Zune Firmware 1.2 is out!

Recommended Posts

The Zune firmware update 1.2 is out! While this upgrade doesn't contain any cool new features, it enhances performance a lot!

When I usually go through my pictures, I used to get the little loading circle thingy once every few pictures. Now, I can hold down my left button and scroll through all my pictures super fast with no load thing! I went through all my pictures several times with no load.

Also, I have not noticed the random freeze when going through menus since the update.

Needless to say, while this may not include new features, it is a must have!

If your Zune doesn't automatically update when you sync it, follow these directions taken from www.Zuneboards.com.

Are you having troubles installing the firmware? Try manually updating.

1. Plug your Zune in.

2. In your Zune Software, on the left you should see your ZuneTag.

3. Right click your name, and click "Check for Zune Device Updates."

4. The rest is pretty easy.

Cheers, and enjoy your faster Zune! Now lets hope 1.3 has a clock! This just makes me love my Zune more and more!

UPDATE: A day after the firmware update, they have upgraded the PC software, now making it compatible with Windows Vista! Now all you lucky Vista RTMers can enjoy the Zune too!

What's new in it?

I was on the wall with Zune vs. iPod and ended up getting an iPod. I'm sorry Zune will come out with some cool crap now.

There is no new features in this firmware upgrade, but it instead fixes all the performance issues that I have seen with the Zune.

A very good upgrade if you ask me. And here is the kicker for me: the Zune has only been out for what? 4-5 weeks? And yet it already has a very nice update like this.

Woot for Microsoft!

no, but be patient. It takes about 2 minutes once it hits that point, Legend. Watch the Zune screen and you can see it doing things.

Oh :/ It wasn't doing much, just said "Connected", so I cancelled it, unplugged it and reset it and did it again. Wrong thing to do? It's doing it again, doesn't seem to be doing much, shall I just leave it?

Your happy because they had to update it already? After such a short time

My point is that you buy a new item, and within weeks you get an update for it. I don't buy a TV and get an update within a few weeks.

The Zune was perfectly fine without this update. It was still very playable, and the once in a while 2 sec lag was not an issue at all, unless your a speed freak.

I am happy because this shows that the Zune team exist and cares about its product by releasing an update to make it even better. Once again, it was fine before the update, but this makes it even better.

So while it may be no "game changing" update, it was certainly a nice "Hey, we're here and we care about you" update.

Now if this is a pathetic attempt to flame the Zune, you have failed. This post is not about a flaw in a Zune, but praising it. Take your failed attempts somewhere else.

I ain't flaming anything, I am stating that if things need updating so soon after release (be they microsoft, Apple or whoever), then maybe they shouldn't be rushed out.

Good god. Some people...

You'd be upset if it had a performance update a year after release. "They're slow coders."

You'd be upset if it had a fast update a few weeks after release. "It wasn't done yet."

Welcome to reality bub. itunes is at version 7 and they still have sucky stuff. Software, hardware, and firmware are in a constant state of advancement - it's called technology. If you don't believe in the general principles, go back to cups and string.

The only thing you should have a right to complain about would be if something were broken. Guess what, nothing is. Complain at another camp, please.

No matter what, you will always, always, always have something that can be updated on a product after it is released. It is the nature of software and technology. When dealing with deadlines, sacrifices have to be made to get the product out in time. All major software is like this. I don't agree with this philosophy but am force to abide by it from time to time.

So for MS to fix the issues so soon is a good thing imho. You're looking at the glass as half empty while we're seeing it as half full. You'll have one side saying, "Wohoo! Yippee! YAY! AWESOME!" While another saying, "What a piece of crap! An update already? It JUST came out!"

Would you have preferred they waited six months? Didn't think so :)

If this is aimed at me, no good. I don't own a mp3/music player of any kind. I am just stating the way I feel about this particular subject.

