll be offered Kleptomaniac, which boosts loot sales but risks auto-theft when you so much as glance at an item." Obsidian also detailed the companions players will be able to meet and ally with in their journeys: Niles: Another Earth Directorate recruit torn between duty and defection. Inez: A former experiment from Auntie’s Choice with a grafted combat edge and a moral core. Aza: A chaos-loving Rift worshipper with a taste for violence and room to grow – maybe. Marisol: A stoic killer from the Order of the Ascendant with calculations to settle. Tristen: A walking tank and judge from the Protectorate, looking to dispense justice – or redefine it. Valerie: A floating, chirping support unit with unexpected upgrades and untapped potential. The Outer Worlds 2 is releasing on October 29, 2025 across PC, Xbox Series X|S, and PlayStation 5. As usual for an Xbox game, it will be available to Game Pass subscribers on day one for no extra cost. Don't forget that Obsidian also has Grounded 2 releasing next month into early access too.
    • I love space RPGs, and this one will no doubt scratch that itch. Im still modding the crap out of Starfiled. Can't wait.
