When i6comp won't open a particular data1.cab file

Question

Opening special CAB files...

When the well known i6comp.exe CAB extractor won't open a particular data1.cab file, what else will?

For instance go to this intel webpage and download the first download on the page (INF Update Utility INFINST.EXE) (it's only 1 mb) Extract it and you'll see the data1 and data2.cabs

My question is what program to use to open it to see/extract what's inside....?

I've currently tried all version of i*comp.exe and using the standard cmd for it

i6comp e data1.cab

..or any cmd all gives this error:

Could not open data1.hdr

or

Could not open data1.cab

..depeding on which version used

Ok.. did you copy the data1.hdr file into the dir where you have data1.cab??

C:\workcab>i6comp.exe e data1.cab

InstallShield 6.x Cabinet Util

Version 0.2 -] fOSSiL & Morlac - 2000 [-

corecomp.ini

ctor.dll

objectps.dll

iuser.dll

iscript.dll

iKernel.exe

infinstl.dll

intelinstall.dll

UpdateDriver.exe

license.txt

value.shl

isrt.dll

default.pal

_IsRes.dll

815.inf

I download the file you linked too http://downloadfinder.intel.com/scripts-df...ms〈=eng

And I had no problem extracting.. Yes if the do not have the data1.hdr file in the directory where you have data1.cab -- your going to get this error

C:\workcab>i6comp.exe e data1.cab

InstallShield 6.x Cabinet Util

Version 0.2 -] fOSSiL & Morlac - 2000 [-

Could not open data1.hdr

The file is there in the download you linked too..

Thank you very much BudMan for your detailed explanations I got it working!

edit,

Oh but ps,

How come when I use the L cmd i6comp.exe L data1.cab and it lists all the files inside, but when I use your i6comp.exe e data1.cab file it only extracts 9 of the files, but there are so many more in there I see when using the L to list - how do I get ALL files extracted completely please, thanks

BudMan,

PS again,

Okay the reason is the link I gave to you in my previous post example file yes I can extract everything OKay, but the problem I am having is with this other one from intel HERE ..Now this is the one that when using i6comp e -r data1.cab ..it starts extracting but stops at the ninth file and prompts "Could not open license.txt" ..here let me copy/paste in my dos box info:

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
C:\i6>i6comp e -r data1.cab
InstallShield 6.x Cabinet Util
Version 0.2 -] fOSSiL & Morlac - 2000 [-
corecomp.ini
ctor.dll
objectps.dll
iuser.dll
iscript.dll
iKernel.exe
infinstl.dll
intelinstall.dll
UpdateDriver.exe
license.txt
Could not open license.txt
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

..and so this is my problem - why it stops on the license text with that error and so never gets past that file, but I want to extract all the files. I've tried different switches and I see that using i6comp e -r -f data1.cab gets them all but in seperate folders and a pita.. and so back to i6comp e -r data1.cab - why is it stopping on the license.text? what to do to fix?

thanks again

I think the command your looking for is

iscomp.exe e -f data1.cab

This will put all the file in their own lang dir, etc.. And gets by the error your seeing about the lic.txt file

Seems the prob is that there are multiple copies of lic and _IsRes.dll and value.shl

Not sure what your not understanding about how data1.cab files can be put together? And how i6comp works?? What do you notice about the lic.txt file -- notice the R when you list the files? Read Only -- this is what I think is causing the problem -- once it extracts the first one, it does not want to over right it and no dir are setup for it..

The command -f will extract the files for you.. or just delete the lic.txt file with the d command then you can extract the right into the same dir, etc..

Hi BudMan,

Yes you're right and I realized that after I posted my message last night when I was trying more things and noticed there were many license.txt files and had read only properties, and so naturally knew they won't overwrite each other - which is a good thing and I don't want them too. I simply want to extract everything in the exact same file/folder structure that it is in the first place.

What throws me off with the i6comp e -r data1.cab line when used on my second download file, is that it appears it puts every file that wasn't in a folder now in it's own folder, so we have 80 folders when 'i don't think' that's how it is originally in there is it? If not, what I would like is to simply extract everything just like it's original file/folder structure was in the first place... iow, just like it would if it was a zip file extracts everything in the file/folder structure it originally was and doesn't create folders for files that were not in a folder in the first place.

If 'i6comp e -r data1.cab' is the closest I can come to that then so be it, however if there are really 80 folders in there? ..if yes then so be it.

Thank you very much BudMan, your help is greatly appreciated.

    • Microsoft is adding some very useful features to Word, Teams, Outlook, and more by Usama Jawad Image via Microsoft Microsoft 365 is the Redmond tech firm's premier solution for Office apps and cloud storage, among other things. Microsoft offers both consumer- and enterprise-oriented subscriptions for this solution, enabling customers to take full advantage of cloud-powered capabilities, in contrast to the LTSC versions of Office. Microsoft 365 apps and services regularly receive new updates and the good thing is that Microsoft tracks them in a very transparent way on its public roadmap. The Redmond company has updated its Microsoft 365 Roadmap with a lot of items in the past week or so, and there are several interesting features there that may excite its customers. For starters, Word is getting a very useful utility that will likely help people writing detailed documents using the software. Microsoft is integrating third-party citation providers in the Reference tab, so that users can quickly add citations. This is being made available to GCC, GCC High, and Department of Defense (DoD) customers on desktop and web this month. There are several improvements on the way for Copilot Notebooks too. Users can customize the format, style, and duration of Audio Overviews in the application through natural language prompts. These Audio Overviews can then be saved on OneDrive so that they can be shared with others too. All of these capabilities are landing on the web next month. Speaking of Copilot, Microsoft is moving the navigation pane for Copilot Chat from the right side of the app to the left. Apart from retaining the existing features, this repositioning allows Microsoft to add new capabilities such as an All Conversations tab, while also streamlining the overall navigation experience. This is being implemented for all customers using Outlook and Teams on the web from next month. In the latter software, Microsoft is also introducing regional settings that gives controls over the app's language and datetime formats. This is being made available for all Teams customers on Android, iOS, desktop, and the web from next month. Meanwhile, the desktop version of Teams is exclusively gaining the ability next month to search for meetings and participants in the search bar and take actions directly from there. Available actions include viewing recaps, accessing the dedicated meetings tab, and RSVP-ing. Microsoft added 39 items to the Microsoft 365 Roadmap, so you can understand that the selection of items described above is only scratching the tip of the iceberg. Check out other upcoming capabilities like Universal Print enhancements and more Copilot improvements on the dedicated webpage here.
