It is an alpha release, do you know anyone that has installed it succesfully? There could be a number of reasons for the error. I myself will not pretend to know these, but it could be as simple as specific users only allowed in the alpha testing, corrupt installation or something WinXP related.

Cheers

Dave

Ah okay. I didn't know it was actually available on the ICQ ftp site. Guess its there own stupid fault for leaving it available to everyone. Must admit tho I have had previous alpha versions of ICQ myself.

I actually use ICQ99b v3.19 Rev A . Works good for my needs. I hate ad's :)

Cheers

:)

I managed to download/install ICQ 2001a Alpha.

I probably did it the long winded way, but I downloaded the contents of the icq2001a ftp folder, and made a local server (192.168.0.1) to link it to my computer. I then edited an ini file to change the location of where the alphatest file is kept, and put the word "Yes" in the same file. That way no matter which UIN I used, it would always think I was an approved Alpha Tester!

Nice idea but thats still one step ahead of me. I cant get the installer to run as it says the error message I stated in the first post. Seems to be an XP/ActiveX error if the first install crashes. Other ppl have had the same prob, still looking for a solution to that one, then I'll try the ftp trick :)

prrrrrft, why does nobody answer a question about:

Can not create UI Object

Error: 8007007E

damn, am I the only one who can help ya'll out ?

when you get the above message, go clean your registry with RegCleaner:

http://www.jv16.org

with the installation of the ICQ2001a client some info is beeing added to the registry and will cause an error while you're try'ing to run the installer again...

so, download RegCleaner, do a powerfull registry cleanup and run the installer again, than you can see the nag screen is gone..

have fun,

tCC.

btw, for all you ppl who can NOT install this version, here's some fix:

download the setup files from:

xxxxx

and follow the next steps:

- extract the zip archive in your temp directory

- run ICQInstl.exe

- when setup is asking for a UIN press ESC (!!!)

- select advanced installation

- select the options you wish to install

- let the setup download & install

after the installation you enter your own UIN & password and ICQ is installed and ready to use.

have fun,

tCC

uh, fun:

when you have installed ICQ2001a and removing it (don't, hehehe), then the above installer isn't working anymore, cause you get the Error: 8007007E again.

here's my solution:

- remove c:program filesicq

- reboot your computer

- clean your registry again with RegCleaner (i love that tool)

- download the fix at xxxxx

- extract is anywhere

- run ICQ2001a_Fix.exe and close it (when the white downloading files screen is visible)

- go to your temp directory and replace the 2 ini files from the icq2001_fix.zip (or maybe there's only one, just copy the 2 ini's into you temp root)

- run ICQInstl.exe

- press ESC during the UIN question

- install again

have fun,

tCC.

i didn't patched the .exe files, just change some things in the ini's...

guess this is an alpha bug also, maybe the next version is more secured :)

how to remove the annoying ICQ sounds by some tweaks, ICQ alpha can't disable them:

remove the startup sound from ICQ

- open regedit

- goto HKEY_CURRENT_USERSoftwareMirabilisICQOwnersPrefs

- change the string value "PlaySound" to "No"

remove the other sounds in ICQ

- remove or rename the directory c:program filesicqsounds (* scroll down)

- goto control panel - sounds

- change default beep into "none"

- open regedit

- goto HKEY_CURRENT_USERControl PanelSound

- change the string value of "Beep" to "no"

- Logoff and login again

start ICQ and the sounds will be gone.

* personally i like the incoming message sound, the rest are useless.. (to me)

if you want other sounds to be ENABLED in ICQ, make a directory Sounds again, under program filesICQ and only add the wav's you want to hear into that directory.

have fun,

tCC.

    • Surprise! We still can't get it right. With the current state of AI, the crappy software, the huge mega-corporations that back all of these idiot things, I think we are a very long way away from SAE Level 5. I, for one, will never get in one.
    • Nice. September/October GA?! I'll keep following it, but won't install any preview or beta versions.
    • Wow, that could have been dangerous, certainly not ready for these things. They have to be 100% or pretty well close to it. Not that I will see one i doubt, never mind ride in one, they may have them in London, but I doubt they will come to where I live.
    • Nothing kills CMF Phone 2 Pro's successor due to rising memory prices by Hamid Ganji Storage and RAM prices have been rising over the past year, leading to a significant increase in the cost of electronics for customers around the world. Many companies are now revising their plans for upcoming devices due to higher component costs and overall production expenses. CMF is the latest company to cancel the successor to one of its best-selling phones due to rising memory prices. CMF is a sub-brand of Nothing and focuses on making budget smartphones for growing markets. The brand launched the CMF Phone 2 Pro last year with some eye-catching specifications and an affordable price. While many customers may have been waiting for a successor this year, one of the company’s executives has announced that CMF will not release a new smartphone this year. And AI is to blame. As Nothing co-founder Akis Evangelidis announced on X, the company has been working on a successor to the CMF Phone 2 Pro, but with current memory prices, it cannot “build a phone that feels like a genuine step forward at a price that makes sense for CMF.” So, no new CMF phone will be launched this year. Meanwhile, Evangelidis said the company still has several new products in the pipeline, including some in entirely new categories. He added that the Nothing brand will also continue launching new products through 2026. Budget smartphones are among the first victims of the surge in RAM and memory prices, as they have become more expensive to build. The sharp increase in memory costs could also reshape the traditional price ranges associated with budget phones. Apple CEO Tim Cook also recently said that price increases for some of the company’s products are unavoidable because RAM and memory have become significantly more expensive this year. Analysts estimate that the base price of the upcoming iPhone 18 Pro could rise to $1,399 due to current market shortages.
    • Nudge me when they bring back hardware audio acceleration so I can get my EAX 5 back. We've evolved graphics to real-time path tracing, but regressed audio some 15 years back in time with this stupid software audio stack.
