NTFS drive is read only when connected to Macbook

Recommended Posts

Hi all,

I'm new to Macs and I have an external drive connected to my macbook. However, I can't seem to be able to write anything on the disk. I check the properties and says I only have "read only" access.

Any ideas? Is this a setting I can change or am I stuck not being able to edit my harddrive?

Is there a format both MacOSX and Windows can read and write to? I have a 300GB external so FAT32 is out of the question.

FAT32 is not out of the question. You can format the drive as FAT32 from OS X, you just can't do it from Windows. You still have the same restrictions on file sizes though (nothing over 4GB).

I usually only use fat32 as the go-between for different OS's, but not as permanent storage. Too primative for my tastes. I would leave most of the drive in NTFS if you use windows alot, or HFS+ if you use your mac more. If you plan to use files larger than 4GB (DVD images?) You're just going to have to pick a side until you're done working on it.

The best solution in my opinion is to format the entire drive to whatever you use most and access over network for the other PC. This negates the whole issue as long as you have 2 computers.
