NetMeeting / Remote Desktop question

Question

Hey all,

I have a friend at school that wants me to take a look at some things on her computer. I said I can do it from here if she wants. How do I setup and use NetMeeting or Remote Desktop so I can take control of her machine to do what I need to do. I've never really used these programs, because I never had the need. If you could all help me out on what to do... we'd both really appreciate it.

Make sure you have all the necessary ports forwarded, 3389 for RDP, and you'll need her external IP address. If it's XP you could enable Remote Assistance so she can see what your doing, otherwise if you use Remote Desktop the machine will be locked once you connect. Netmeeting will also work just as well.

But if you use her public IP, how will it know to go to her subnetted IP on her computer?

You need to configure port forwarding in her router. Or you can configure it in your own router and have her call you instead of you calling her. Forward port 1720 (tcp) to the computer that needs the connection. There might be other ports but right now that's all I have configured on my router for netmeeting.

If you want to see all the ports go google "netmeeting ports" or something but not all are necessary.
