I am in the Windows Home Server beta and am trying to set up the remote access feature. In the documentation, it says to forward some ports to the home server.

According to the documentation, I should be able to type in my public IP and be able to access the server over the Internet via web browser.

My setup is this: Internet => (Westell 6100 modem) => (Netgear WGT624v3 wireless router) => server and other networked PCs

I have the modem (gateway IP: 192.168.1.1) forwarding the ports to the wireless router (static Internet IP: 192.168.1.47, LAN IP: 192.168.10.1), which is forwarding the ports to the server (static IP: 192.168.10.4).

I can successfully forward the ports if the server is directly connected to the Westell modem, but when I add the Netgear wireless router (changing the settings, of course), the port forwarding fails.

I have the latest firmware and have set up the port forwarding for each router according to the documentation.

Here is a screenshot of the Westell settings:

Any help is appreciated!

okay first question is what type of internet do you have? I'm assuming DSL because the type of modem. post what your ISP is and I'll try to give you some more information.

what you're probably going to want to do is put the modem into "bridge" mode but don't do it until you know 1) If you're DSL/cable/what. 2) What your connection type is: DHCP or PPPoE.

I have DSL with Verizon, My connection is DHCP, and the modem is already in bridged mode.

Your internet IP settings are wrong, it should be set to Dymanic unless you pay for a static IP in which case that's still not a external routable address.

The "Internet IP" setting on the wireless router is what the Westell router sees. The public IP is managed by the Westell modem.

Your first problem is that your modem is actually a modem/router... I would suggest seeing if it has a "DMZ" feature and point it to the ip of the wireless router... if it does than just put the settings in the wireless router and your gold...

I searched though all the settings and couldn't find the "DMZ" setting.

I checked Verizon's documentation, but couldn't find anything there either

call verizon online dsl technical support 1-800-567-6789. we're open 24 hours a day 7 days a week. :x :x :x but if you do call they're probably going to RTV you to netgear >_>

OK, I solved it. When I first looked at the VC settings to make sure my router was in "bridge" mode, the summary said it was "Bridged".

Upon further investigation, I clicked "edit" to edit the settings, and I noticed it said "routed bridge". I changed it to "bridge", logged on to my wireless router, and entered the IP, gateway, and DNS addresses found in the "routed bridge" settings on the Westell modem.

Everything works perfectly now!

Thanks for the help!

Um so you setup your wireless router internet port as static? Is that what your internet connetion is - static IP? If not its quite possible in the future when your ISPs dhcp servers hand out that IP.. your connection will go down.

Once you change your westell into bridge mode -- you should setup your wireless router as whatever your connection type is.. if your suppose to get an IP from your isp using dhcp.. then then is how you should setup your wireless routers wan port.

You have 2 options here, you either turn your westell into a "JUST" a modem -- which it sounds like you did. Or you use your wireless router as an access point, and allow your westell to be your NAT device and where you port forward, etc.

How to Use a Wireless Router as a Wireless Access Point

If you did turn your westell into JUST a modem - great, I would just make sure your not using a static public address, when its suppose to be dhcp? On your wireless routers internet port. If its not a public address - then your still double natting, and even though you might have gotten a forward to work -- its still not the optimal setup.
