Does Windows Vista Aero look like Mac OS X Aqua to you?

i hate mac fanboys.

im not a windows fanboy either...

why not say Ubuntu stole their design from osx too? i mean cmon. the menus are at the top :o

omg!

they dont look ANYTHING alike.

if you think they do. your either

1) a blind pink monkey

or 2) a mac fanboy.

Obviously they've seen it or they wouldn't be throwing around these accusations. You Windows fanboys just can't take the fact that developers share ideas. This is NOTHING to get offended by -- it is not UNHEARD of for developers to SHARE IDEAS. Get over it and MOVE ON.

are you kidding? have you heard of GOSSIP? hulllooo... most mac osx fanboys WONT GO NEAR A windows rig. use vista. then tell me that its the same.

Personal Attacks are NOT welcome.
Vista looks SOOOO much better.

Mac looks way ugly.

Look at how old Mac OS X is, now compare Mac OS X's visuals to the Windows operating system of its generation -- Mac OS X is one of the prettiest operating systems ever made, which is why no one ever kept the original Windows visual look and always tried to emulate it to look like Mac OS X as much as possible.

That was also a bad screenshot of Mac OS X. They didn't have it setup. Find one setup properly and it still looks as good as Vista.

1) Nothing obvious about it. That's part of jumping on a bandwagon - you don't need to have ant evidence, just run with whatever other people are saying.

3) Yes, developers share ideas, and a truly perfect OS would be an evolution of many different preceeding OS's converging to a point. But saying it was "copied" as many people blindly claim is false.

Look at it again. The texturing may not be anywhere the same, but the overall design of the window is indeed very similar. This is no surprise though -- just about every other feature in Vista was ripped from Mac OS X as well (there are differences, but you can tell where the general ideas came from). I don't know why you Windows fanboys get so offended by this though, it's not unheard of for two applications to share similar ideas.

It seems like all the Windows fanboys are just so easily offended by these accusations. Deal with it. Programs have been developed for years, and just about every possible idea has been used in some way, shape, or form -- now developers are having to share ideas.

Just take video games for example. Give me a call when you see a game that doesn't share ideas from another one -- I'll be waiting a long time, because there never has been, and never will be.

Whether people call it stealing or not, the simple fact is that MS has a right to use certain aspects of the UI from Apple. It was licensed that way a long time ago and was one of the reasons the whole "Look & Feel" lawsuit Apple file against MS was dropped.

No, they do not look alike.

On a side note for some of the above comments about Windows fanboys, anytime Microsoft uses an idea, Mac fanboys scream, "RIP OFF! COPIED! STOLEN!" Even Jobs jumps into this tirade of blind accusation. So much for sharing ideas

Windows Calendar:

Oh and the search?

osx-homedir.jpg

i'll give you the search, altough it has been custom for years now to put the search in the right upper corner (not only os x, look at browsers etc)

the calendar, i see two calendars yes, how many ways are there to show a calendar. I anything, the windows one looks easier to use because of the toolbar (note that i use the outlook calendar so i don't know). The outlook calendar has looked something like that for years

what about windows sidebar... a cheap ripoff of dashboard? what about that winkey+tab bs which shows your desktop in 3d... looks a lot like a ripoff of expose to me. Windows Calendar? thats iCal without a doubt. The new save interface... quite similar to OS X. the "Search" bar in the start menu? Isn't that spotlight?

I have both a PC and a MacBook Pro. I had Windows Vista installed. It was too slow, took up too much memory and was utterly useless in terms of *new/spectacular* features which warrant the purchase of the new operating system. If i really wanted to use all of these *new* features I would just use my mac (which I do use more than my pc). Vista was the biggest waste of $200.

There?s no comparison imo... Maybe a identicalness with the calendars but that?s all... as for the round edges I didn?t even notice that aqua had them... or vista... shows how much I pay attention to little pointless things.

The image didn't reveal all of iCal's buttons on the buttom of the window--new task and new appt. are all there.

Also forgetting the iLife suit? Windows Photo Gallery? DVD Maker?

It's just a regular thing to put the search in that position, as XerXis said. Microsoft doesn't really have that big of a choice here: they either put the search where users expect (and can be said to have "copied it") or put it somewhere completely different, where users will find it annoying and incositent.

OK Enough with the FanBoy personal attacks. The next person who calls someone else a FanBoy will not only get a warning but also a suspension from Neowin.

Keep debating the topic but don't result to personal attacks. If your point can't be made without attacking another member it shouldn't be posted.

