How does this standalone MSN client compare to the MSN support in Adium or iChat?

Messenger 6' network connection seems to be more stable, so is the application itself. Adium just has way too many weird quirks, not saying that Messenger 6 is perfect but it's definitely my IM application of choice (next to iChat of course, nothing tops that).

bit off topic but i've never understood how messenger for mac looks great but for windows it looks crap, and how windows version has adds and mac version doesnt! just crazy.

In general I don't understand why Microsoft won't design their applications in such a way that they compliment Windows' default UI more. By using custom interfaces most of them clash terribly with both Aero and Luna.

Some of us Mac users like to complain about Apple's inconsistencies throughout the OS and it's applications (iTunes 7 for example), but it comes nowhere near the mess Microsoft is making on their own platform. :pinch:

It's weird, I don't tend to notice on Windows, but it sticks out on the Mac.

Couldn't agree with you more, Neo. It's sad, really. Aesthetics play a significant role in one's enjoyment of one's everyday work on an OS.

Not surprisingly, many users of Windows (mostly at the office) liken coming home to their macs like a refreshing glass of iced tea.

I can't believe there's still no webcam support either.

Yes, especially when they mentioned in a blog post sometime around the middle of last year that they were simply waiting on the code for Windows Live Messenger's servers to be finalized to add cross-platform video support. That was supposed to happen by the end of the year (LAST year).

edit: here's the blog post http://blogs.msdn.com/macmojo/archive/2006/09/27/774149.aspx it was actually around the end of September, and they never gave a projected timeframe, but they sure didn't make it seem like it was going to be 5 months either (which it will be next week).

It's weird, I don't tend to notice on Windows, but it sticks out on the Mac.

Probably because on Windows nearly everything uses a different UI, where until recently on the Mac most stuff was pretty standardized.

Well I can see why they didn't put any ads in the Mac version. It's simply because the user base is nowhere near as large, and they know Mac users are typically picky about design and wouldn't use the app if it was clunky and had ads, so they were smart about it and decided against ads because it wouldn't get them much revenue to begin with. Maybe they'll add them in later when the app gets more popular (or the mac itself does).

thers still that massive white space on the side of the contact window list.

does any one know how to remove it ??

That's just there because of the + sign to expand groups of contacts. I didn't even notice it until you mentioned it. Time to get a little less picky...

Doubtful. Previous Messenger for Mac versions did show an ad bar when not having Microsoft Office installed, so not until recently Messenger became completely ad free. I don't think they'll revert it back anytime soon.

It's strange that Apple never updated the HIGs to include Mac OS X 10.4 Tiger's new elements properly.

Maybe it's yet another indication that they didn't bother because something entirely new is coming anyway? :p

    • The level of stupidity at Google and Microsoft is beyond belief. All they are doing by killing this is forcing people to jump over to Firefox and ditch them all together, therefore giving Firefox the market boost it needs to finally crush them all in the end.