And if it was updated a few months later, people would complain too. Just when IS a good time to issue an update? And have you considered that before a big product rollout, lots of them have to be manufactured, which takes time? Just what are they supposed to do, sit around and wait or get to work on the NEXT firmware upgrade while the first batch are being made? This firmware has probably been in development for months now.

Looking at your signature, I would say you do a lot of updating. It would be somewhat hypocritical to berate any other technology for known advancements through minor updates in code at any point in time. Noone can attest the product was broken in the first place.

It doesn't matter how soon or how far out the update was provided.

How does my signature say I do a lot of updating?

Is your TV updateable? But this leaves more to be said for the "rushed out the door" theory, if this is such a big performance fix after a few weeks, why was it released with performance issues?

OH GAWD lets not get into tv updates... my flat panel plasma screen had to be "updated" because of HDMI software issues on it... talk about a fun process... took 3 techs at my house working for 2 hours to "update" its software via a RS232C com port on the darn thing.......

    • This got me thinking, would you rather a self driving car prioritise protecting its passengers or everyone else? I'd choose the one that keeps me and my kids safest. At some point, these cars have to make those choices already, don't they? Wonder if we have a way to find out what way they lean.
    • The proportion (or number of iterations) has nothing to with this aspect of Copyright I am describing. In short, it doesn't matter how many times the manager tells you to change something or how. Your work product is always YOURS until and unless you then assign that to the person representing the client/company, usually for financial compensation -- either in salary or as a subcontract work for hire payment. if iterations determined copyright, then businesses would have learned to just keep making changes until they could claim they owned the copyright, without having to compensate the artist for their work. And that would be BAD. The only place where the amount of changes does have a role is in how much does a human modify a previous public domain work (from any source) before it is considered fair use or their own work, etc. For example, if a human makes substantial changes to a public domain (re: AI, by definition) work, then they can then claim that derivative work as their own...but NEVER the original version, of course. That's why anyone can make a movie about Dracula, for example, as long as it is based on the public domain novel, but not if they take new ideas from copyrighted movies made afterwards. As one of the people who personally advised the US Copyright Office on their recent ruling on these very issues, be assured that I specifically used the terminology precisely -- though I made it simple enough for laymen to understand it. If I made this confusing by doing so, I apologize. But, to be clear regarding your assumption that I would agree to your second statement that I quoted above -- the answer is NO. If AI does the work, no matter how much "direction" you give it, it cannot be copyrighted. All AI generated content is in the Public Domain and therefore the copyright cannot be assigned to ANYONE, even you -- until and unless substantial modifications are made to it BY A HUMAN BEING (yourself or a contracted artist/writer/etc.) and then that copyright on the derivative work is legally (in writing) transferred to you. This is a critical distinction. And it is important that people, especially AI sloppers, understand this. For example, YouTube is not paying AI slop generators for the copyright, etc. of their AI slop. What YouTube is doing is sharing AD REVENUE for permission to publish your AI slop. Copyright/ownership/rights never come into it. Importantly, that means that anyone can copy any AI slopware on YouTube, etc. and rehost it anywhere they want, even back on YouTube, and there is nothing legal that YouTube can do about it with regards to copyright protections, ownership, DMCA, etc. Anyone is legally free to use any AI slopware in any way they want. When this ruling was pending, I warned Disney legal of all of this before they did their OpenAI deal -- that it would literally dilute their entire IP portfolio forever. They ignored that warning for the PR and stock bump. But that is why, when the ruling came down last year, Disney quickly extricated themselves from that OpenAI deal, even eating the initial upfront fees -- followed closely by OpenAI ending their entire AI video generating business model. They adjusted their PR release dates to make this less obvious to shareholders, of course. Phew. I hope that this clears up the key distinctions for you and anyone reading. If you have any additional questions or even hypotheticals about AI and Copyright, please feel free to ask.
    • Each of the devices displayed on this page now has a little volume meter next to it to show if there is audio actively playing. About time.
    • Owing to the nature of Windows feature enablement updates, it was distributed over Windows Update services as a complete system upgrade rather than as an ordinary cumulative update