Windows Sidebar and Dashboard were pretty much cheap rips of Konfabulator. Sure it didn't have some gradient transparent bar to place them in but all those WIDGETS were from Konfabulator.

No, I think it looks nothing like it. The design is very different, and the entire foundation of it with the glass effects isn't even there in OS X. Otherwise..

- Aero also doesn't use textured windows, but OS X frequently does either in the form of subtle stripes or brushed metal.

- The menu bars are attached to the desktop in OS X, but the windows in Aero.

- The window buttons aren't placed in the same way.

- The window titles aren't placed in the same way.

- The Task Bar and Dock are far from direct equivalents.

Actually, compared to many other operating systems, I think Aero and OS X are unusually different for both being reasonably modern operating systems. If you go below the surface and start comparing the Control Panel to OS X etc, you only start seeing even more differences.

Hm, and where did Konfabulator get the idea for widgets?

They got full permissions.

Nope.

At the time that Apple had the look and feel lawsuit against MS, Xerox was waiting on the side lines to see how the case turned out. If Apple had won that case then Xerox was all set to sue Apple over the look and feel argument. As it turns out, even if Apple had won the case, Xerox waited too long to file suit.

Man, I've started a riot here by accident. In case anyone thought this was just a joke I was playing, I've got the Wikipedia page where I found this ridiculous question: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Criticism_of_...s_with_Mac_OS_X

    • Honestly that feels even more useless than it did when Win11 was first released. In 2021, the uproar was somewhat justified, but only when comparing how good we've had it since Windows 7. Prior to that, a new Windows release would often require new, or very recent hardware. Windows XP wouldn't run (in any usable way) on hardware released when it's predecessor Win98 was released (let's ignore ME). It was time to shift the goal post, and the way Microsoft did that was actually ok. People have still had another FIVE YEARS of free software support with Windows 10, and those of us who want to have used these tools to bypass the limitations, all while understanding the impacts that may have. Most laptops don't last 5 years (sadly), so now the youngest unsupported hardware is 9 years old, and apparently has another year of support with Windows 10. That's good. Meanwhile, understanding the impacts and limitations, I have my 2013 laptop running Win11 perfectly fine. The thing that's failing on it is the hardware, the 2.5" SATA cable/chip is failing and corrupting the SSDs I put in. Thankfully it has a functional M.2 sata drive that works fine!
    • iPhone 18 Pro drop-test video and photos leak on the dark web following a data breach by Hamid Ganji iPhone 17 Pro - Image via Apple Apple is seemingly facing one of the biggest data breaches in its history, and just a few months before the official debut of the iPhone 18 Pro series, photos, a drop-test video, a supplier list, and key phone components have reportedly been leaked by hackers. Last week, we reported that Tata Electronics, an Apple supplier and iPhone producer in India, was hit by a data breach. As a result, it was reported that more than 200,000 trade secrets and confidential documents belonging to Apple and Tesla were stolen by the ransomware group World Leaks. According to Reuters, the group has now leaked supplier lists, component details, and photos of the upcoming iPhone 18 Pro models on the dark web. One of the materials leaked by the hackers is a drop-test video of the iPhone 18 Pro, which is due to launch this September. The phone is shown in a gray color and has the same familiar design we saw on last year's iPhone 17 Pro series. The device also appears to be quite durable, though it seems to be thicker than last year's model. One possible explanation is that Apple may be using a larger battery in the iPhone 18 Pro series. Moreover, Reuters says it has seen at least six documents mapping many components in the iPhone 18 Pro models to their respective suppliers, including details on chips on the main circuit board and on battery and camera components. The documents reportedly detail hundreds of parts that will be used in the iPhone 18 Pro models. A person familiar with the matter told the outlet that Apple classifies this data as sensitive and “is concerned about the documents being shared on the dark web as they relate to unreleased models.” Apple is reportedly investigating the issue but has yet to issue an official statement.
    • You do you, I've just said that it first appeared in "home" version before it will be available in "work" one. I use Edge only because it still supports MV2 uBO extension even on Android - I'll switch when they stop.
    • I imagine that was a review or something? My reviews mostly contain a lot of images and galleries, but these are all webp too, but yeah it all adds up on the page load. Would help if you were more helpful with your critique instead of bitching and moaning like a Karen 😂 Because then we might be able to fix it for you.
    • If Valve refused to let them make the case, I wonder if they've already partnered with someone else to do it? The fact that they didn't seek permission/licence before diving straight in is incredible though
